Tue Mar 13 201816:12Orioles' Joseph goes from being punchline to No. 1 catcher
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Caleb Joseph has gone from being a punchline in 2016 to being the Baltimore Orioles No. 1 catcher — at least for now.Joseph went through the entire season in 2016 — during which he had 132 at-bats — without a single RBI.He rebounded last season, driving in 28 runs, and has swung a hot bat this spring.Entering Tuesday's game at Minnesota, Joseph was batting a cool .444 (8-for-18) with a home run and 5 RBIs, and at least for now, Joseph is the Orioles' starting catcher."It's spring training. That sums it up," Joseph said. "There's been springs when you didn't get any hits. There's been springs where you've gotten a ton of hits. I wish it mattered."The 31-year-old catcher endured years of minor league ball — including five seasons at Double-A Bowie, where he set an unwanted franchise record for most games played.Joseph finally made it to the big leagues in 2014, and after sitting behind Matt Wieters and Welington Castillo, he's inherited — or earned — Baltimore's catching... SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles began spring training on Wednesday with 35 pitchers and much uncertainty. Since last season ended, Baltimore shed four of its starters from the 2017 rotation: right-handers Jeremy Hellickson, Ubaldo Jimenez and Chris Tillman and left-hander Wade Miley.Who'll replace them and slot in behind right-handers Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman in 2018 is a mystery.Manager Buck Showalter said that eight pitchers could work in Grapefruit League games as starters. They include Bundy, Gausman, right-handers Miguel Castro, Hunter Harvey, Mike Wright and Gabriel Ynoa. Two Rule 5 draftees left-hander Nestor Cortes and right-hander Jose Mesa are also under consideration.Harvey, who was Baltimore's top draft pick in 2013, but had Tommy John surgery in 2016, won't start the season in the major leagues, though he could pitch for the Orioles later in the season.Castro was impressive in long relief last year and got a start on the next-to-last day of the 2017 season.Wright,... RHP Gabriel Ynoa lasted just three innings Wednesday at Pittsburgh, allowing four runs and five hits -- including two homers -- with three strikeouts and one walk. He had allowed more than three runs in only one of his eight previous appearances (three starts) this season. "A little flat. Not much Christmas to his stuff," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "He was a little flat with everything. Breaking ball was a little sloppy."
Fri Sep 22 201716:48MLB roundup: Cubs defeat Brewers in 10 innings
MILWAUKEE -- Kris Bryant's two-run homer in the 10th inning led Chicago past Milwaukee 5-3 on Thursday night at Miller Park, boosting the Cubs' lead over the Brewers to 4 1/2 games in the National League Central.Javier Baez tied the game for Chicago with a ninth-inning single, and the Brewers squandered a bases-loaded, one-out opportunity in the bottom of the ninth. The late collapse spoiled an outstanding effort from Zach Davies, who held the Cubs to two runs on seven hits and two walks (one intentional) in seven innings.Chicago's Jake Arrieta worked five innings in his first start since Sept. 4. He missed his previous two turns in the rotation because of a strained hamstring but was cleared earlier this week. He held Milwaukee to a run -- a solo homer by Domingo Santana -- on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts.Kyle Schwarber gave Chicago an early lead, taking Davies deep to left with one out in the second for his 29th home run of the season. RHP Gabriel Ynoa made a strong case for being part of the 2017 rotation on Thursday. Ynoa, who was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Sept. 3, gave up one run and five hits with three strikeouts and two walks Thursday against the Rays. "He did his part and he'll get the ball again," manager Buck Showalter said. "See if it continues against another team."

RHP Gabriel Ynoa allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits in 4 1/3 innings Friday. In his second start of the season, Ynoa lasted 64 pitches while doing enough to satisfy manager Buck Showalter. "Slider was there for him," Showalter said. "Some command of fastball was a challenge for him but gave us a chance and it was a good experience for him."

RHP Gabriel Ynoa started 21 games at Triple-A Norfolk this year, but he hadn't started a major league game since Oct. 2 of last year, while pitching for the Mets. On Saturday, Ynoa made his first major league start this season. In 4 2/3 innings he gave up three runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts and no walks. He took the loss in the Orioles? 4-2 loss to Cleveland. "Obviously he's facing a good offensive team, but I thought he presented himself well," Manager Buck Showalter said. "I looked at this as an opportunity, and I wanted to take advantage of it," Ynoa said. "I tried to go five innings and give our team a chance to win."

Ynoa continued his hot streak Monday, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts in seven innings.
Ynoa's ERA is 1.56 over his last six starts. Monday was his fourth consecutive start where he threw at least seven innings while also not allowing a base on balls. If Ynoa can keep up this fine pitching, a promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas could come shortly.

Ynoa tossed a complete-game shutout Thursday, allowing just one hit, with no walks and six strikeouts.
Ynoa, after a slow start to the season, has really turned it on lately. In his last four starts, spanning 30.2 innings, he's allowed just four earned runs with a 13:2 K:BB ratio. Ynoa is not a strikeout pitcher, evidenced in his 42:20 K:BB ratio, relying on command and control to retire hitters.
Tue Mar 17 201513:44Ynoa reassigned to minor league camp Tuesday
Ynoa was reassigned to minor league camp Tuesday, ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports.
Look for Ynoa to begin the season at Double-A, with promotion to Triple-A at some point this summer. He may still profile as more of a reliever than a starter, especially in the Mets' organization.
