Phillies released RHP Matt Anderson. |
The former No. 1 overall pick was a non-roster invitee to spring training but never had a real shot of making the team and was among the first cuts to minor league camp. It's not clear if he asked the Phils for his release to see if he could catch on elsewhere or if they simply decided it wasn't going to work out. Anderson hasn't pitched in a major league game since 2005 and is very unlikely to do so again. |

Phillies signed RHP Matt Anderson to a minor league contract. |
The 34-year-old was the top pick in the 1997 draft by the Tigers and later closed for Detroit. He has a career 4.89 ERA in the big leagues over 245 games, but hasn't pitched at that level since 2005. Anderson has next-to-no shot at ever being a factor again in the majors and will provide organization depth. |
