Tue Apr 2317:45Cubs Designate Garrett Cooper For AssignmentGarrett Cooper1BBrewersFree Agent
The Chicago Cubs designated outfielder Garrett Cooper for assignment on Tuesday, according to a source. Cooper wasn't exactly slumping at the plate, but the Cubs think he's expendable in order to bring up first base prospect Matt Mervis as another right-handed bat. The 33-year-old Cooper was hitting .270/.341/.432 with a home run, double, triple, six RBI and three runs scored in 41 trips to the plate and 12 games for the Cubs before getting DFA'd. He had walked four times and struck out 13 times. For now, Mervis is likely to see most of his time as the team's designated hitter, at least until outfielder Seiya Suzuki (oblique) is able to return from the injured list. Mervis is worth a pickup in NL-only leagues for now.

Tue Apr 2317:22Kyle Hendricks, Drew Smyly Placed On Injured ListDrew SmylySPRaysFree Agent
Kyle HendricksSPCubsFree Agent
The Chicago Cubs placed pitchers Kyle Hendricks (back) and Drew Smyly (hip) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday and recalled infielder Matt Mervis, right-hander Hayden Wesneski and left-hander Luke Little from Triple-A Iowa in corresponding moves. The 34-year-old Hendricks has been downright bad so far in 2024, posting a 12.00 ERA in his first five starts, but hopefully his back injury was mostly to blame. If left-hander Justin Steele (hamstring) is able to return from his IL stint before Hendricks does, which is likely, Hendricks could find himself out of a rotation spot when he's ready to return. With Hendricks out, Wesneski is a candidate to fill his rotation spot until Steele is able to return. Little will give the Cubs another left-handed arm out of the bullpen to replace Smyly.

Tue Apr 2316:34Gerrit Cole Out To 120 FeetGerrit ColeSPPiratesFree Agent
New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (elbow) got out to 120 feet on flat ground in his throwing program on Tuesday, which is typically as far out as pitchers will go before getting on the mound as they rehab. With that said, Cole isn't sure when he will advance to throwing off a mound. He will take the day off on Wednesday and go from there as he ramps up his throwing progression. If the 33-year-old reigning American League Cy Young winner feels good later this week, manager Aaron Boone said he could star throwing off a mound next week. Fantasy managers in all formats need to keep Cole stashed in an injured-list spot as he attempts to come back from nerve irritation in his right elbow, but he still has a ways to go.

Tue Apr 2316:15Jonah Heim Back From Bereavement ListJonah HeimCOriolesFree Agent
The Texas Rangers activated catcher Jonah Heim from the bereavement list on Tuesday and optioned catcher Sam Huff to Triple-A Round Rock after Sunday's game in a corresponding move. Heim will be back behind the dish to catch right-hander Dane Dunning on Tuesday while hitting eighth in the batting order against the visiting Seattle Mariners and right-hander Logan Gilbert. The left-handed-hitting backstop has a .300 average with a home run and four RBI in 20 career at-bats against Gilbert, so fantasy managers will surely want to get him back into their starting lineups right away. Heim has been decent at the plate to start the year, too, going 19-for-72 (.264) with three home runs, 15 RBI, one stolen base and seven runs scored in 18 games played.

Tue Apr 2314:34Marcus Stroman Starting Against OaklandMarcus StromanRP/SPBlue JaysFree Agent
The New York Yankees will be starting right-hander Marcus Stroman on Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics. Stroman is coming off going 5.1 innings allowing two runs on six hits against the Toronto Blue Jays. Stroman is 1-1 with a 2.42 ERA this season, while at home is 0-1 with a 3.27 ERA. The right-hander is going up against an Athletics lineup that is slashing .204/.278/.339 which ranks 28th, 29th, and 26th in the majors.

Tue Apr 2314:11Kevin Gausman Looks To Build Off Last Start Against RoyalsKevin GausmanSPOriolesFree Agent
Right-hander Kevin Gausman will be starting for the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday in the second game of their four-game series against the Kansas City Royals. Gausman struggled to begin the year with his velocity, but in his last start against the Yankees, the right-hander had success, as he went five innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out six. Gausman is 0-2 with an 8.16 ERA this season and will face a Royals lineup that is slashing .237/.306/.405.

Tue Apr 2313:00Eugenio Suarez Brings In Two Runs MondayEugenio SuárezSSRedsFree Agent
Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez's plate vision was displayed in Monday's 5-3 loss against the St. Luis Cardinals. Suarez went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run, finally connecting at the plate after going hitless in back-to-back games over the weekend against the Giants. He is 21-for-85 (.247) with five doubles, two homers, 16 RBI, 16 runs, eight walks and 24 strikeouts through 23 games. The season has had ups and downs for the third baseman and with his recent slump, the matchup against St. Luis favors him. With the favorable matchups for this week, Suarez is a strong stash option with upside across all formats.

Tue Apr 2312:38Alex Cobb Won't Return Until Late MayAlex CobbSPRaysFree Agent
San Francisco Giants right-hander Alex Cobb (hip, shoulder) was moved to the 60-day injured list on April 20, so he won't be eligible to return until May 27. Cobb was progressing well in his rehab from offseason hip surgery, but he hit another minor setback when he felt mild shoulder irritation before throwing a bullpen session on April 16. He "felt OK" when he resumed throwing but saw team orthopedist Dr. Ken Akizuki as a precaution on April 18, according to manager Bob Melvin. Cobb said the imaging on his shoulder came back clean, and he's currently throwing out to 75 feet on flat ground. The 36-year-old also had a "baby setback" when he was briefly shut down with a mild flexor strain in his right elbow. Cobb should have a rotation spot waiting for him when he's healthy, but he can stay on the waiver wire for now in most mixed leagues.

Tue Apr 2312:23Matt Carpenter Receives InjectionMatt Carpenter3BCardinalsFree Agent
St. Louis Cardinals designated hitter Matt Carpenter (oblique) received a platelet-rich injection on Monday for his strained right oblique, according to manager Oliver Marmol. The plan is for Carpenter to have three days of no activity followed by hitting coach thrown batting practice and then machine work before they look at getting him live at-bats. The 38-year-old veteran had three hits in 10 at-bats over three games at the beginning of the season before getting hurt and landing on the injured list. When healthy, Carpenter will strictly be a bench bat and a DH option for the Cards when they are facing right-handed pitching. In 76 games with the San Diego Padres in 2023, he slashed a miserable .176/.322/.319 with five home runs and 31 RBI.

Tue Apr 2300:52Raisel Iglesias Locks Down Seventh Save MondayRaisel IglesiasSPRedsFree Agent
Atlanta Braves closer Raisel Iglesias converted his seventh save of the season in Monday's 3-0 win over the Marlins. Iglesias came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by three and delivered a 1-2-3 outing with a strikeout. The 34-year-old veteran has converted all of his save opportunities with a 2.16 ERA, a 6.48 K/9 rate, and a 1.08 BB/9 rate. The strikeouts have been down, but Iglesias should continue to be a higher-end fantasy option serving as the closer on one of baseball's best teams.

Tue Apr 2300:49Travis d'Arnaud Homers Again In Monday's WinTravis d'ArnaudCMetsFree Agent
Atlanta Braves catcher Travis d'Arnaud continued his power surge in Monday's 3-0 win over the Marlins. d'Arnaud went 2-for-4 with a single, a two-run home run, and a strikeout. The 35-year-old veteran has hit five HR in his last four games, bringing his season numbers to a .273/.344/.636 slash line with 14 RBI in 61 plate appearances. d'Arnaud should be a viable fantasy option in at least two-catcher leagues as long as he continues to hit while Sean Murphy (oblique) is on the injured list with an oblique injury.

Mon Apr 2223:49Merrill Kelly "Most Likely" Headed To The Injured ListMerrill KellyRPRaysFree Agent
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that right-hander Merrill Kelly (shoulder) is "most likely" headed to the injured list to make room for the call-up of left-hander Tommy Henry, who will start on Tuesday on the road against the St. Louis Cardinals. Kelly was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants and is now most likely going to have to miss the next couple weeks at the very least due to a shoulder strain. The 35-year-old veteran should be stashed in most fantasy leagues while he's on the injured list, as he's currently 2-0 with a strong 2.19 ERA (3.82 FIP) and 0.93 WHIP with six walks and 21 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings over his first four starts. Henry should fill in in Arizona's rotation in the short-term, but the soft-tossing southpaw has minimal fantasy upside and was sporting a 6.87 ERA and 1.80 WHIP in his first four starts before being optioned to the minors.

Mon Apr 2222:04No Timeline For Jordan Lyles' ReturnJordan LylesSPRockiesFree Agent
The Kansas City Royals placed right-hander Jordan Lyles (personal) on the inactive list on Saturday, and the team is not disclosing the reason for his absence other than describing it as a "personal matter." There's no timeline for his return, but because of the type of inactive list Lyles was placed on, it opened a 40-man roster spot for the Royals to call up veteran right-handed reliever Tyler Duffey. Lyles has thrown five scoreless innings with three strikeouts in five appearances out of KC's bullpen during the 2024 regular season, but he hasn't pitched since April 12. With no defined role and most of his work coming in mop-up duty this year, however, the 33-year-old journeyman belongs on fantasy waiver wires while he's unavailable. There's no clear-cut fantasy beneficiary of his absence, either.

Mon Apr 2221:55Joey Votto Hasn't Resumed HittingJoey Votto1BRedsFree Agent
Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Joey Votto (ankle) has started running more, but he's not hitting live pitching yet. There's no immediate plan for him to get into minor-league games, so until Votto resumes hitting, there's also no reason for fantasy managers to consider stashing the veteran on-base machine. After slashing .202/.314/.433 with 14 home runs and 38 RBI over 242 plate appearances (65 games) with the Cincinnati Reds a year ago, the 40-year-old former All-Star will be an option to serve as Toronto's designated hitter versus right-handed pitching when he's ultimately able to return from an ankle sprain and make his 2024 regular-season debut. Righty-mashing veteran Daniel Vogelbach will draw the occasional start as the DH, but he's only appeared in eight games for the Jays so far and isn't receiving enough at-bats to garner any fantasy interest right now.

Mon Apr 2221:49Mets Hope To Activate J.D. Martinez FridayJ.D. MartinezLF/RFTigersFree Agent
New York Mets designated hitter J.D. Martinez (back) will move his rehab to Triple-A Syracuse this week, and "it's possible" the team could activate him when they get home on Friday for the start of a three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals, per manager Carlos Mendoza. After receiving a cortisone shot due to lower back tightness, Martinez returned to a minor-league rehab assignment on Sunday and is on track to make his 2024 regular-season debut in Queens in Week 4 of fantasy baseball. With the Mets struggling to find consistency in the heart of their batting order, the 36-year-old All-Star slugger figures to slot right in as the No. 5 hitter in the lineup immediately upon his move to New York's active roster. After slashing .271/.321/.572 with 33 home runs, 27 doubles, and 103 RBI across 432 at-bats (113 games) with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, Martinez should be rostered for those in need of power numbers.

Mon Apr 2218:52Manny Machado Placed On Paternity ListManny Machado3BOriolesFree Agent
San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado has been placed on the paternity list on Monday. The superstar infielder will be away from the team for one to three days due to personal matters. In a corresponding move, infielder Matthew Batten has been recalled from Triple-A El Paso. Batten will take over the active spot on the roster and figures to play in a few games until Machado returns. Eguy Rosario is starting at third base and is hitting seventh on Monday against the Colorado Rockies and left-hander Austin Gomber.

Mon Apr 2218:30Carlos Rodon Allows One Hit In No-DecisionCarlos RodónSPWhite SoxFree Agent
New York Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon was tough to hit during Monday's game against the Oakland Athletics. The left-hander threw seven scoreless innings while allowing only one hit in what ended up being a no-decision. Sadly for Rodon, the Yankees offense didn't do much during this game. The Yankees ended up giving up two runs in the ninth inning and lost 2-0. Rodon is posting a solid 2.70 ERA, even though his 22/13 K/BB ratio isn't pretty. Fantasy managers will take this strong outing, but don't expect it every start from Rodon.

Mon Apr 2217:19Wade Miley Put On 15-Day Injured ListWade MileySPRed SoxFree Agent
The Milwaukee Brewers placed left-hander Wade Miley (elbow) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 19) with left-elbow inflammation on Monday. In other moves, the team recalled right-hander Tobias Myers from Triple-A Nashville, reinstated first baseman Jake Bauers from the bereavement list, and optioned infielder Andruw Monasterio to Nashville. The 37-year-old Miley started the 2024 season on the injured list with a left-shoulder injury and he also missed time in 2023 with elbow and lat ailments. Miley is set to undergo tests on Tuesday and could be out for an extended amount of time. Myers is the most logical choice to fill in for Miley on Tuesday and start against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Miley already wasn't really an attractive option for fantasy managers in deep-mixed leagues before the injury.

Mon Apr 2217:15Ozzie Albies Starts Hitting, Could Return FridayOzzie AlbiesSSBravesFree Agent
Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies (toe) started hitting on Monday and could still return from the injured list on Friday when he's eligible to come off the 10-day injured list. Albies has progress quickly from his fractured big toe, which has to music to his fantasy managers' ears. The 27-year-old shouldn't be available on the waiver wire in any fantasy leagues despite his injury, which came when he was hit by a pitch last week. With Albies out, Luis Guillorme and David Fletcher have both seen playing time at the keystone in Atlanta. The switch-hitting Albies had gone 20-for-63 (.317) with two home runs, 14 RBI and two stolen bases at the time of his injury, so hopefully he can pick up where he left off when he's back. Albies is a must-start on the daily when he's in Atlanta's lineup.

Mon Apr 2216:56Aaron Judge Continues To StruggleAaron JudgeRFYankeesFree Agent
New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Monday's 2-0 loss to the Oakland A's. The season hasn't been kind to him, as he is averaging .167 (15-for-90) with five doubles, three homers, 15 runs, 11 RBI, 17 walks, and 31 strikeouts over 23 games. Judge should be able to find some hits within the series against the A's as the matchups favor him and the Yankees. Even with the struggles, Judge is a must-start in all league formats, providing power when he connects.
