Cofield became a free agent after being outrighted off the White Sox 40-man roster last month. The Pirates also inked right-hander Jose Diaz and infielder Stefan Welch to minor league contracts. However, none of the three will receive invites to spring training. |

Cofield was selected in the eighth round of the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft and has compiled a 4.12 ERA and 1.49 WHIP over the past six minor league seasons. He has yet to reach the Triple-A level and won't be much more than a middle or long reliever once he does finally reach the big leagues. |

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the White Sox have acquired Kyle Cofield in a trade from the Braves. |
Sounds like a minor move designed to clear a spot on Atlanta's 40-man roster. Cofield, 24 in January, turned in a 4.39 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 55 1/3 innings this past season at the Double-A level and has not yet reached Triple-A ball. He projects as nothing more than a middle reliever. |
