Angels acquired RHP Fernando Salas and 3B David Freese from the Cardinals in exchange for OFs Peter Bourjos and Randal Grichuk.
Salas was terrific for the Cards in 2011, but he's been up-and-down the last two seasons, posting a 4.36 ERA. He's arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason and could have been a non-tender candidate. The Angels will use him in middle relief.

Fernando Salas served up a game-winning home run to Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy on Sunday in St. Louis.
The 10th-inning shot sailed into the left field bleachers at Busch Stadium and cost the Cardinals a chance at a three-game series sweep. Salas would probably be in line for save chances right now if he was pitching at all competently. He owns an 8.31 ERA in 4 1/3 innings.

According to MLB.com, an illness during spring training may have impacted Fernando Salas this season.
Salas recently passed a kidney stone. It wasn't previously known he was dealing with such an issue and could partly explain his early season struggles. Since his demotion, Salas has made four appearances, and has given up four earned runs and six hits in four innings.

Fernando Salas notched his first save since August 11 in St. Louis' 2-1 win over the Brewers on Tuesday.
After Marc Rzepczynski walked Prince Fielder to lead off the ninth, Salas walked Casey McGehee before retiring Yuniesky Betancourt on a failed sacrifice bunt. He then induced Mark Kotsay into a game-ending double play. By all indications, Salas is still the primary stopper in St. Louis, but with the Cardinals out of the race in the National League Central, it wouldn't be surprising to see them mix in Jason Motte more and more as they play out the string.
