ST. LOUIS (AP) — Hundreds of people have gathered to say goodbye to Red Schoendienst. Among them are current and past St. Louis Cardinals players as well as fans.The Hall of Fame second baseman's public funeral was Friday at the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis. He died last week at 95.Current Cardinals Matt Carpenter, Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright were among those on hand as were former Cardinals Ted Simmons and Bruce Sutter.Schoendienst spent most of his playing career in St. Louis and managed the team to the 1967 World Series championship and the 1968 National League pennant. All told, he spent more than 60 seasons in a Cardinals uniform as a player, coach and manager.

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles have placed left-hander Richard Bleier on the 10-day disabled list with a shoulder injury, a huge setback for the team with the worst record in the major leagues.Bleier was the most effective reliever in a bullpen that only recently got back injured Zach Britton and Darren O'Day. Bleier is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 31 games, the most appearances on the staff.Bleier hurt his arm Wednesday, walking off the mound in pain after a seventh-inning pitch against Boston.An MRI determined the injury to be a left shoulder latissimus strain.In addition to putting Bleier on the DL on Friday, the Orioles recalled left-handed reliever Tanner Scott from Triple-A Norfolk; selected the contract of infielder Corban Joseph from Double-A Bowie; optioned right-hander Yefry Ramirez to Norfolk; and designated lefty D.J. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang has been reinstated from the restricted list and optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis after missing last season and the first part of this year because of visa issues.The 31-year-old Kang was unable to secure a work visa to travel from his native South Korea to the United States after he was arrested for DUI for a third time in December 2016 in Seoul. He received an eight-month suspended prison sentence.Friday's move is primarily procedural, since Kang already has played in 11 minor league games. He was cleared to travel to the U.S. on April 27.Kang went 1 for 15 in his first four games for Indianapolis after batting .417 (10 for 24) in seven games for high Class A Bradenton.Kang finished third in the 2015 NL Rookie of the Year voting after becoming the first native South Korean position player to make the jump from the Korea Baseball Organization to the major leagues. He hit .287 with 15 homers in 126 games that season, and then .255 with 21 homers in 103 games in 2016.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers and catcher Robinson Chirinos of the Texas Rangers have been ejected in the third inning after a home plate collision that led to a benches-clearing confrontation between the teams.With two outs, Enrique Hernandez singled to right and Kemp tried score from second Wednesday night. Chirinos caught a pinpoint throw by Nomar Mazara and had his glove out to tag Kemp. Kemp barreled into Chirinos with his arms up, leading with his shoulder. Chirinos' helmet flew off as he got knocked over and Kemp fell, too.Chirinos and Kemp jostled as they got up. That led to both benches and bullpens clearing and forming a scrum at the plate. Kemp was restrained by Rangers starter Cole Hamels.No punches were thrown. The umpires convened during the half inning and ejected both Kemp and Chirinos.Rules have been put in place to outlaw runners from plowing into catchers, and catchers have to give runners a lane to the plate in most cases.
