The defending AL champion Rays acquired Cruz, one of baseball’s most proven sluggers, in a four-player trade with Minnesota on Thursday night. Tampa Bay, in a tight race with Boston atop the AL East, received Cruz and minor leaguer Calvin Faucher from the struggling Twins in exchange for minor league right-handers Joe Ryan and Drew Strotman. The 41-year-old Cruz has 436 career homers and 1,202 RBIs. He’ll bring some needed pop to Tampa Bay’s lineup and should help the Rays against left-handers. They’re hitting .226 versus lefties. DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers reassigned infielder Renato Núñez to the team's alternate training site and reassigned right-hander Wily Peralta to minor league camp. The Tigers also announced Tuesday that they have reassigned left-hander Ian Krol, right-hander Erasmo Ramírez and catchers Dustin Garneau and Eric Haase to the alternate training site in Toledo, Ohio. Núñez hit 31 home runs for Baltimore in 2019, then batted .256 with 12 homers in the shortened 2020 season. He was released by the Orioles after last season and agreed to a minor league deal with the Tigers. Peralta also joined the Tigers on a minor league deal. DETROIT (AP) — The Tigers have agreed to a minor league contract with right-hander Wily Peralta. Detroit said Friday that Peralta will receive an invite to major league spring training. The 31-year-old Peralta hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2019, when he was 2-4 with a 5.80 ERA in 42 relief appearances for Kansas City. He had 14 saves for the Royals the year before that. Detroit general manager Al Avila said earlier in the week that the Tigers were still looking to add more pitching, and that at least one more starter would be ideal.
