Thu Jun 2 202216:34Jorge Mateo Out Of The Lineup On Thursday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo is not in the starting lineup for Thursday's game against right-hander Chris Flexen and the Seattle Mariners. Chris Owings will be getting the start at shortstop and batting ninth in the game. Mateo closed out May on a five-game hitting streak that included two doubles, a triple and a home run. The 26-year-old has been a fantastic source of stolen bases this year with 13 on 14 attempts. He's hitting just .220/.251/.354 on the year, so it's no surprise that he's been mostly batting ninth for the Orioles. If he could increase his batting average and add just a little more power (three home runs on the year), he could be a fantasy gem. For now, he remains a stolen base specialist who is a strong starting option in most rotisserie and head-to-head categories leagues.

Tue May 17 202216:39Jorge Mateo Could Return On Wednesday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo (shoulder) is being held out of the starting lineup for the second straight game on Tuesday. Ramon Urias will be making his second consecutive start at shortstop in the game. Prior to Tuesday's game, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde stated that he's hopeful Mateo can be available off the bench for the contest and that he hopes Mateo will be back in the starting lineup on Wednesday. The 26-year-old has been a great source of stolen bases this year. Over 33 games, he's slashed .241/.280/.375 with two home runs, 10 stolen bases and 12 runs.

Mon May 16 202217:51Jorge Mateo Still Dealing With Soreness
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo (shoulder) is still experiencing left shoulder soreness, according to manager Brandon Hyde. Mateo injured his shoulder during Sunday's game after colliding with Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson on the way to first base. Hyde is optimistic that Mateo will be back soon, suggesting there's even a chance he could be used off the bench in Monday's game against the New York Yankees. Meanwhile, Ramon Urias will be starting at shortstop for Monday's game.

Mon May 16 202209:23Jorge Mateo Diagnosed With Left Shoulder Contusion
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo (shoulder) was removed from Sunday's game against the Detroit Tigers. He was involved in a collision with Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson in the game. Mateo was attempting to run out a bunt when the two players collided. After the game, Mateo underwent X-rays and they came back negative. He has been diagnosed with a left shoulder/chest contusion. It sounds as if Mateo avoided something serious on Sunday. He should be considered day-to-day until we hear more from the team. The 26-year-old has been a nice fantasy asset this year, stealing 10 bases on 11 attempts while slashing .241/.280/.375.

Sun Apr 24 202208:54Jorge Mateo Leads The Majors With Six Steals
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Jorge Mateo is slashing .229/.288/.271 with no home runs, three RBI, three runs scored, and league-leading six stolen bases over 14 games in 2022. He continues to be a threat on the base paths and has swiped three bags in back-to-back contests. However, the 26-year-old hasn't shown patience at the plate and hasn't drawn a walk over his last 36 plate appearances. Mateo might not have much fantasy value in points leagues, but his ability to rack up stolen bases gives him plenty of value in standard 5x5 formats. As long as Mateo is a fixture in Baltimore's everyday lineup, he has the upside to swipe 30 or more bags in 2022.

Wed Apr 6 202214:12Jorge Mateo Takes Batting Practice Wednesday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo (hand) took batting practice on Wednesday and should be fine for Opening Day on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Mateo left the Grapefruit League game early on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays when he was hit on the right hand by a pitch. But the 26-year-old avoided structural damage and could open the season as the team's starting shortstop after he went 8-for-21 with six extra-base hits, two walks and a stolen base in spring training. Mateo had a nice showing in his first season with the O's last year, slashing .280/.328/.421 with two homers, eight RBI and five stolen bases in 116 plate appearances over 32 games. If he's given the regular shortstop gig, he could be attractive in AL-only leagues for his speed.

Sat Sep 4 202100:51Jorge Mateo Hits Fourth Home Run Of season Friday
Baltimore Orioles middle infielder/outfielder Jorge Mateo went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk, and a strikeout in Friday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Yankees. The seventh-inning homer tied the game and was Mateo's fourth of the season. The 26-year-old now has a .262/.307/.411slash line on the season and has done very well since joining the O's in the beginning of August. His recent display of average, speed, and some pop makes him an interesting option in deeper roto leagues at this time.

Mon Aug 30 202109:49Jorge Mateo Hits First Homer As Oriole Sunday
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Jorge Mateo stayed red-hot in Sunday's 12-8 loss to the Rays, going 1-for-5 with a two-run home run. The sixth-inning shot was Mateo's third of the season but first with the Orioles, who he joined in the beginning of August. Mateo has been highly effective since joining the O's, slashing .353/.380/.515 with five RBI and four stolen bases. His elite speed helps in the steals department and getting extra-base-hits, making him an interesting option in deeper leagues down the stretch if he can continue to hit for average.

Sat Aug 21 202112:26Jorge Mateo Extends Hit Streak To 11 Games Friday
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Jorge Mateo picked up another hit in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Braves, going 1-for-3 with a single and two strikeouts. The 26-year-old now has an 11-game hit streak going and has just one game without a hit since joining the O's on August 6. The new scenery seems to be suiting Mateo, as he is slashing .340/.352/.491 with three stolen bases since joining the O's. It is clear that the O's do not provide much fantasy value overall, but Mateo may be worth a look in deep roto leagues if he can continue to hit with his speed.

Fri Aug 6 202116:40Jorge Mateo Claimed By Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles claimed utilityman Jorge Mateo off waivers Thursday from the San Diego Padres. Infielder Pat Valaika was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Mateo had played sparingly in two seasons with the Padres, recording a .195/.235/.310 slash with two homers and six steals in 121 plate appearances. Fangraphs lists the 26-year-old speedster as the primary backup infielder for the Orioles, so he'll conceivably get more opportunities to earn his big league credentials. A former top prospect for the Oakland Athletics, Mateo has lacked plate discipline with a 31 percent strikeout rate compared to walking at a three percent clip. Despite the game-changing speed, Mateo is a tough sell as a dynasty fantasy option until he gets on base more consistently.

Tue Aug 3 202118:47Jorge Mateo Designated For Assignment
The San Diego Padres designated utilityman Jorge Mateo for assignment Tuesday. The move makes way for reliever Matt Strahm's (knee) activation from the 60-day IL. Mateo had played sparingly with the Friars, tallying a .572 OPS with two homers and five steals in 93 plate appearances. Once a highly touted prospect for the Oakland A's with blazing speed, the 26-year-old will be outrighted to Triple-A El Paso unless he's claimed. With a career 31 percent strikeout rate, Mateo's inability to reach base diminishes him as a weapon on the basepaths. He shouldn't be a highly regarded fantasy piece in dynasty.

Sat May 22 202102:02Strasburg yields 1 hit in 5 1/3 innings in return for Nats
WASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg pitched into the sixth inning in his return from the injured list, allowing just one hit as the Washington Nationals defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 on Friday night. Strasburg (1-1) started for the first time since April 13. He had been sidelined with right shoulder inflammation. He picked up his first win in a regular-season game since Sept. 26, 2019. Strasburg allowed only Anthony Santander’s leadoff single in the second. He walked four and struck out four in 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Washington scored two runs against Jorge López (1-5) in the fifth. López allowed four straight hits, including back-to-back doubles by Josh Bell (3 hits) and Kyle Schwarber and a run-scoring single by Josh Harrison. Freddy Galvis hit a two-run home run with two outs in the ninth against Brad Hand. Trey Mancini had two hits for the Orioles, who have lost 11 of 13 since John Means threw a no-hitter on May 5. Wed May 19 202115:48Tatis, Hosmer clear COVID-19 protocols, return to Padres
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and first baseman Eric Hosmer of the San Diego Padres were activated from the injured list after passing COVID-19 protocols prior to Wednesday's game against the Colorado Rockies. Tatis tested positive prior to a game at Colorado on May 11 and Hosmer was pulled from that game due to contract tracing protocols. Right fielder Wil Myers also was pulled from that game after a positive test came back. Manager Jayce Tingler said he hopes Myers will be back this weekend. Jurickson Profar and Jorge Mateo were also placed into contact tracing that night. They were activated on Monday. The Padres went 7-1 without Tatis, Hosmer and Myers, including a weekend sweep of the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals. To make room for Tatis and Hosmer, the Padres optioned INF/OF Tucupita Marcano to Triple-A El Paso, and returned OF John Andreoli to El Paso. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Wed May 19 202104:18LEADING OFF: Ohtani pitches, Kluber vs Rangers, Sox-Twins
A look at what’s happening around the majors today: ___ UP AND DOWN Shohei Ohtani (1-0, 2.10 ERA) makes his sixth pitching start of the season when the Angels face Aaron Civale (5-1, 3.40) and the Indians. Ohtani hit his major league-leading 14th home run during Tuesday night's 6-5 loss to Cleveland, connecting for the third straight day. The two-way star is the first pitcher since 1900 to rack up at least 40 strikeouts and allow 11 or fewer hits over his first five starts of a season. Los Angeles will again be without three-time AL MVP Mike Trout, who was placed on the injured list Tuesday with a strained right calf. Trout could be sidelined past the All-Star break after getting hurt on the bases Monday night. He is expected to miss six to eight weeks. “I felt a pop,” Trout said. "I knew it was bad when it happened. I’ve never felt anything like this before.” Trout leads the majors with a 1.090 OPS. The outfielder is hitting .333 with eight home runs and 18 RBIs. Wed May 19 202102:48Turnbull gets MLB's 5th no-hitter, Tigers beat Mariners 5-0
SEATTLE (AP) — Spencer Turnbull pitched the fifth no-hitter in the majors this season, sending the Detroit Tigers to a 5-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Turnbull, who led the big leagues with 17 losses two years ago, had never gone more than seven innings in any of his previous 49 starts over three seasons. The five no-hitters through May 18 match the 1917 season for the most in baseball history by that date. Turnbull’s no-hitter was the eighth in Tigers history and their first since Justin Verlander’s in Toronto on May 7, 2011. The 28-year-old right-hander got a great defensive play from third baseman Jeimer Candelario in the seventh inning and then struck out Mitch Haniger in the ninth to end it. Turnbull (3-2) struck out nine and walked two. Turnbull threw 117 pitches, 77 for strikes. Haniger was the only batter to hit the ball hard enough to threaten a base hit. METS 4, BRAVES 3 ATLANTA (AP) — The New York Mets got homers from Jonathan Villar and Tomás Nido, an... [More]

Fri May 14 202103:36LEADING OFF: Yanks' outbreak, Miley chases Vander Meer
A look at what's happening around the majors today: ___ COVID CONCERN The virus-stricken Yankees are set to open a series in Baltimore a day after revealing shortstop Gleyber Torres tested positive for the coronavirus despite being fully vaccinated and having previously had COVID-19. Torres is among eight so-called breakthrough positives among the Yankees — people who tested positive despite being fully vaccinated. “Certainly unexpected,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Torres. “Obviously everyone, Major League Baseball, that’s in charge of testing is looking into that. The variants that could be out there if that is the case.” The Yankees also have three coaches and four traveling staffers who have tested positive. Boone said all eight are asymptomatic but continue to test positive. The Yankees said the team is undergoing additional testing and contact tracing, with the assistance of the baseball commissioner’s office and its medical experts.
