Fri May 4 201214:31Mat Gamel placed on DL
Brewers placed 1B Mat Gamel on the 15-day disabled list with a torn right ACL.
Gamel blew out his knee after slamming into the right-field retaining wall while trying to track down a foul pop-up in San Diego. Though the Brewers have yet to officially rule him out for the season, it's almost certainly a season-ending injury. Travis Ishikawa is expected to receive the bulk of the time at first base.

Wed May 2 201217:21Mat Gamel has torn ACL, out for rest of 2012
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said that Mat Gamel has a torn ACL in his right knee that will likely require season-ending surgery.
It's too bad, as Gamel was finally getting a chance to be an everyday player following Prince Fielder's departure. Though he was batting just .246/.293/.348 with one homer over his first 75 plate appearances, it's a notable blow to the Brewers, who have little depth at first base. They'll likely use Travis Ishikawa there for now, but we suspect that they'll look for help outside the organization.

Wed May 2 201215:55Gamel tells teammates he needs knee surgery
Mat Gamel has told teammates that he needs surgery on his right knee.
Terrible news for Gamel, who is hitting .246/.293/.348 with one homer, six RBI and a .641 OPS over 75 plate appearances this season. It's not clear how long he'll be sidelined, but Travis Ishikawa will step in on a temporary basis. Brooks Conrad is a candidate to be called up from the minors and there's a chance Corey Hart could also get a look.

Wed May 2 201213:27Gamel to have knee examined in Milwaukee
Mat Gamel will return to Milwaukee on Wednesday to have his right knee examined by Dr. William Raasch.
Gamel left Tuesday's game after slamming his right knee into the right-field retaining wall while trying to track down a foul pop-up in the first inning. No word yet on the severity, but that the Brewers are flying him all the way from San Diego suggests that there is some level of concern. Stay tuned.

Tue Apr 24 201216:41Gamel gets X-rays on shoulder, out Tuesday
Mat Gamel had X-rays Monday on his shoulder after a collision at home plate with Astros catcher Jason Castro.
They turned up negative, but Gamel is not in the Brewers' lineup on Tuesday night because of general soreness related to the play. Travis Ishikawa is starting at first base and batting eighth against Houston.

Sun Apr 22 201217:52Mat Gamel picks up RBI in loss
Mat Gamel went 1-for-4 with his fifth RBI in Sunday's loss to the Rockies.
Gamel has just four extra-base hits through his first 58 plate appearances, but is hitting a solid .278/.339/.407. Eligible at both first and third base, he should prove to be a mixed-league asset.

Tue Apr 17 201223:42Gamel homers in Brewers victory
Mat Gamel went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the Brewers 5-4 comeback win over the Dodgers on Tuesday.
Gamel's solo shot off of Chad Billingsley was his first of the season and got the scoring started in the second inning. He also managed to pick up his third stolen base of the season and score three times in the game, including the winning run in the ninth. While Gamel has failed to live up to his massive hype in year's past, he's off to a strong start and appears secure as the Brewers starting first baseman.

Tue Nov 15 201117:37Gamel likely to get shot at first base in '12
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Monday that he is leaning toward giving Mat Gamel a chance at first base if or when Prince Fielder signs elsewhere this winter.
Melvin hasn't closed the door on Fielder completely, but it sure sounds like he has already made up his mind. "My gut feeling now is to give (Mat) Gamel a chance (at 1B)," said Melvin. Gamel, 26, batted .310/.372/.540 with 28 homers, 96 RBI and a .912 OPS over 545 plate appearances with Triple-A Nashville this season in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. The Brewers will likely give him a chance to sink or swim in 2012, but look for them to secure a right-handed hitter platoon partner this winter.

Sun Oct 23 201109:09Mat Gamel could get a shot at 1B job
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said the team may consider giving the first base job to Mat Gamel if Prince Fielder leaves as a free agent.
"Is this the time to give Mat Gamel a chance? That's something we have to seriously consider," said Melvin. Gamel batted .310 with 28 homers, 96 RBI and a .912 OPS for Triple-A Nashville this season. He hasn't fared well in his previous chances at the big league level, but he's also never been given an extended look. The 26-year-old would represent a cheap option at first base if the Brew Crew decide to spend money on upgrading the left side of their infield.

Tue Jun 28 201116:02Gamel to DH Tuesday vs. Yanks
Mat Gamel will serve as the designated hitter Tuesday night against the Yankees.
He was called up from the minors Monday for that very reason. While he'll mostly DH this week in New York and Minnesota, it's also possible he could play first so that Prince Fielder can DH a game or two. Gamel's value will likely be fleeting, but he's worth a look in NL-only leagues.

Mon Jun 27 201117:40Brewers recall Mat Gamel from Triple-A
Brewers recalled INF Mat Gamel from Triple-A Nashville.
As expected. Gamel was batting .321/.380/.577 with 18 home runs and 58 RBI over his first 76 games with the Sounds, including a .347 batting average over 101 at-bats this month. The 25-year-old has flopped in a small sample in the major leagues, but he'll get a chance to DH over the next six games as the Brewers play in American League ballparks. He's worth a short-term add in NL-only leagues.

Sun Jun 26 201108:44Brewers could call Mat Gamel up
The Brewers are once again considering calling Mat Gamel up.
They talked about calling him up before their interleague series in Boston but decided against it since they came back home after just three games with the DH. But, with six straight games in AL parks in the upcoming week, it's much likelier he'll be summoned now, Gamel was batting .319 with 16 home runs and 52 RBI going into Saturday's game for Triple-A Nashville.

Tue Jun 14 201119:41Mat Gamel won't be promoted
Brewers assistant GM Gord Ash said Mat Gamel is unlikely to be promoted for interleague play.
The Brewers had been kicking around the idea of possibly starting him at first base in order to give Prince Fielder some time off his feet. But, they'll let Gamel continue to play every day at Triple-A Nashville. He's batting .310/.377/.548 with 13 homers there this season.

Sun Jun 12 201113:01Mat Gamel could be recalled this week
The Brewers are considering promoting Mat Gamel this week to serve as an extra bat during their interleague series against the Red Sox.
The Brewers would like to give Prince Fielder a "day off" by putting him in the DH spot, which would allow Gamel to handle first base. Gamel has homered in two straight games for Triple-A Nashville and is batting .303 with 11 home runs and 39 RBI on the year. "We talked about it a week ago, and we talked about it about 10 minutes ago," manager Ron Roenicke said. "So, yes, we've talked about it. He's playing really well at first base, defensively. And offensively, he's done a nice job. He's been a little inconsistent, but he can swing. You guys have seen him."

Wed May 18 201108:56Brewers choose RH bat over Mat Gamel
The Brewers chose to recall Mike Rivera instead of Mat Gamel because they preferred to have a right-handed hitter on the bench.
Gamel is batting .303/.389/.486 with five homers and 21 RBI at Triple-A Nashville, but it wasn't enough to get the call over a third catcher/right-handed pinch-hitter. The former top prospect's stock has fallen considerably.

Tue Mar 22 201116:58Brewers option Gamel to Triple-A
Brewers optioned INF-OF Mat Gamel to Triple-A Nashville.
Gamel was in the mix for a roster spot entering spring training, but those chances were essentially dashed when he suffered a rib-cage strain early in camp. He went 3-for-8 over just five Cactus League games.

Tue Mar 15 201120:02Gamel (oblique) makes spring debut Tuesday
Mat Gamel (oblique) went 1-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout as the designated hitter in his spring debut Tuesday against the Indians.
Gamel had been sidelined since the beginning of camp due to a strained oblique. He should get some looks in the field over the next couple of days.

Mon Mar 7 201113:21Gamel takes swings, oblique doing better
Mat Gamel took swings off a tee Monday and reported no problems with his strained oblique.
Oblique strains often take a while to heal, as Gamel is finding out this spring. The infield prospect still isn't doing aggressive drills, but he is slowly and surely working his way back to full health. The Brewers have not issued an official timetable for his recovery.
