Thu Mar 23 202310:59Adam Wainwright To Open Year On Injured List
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright (groin) will begin the season on the injured list with a groin strain, according to manager Oliver Marmol. Wainwright is expected to be out for multiple weeks after getting injured during a workout with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday. The 41-year-old's already declining fantasy appeal takes another hit to begin the 2023 regular season, but he should be able to make his season debut sometime in April. With Wainwright now on the shelf, Jake Woodford will open the year in St. Louis' starting rotation.

Wed Mar 8 202311:30Adam Wainwright To Start Game 1 For Team USA
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright will start Game 1 of the World Baseball Classic for Team USA on Saturday night against Team Great Britain. Wainwright hasn't looked good in his first two Grapefruit League starts in spring training, topping out in the upper-80s with his fastball, allowing eight hits and four earned runs while walking one and striking out four in five innings of work. The 41-year-old was apparently dealing with some muscle issues in his back and legs, so it will be interesting to see if he looks any better this weekend against a team that Team USA should be able to beat easily. With his velocity dipping with age in recent seasons, Wainwright isn't very attractive to fantasy managers in what is expected to be the final season of his excellent career.

Thu Mar 2 202316:35Injuries Affecting Adam Wainwright's Velocity
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright (back, finger) had a burn on his index finger and the skin gave way during his Grapefruit League start on Thursday. He has also been trying to get a muscle in his leg/lower back to engage after experiencing back spasms. The back issue has limited his leg drive and his velocity in camp. The 41-year-old veteran allowed three runs in three innings of work on Thursday against the Houston Astros. He topped out at only 86 mph. Wainwright is set to pitch for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, but it's fair to wonder if he'll go through with that if he continues to have back issues. This isn't the best news for an aging pitcher that was already experiencing a dip in velocity and strikeout rate as he heads into his 18th and final MLB season.

Fri Oct 28 202214:14Adam Wainwright Signs One-Year Deal With Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals re-signed right-hander Adam Wainwright to a one-year, $17.5 million deal on Friday. The 41-year-old veteran will have $10 million deferred and will make an extra $500,000 each for 28 and 30 starts, plus other awards/bonuses. The 2023 season could very well be Wainwright's last in the big leagues. He was decent for the Red Birds in 2022, going 11-12 with a 3.71 ERA (3.66 FIP), a 1.28 WHIP, 143 strikeouts and 54 walks in 191 2/3 innings over his 32 starts. Considering his age and the poor finish to his season, Wainwright probably won't be much more than an innings-eater for fantasy managers in deeper leagues.

According to a tweet from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold on Wednesday, veteran starting pitcher Adam Wainwright will reportedly be back next season on the team. The veteran enjoyed another strong season for St. Louis, pitching to a 3.71 ERA, a 3.66 FIP, 143 strikeouts and 54 walks. The Cardinals' other rotation options include the likes of Miles Mikolas, Jordan Montgomery, Jack Flaherty, Dakota Hudson, Steven Matz, and Adrian Pallante.

Mon Sep 26 202214:39Adam Wainwright Struggles Against Dodgers On Sunday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright struggled on Sunday in his start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The veteran gave up six hits, four earned runs, and three walks in three innings of work against the National League West winners. He didn't surrender a home run on the day, but only had one strikeout, five swinging strikes, and a 15% CSW rate. For the season, Wainwright has logged a 3.51 ERA and a 3.62 in 187 innings for St. Louis. He's logged 139 strikeouts compared to 52 walks allowed.

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright pitched well in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Padres. He took a no-decision, tossing seven shutout frames with a walk and 10 strikeouts. The 40-year-old is enjoying another strong season and is now 5-4 with a 2.75 ERA, 48 strikeouts and 20 walks over his first 10 starts. He will look to keep things going in his next start against the Cubs.

Thu May 12 202214:04Adam Wainwright Could Return To Rotation Sunday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright has cleared the league's COVID-19 protocols and threw a bullpen session on Thursday, potentially lining him up to return from the injured list to start on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants. Wainwright tested positive for the virus almost a week ago, but he has no symptoms and has tested negative twice since then. The 40-year-old right-hander has been solid this year with a 3.18 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP, 13 walks and 28 strikeouts over six starts and 34 innings, but he'll inevitably be a much more risky fantasy starter on Sunday against the Giants because he'll be potentially limited from a pitch-count perspective in his first game back.

Mon Mar 28 202211:32Adam Wainwright Will Start On Opening Day
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright will start on Opening Day on April 7 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 40-year-old right-hander will get the nod with Jack Flaherty set to open the year on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation. Wainwright has been very solid for the Cardinals the last two seasons and had a 17-7 record, 3.05 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and a 174:50 K:BB in 32 starts over 206 1/3 innings last season. He doesn't have elite velocity, but Wainwright continues to induce weak contact and keeps the ball in the yard. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect Wainwright to be better than he's been the last two seasons, but he can at least provide rotation stability and potentially another double-digit win season.

Wed Mar 23 202217:59Adam Wainwright Pitches Three Innings On Wednesday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright got the start in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Houston Astros and pitched three innings. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three and not issuing a walk. One of the hits he allowed was a two-run home run. Wainwright proved last season that he could still have significant fantasy value, and there's not reason to believe this year will be any different. He's a reliable, low-variance pitcher who should be rostered in all eligible formats.

Fri Mar 18 202222:54Adam Wainwright Tosses Two Innings On Friday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright threw two solid innings in his spring debut on Friday against the Houston Astros. The veteran righty got the start and allowed one run on two hits while striking out one without issuing a walk. With Jack Flaherty (shoulder) out for an indefinite amount of time, Wainwright should once again be the anchor of this rotation. He's not an exciting fantasy option, but he'll get the job done and can be drafted in the later rounds.

Thu Oct 7 202101:06Adam Wainwright Solid In The Wild Card Game
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright was solid in his National League Wild Card Game start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five. He seemed to get stronger as the night went along, and was allowed to hit with runners on base only to be lifted the very next inning after a swinging bunt single by Trea Turner. It was the first of several atrocious managerial decisions by Mike Schildt in a winner-take-all game. The 40-year-old Wainwright will be back for at least one more season in 2022, and showed that he had plenty left in the tank this season.

Tue Sep 28 202123:02Adam Wainwright Earns Victory On Tuesday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright earned the victory while going six innings during a 6-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. The 40-year-old limited the damage, allowing seven hits, two walks, and two earned runs while striking out four during the quality start. The three-time All-Star has had a stellar season, posting 17 wins, 3.05 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 174 strikeouts across 206 1/3 innings pitched. While Wainwright plans to be back with the Cardinals for the 2022 season, he should be treated as a solid back-of-the-rotation option in redraft leagues as opposed to the workhorse version in 2021.

Fri Sep 24 202100:00Adam Wainwright Struggles On Thursday

Sat Sep 18 202121:50Adam Wainwright Works Around Traffic In Another Quality Start
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright worked around some base runners to end up with another quality start. Pitching on Saturday against the San Diego Padres, Wainwright pitched six innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits. He did not issue a walk and struck out two. While it wasn't "Waino" at his best, he showed how excellent he is as a pitcher, taking a day where he didn't have his best stuff and holding a powerful Padres lineup to just two runs. The 40-year-old has a 2.89 ERA this season.

Wed Sep 8 202123:36Adam Wainwright Pitches Into The Ninth Inning Again
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright worked into the ninth inning again in Wednesday's start. He coughed up two runs in the ninth and wasn't able to finish the game, also losing the quality start in the process. In total, he tossed 8 1/3 innings against a powerful Dodgers lineup, allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks, striking out four. It was a good start regardless, earning "Waino" his 15th win of the season, but it would have been a much prettier line if he'd taken a seat after eight innings.

Tue Sep 7 202122:38Adam Wainwright Intends To Pitch In 2022
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright said he intends on pitching in the 2022 season, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reported. There have been rumors the 40-year-old ace is considering retirement, but with teammate Yadier Molina locked in for one more season, there could be a farewell tour for the duo on the horizon. Wainwright and the Cards would have to figure out a new contract, but fantasy managers should still be excited the dominant right-hander might be sticking around. Wainwright is enjoying a resurgence this season, sporting a 14-7 record with an impressive 2.91 ERA and 1.03 WHIP through 176 innings pitched.

Sun Aug 29 202103:43Adam Wainwright Brilliant Again On Saturday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright was excellent again on Saturday, picking up another win and another quality start. The veteran righty went seven innings, allowing three hits and a walk without letting a run cross the plate. He struck out five and threw 93 pitches, 66 for strikes. It's been an outstanding season for the soon to be 40-year-old, as he'll take a 13-7 record and a 2.97 ERA with him to the mound for his next start. There's still plenty left in the talk for "Waino" it seems.

Sun Aug 22 202118:11Adam Wainwright Pitches Well Again On Sunday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright was outstanding again on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He tossed eight scoreless innings, allowing just two hits without issuing a walk and striking out nine. The veteran righty earned the win with his strong effort, improving to 12-7 and lowering his ERA to 3.10. 2020 and 2021 have been Wainwright's best seasons since at least 2014. The 39-year-old has plenty left in the tank and should be started in all formats every time out.

Tue Aug 17 202123:24Adam Wainwright Loses Despite A Quality Start
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright pitched well again on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers, but took a loss despite a quality start. The veteran hurler went six innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits and two walks, striking out four. Wainwright allowed plenty of base runners throughout the game, but was mostly able to keep them from crossing home plate. The loss drops his record to 11-7 but lowered his ERA to 3.26.
