"We'll just go step by step, see how I feel," De La Rosa said. He is expected to return before the end of the season.

RHP Rubby De La Rosa (elbow strain) underwent a platelet rich plasma injection into his elbow to facilitate the healing process. "I feel awesome," De La Rosa said. "I don't feel any more pain there. It's not a big deal like people think it is." De La Rosa played catch from 60 feet Wednesday, the second time he has thrown since being placed on the disabled list May 27. He is not expected back until late August at the earliest.

RHP Rubby De La Rosa will not require a second Tommy John surgery, he said Monday, after Dr. James Andrews studied the most recent MRI given after De La Rosa was placed on the disabled list retroactive May 26. "It's a situation that the rest is going to help him and he's going to come back strong," manager Chip Hale said. De La Rosa said Andrews told him the right ulnar collateral ligament was stretched and needed time to calm down. The new ligament was installed on Aug. 9, 2001, when Dr. Andrews performed Tommy John surgery. De La Rosa said he will not pick up a ball for two more weeks but hopes to return by August/September.

RHP Rubby De La Rosa (right elbow sprain) said he will not pick up a baseball for a month after being shut down following his Wednesday start in Pittsburgh. The D-backs have sent the results of De La Rosa's Friday MRI to Dr. James Andrews, who performed Tommy John surgery on De La Rosa on Aug. 9, 2011. "He wanted to look at it compared to what he had for baseline stuff," Arizona manager Chip Hale said. De La Rosa will continue with conditioning and training while not throwing.

RHP Rubby De La Rosa (sprained right ulnar collateral ligament) was placed on the disabled list Friday, three days after feeling pain while going 4 1/3 innings in a 5-4 loss at Pittsburgh. He hit 97 mph in that game. "Rubby was throwing the heck out of the ball," manager Chip Hale said. "That's when it is hard to tell a guy's hurt, because the velocity is still there." A sprained UCL is often the precursor to Tommy John surgery, which De La Rosa already has had once in his career while with the Dodgers on Aug. 9, 2011. De La Rosa had an MRI on Friday and the D-backs said team orthopedist Dr. Gary Waslewski will consult with Dr. James Andrews, who performed the 2011 surgery. At this point, surgery does not appear to be necessary.

RHP Rubby De La Rosa fell to 4-5, primarily because he gave up homers to David Freese and Sean Rodriguez. He had skipped his previous scheduled start because of groin soreness but had been stingy in going 3-1 in his previous four starts. "He just tired out. Coming off the layoff we were real cognizant of how many pitches he was going to go. He was going to be right around 100 -- it was his game there in the fifth inning," said manager Chip Hale. De La Rosa threw 92 pitches, allowing five runs on nine hits in 4-1/3 innings, and gave up David Freese's winning homer in the fifth, the last batter he faced. "Anything but a home run there," Hale said. "Maybe they tie the game, get him out. But he hung a slider."

RHP Rubby De La Rosa will be skipped in his next turn through the rotation, manager Chip Hale said, because of off days Thursday and Monday. De La Rosa also has "some nagging groin issues, some blister stuff ... nothing that would keep him out," Hale said. "If we had no days off, he would pitch. It's an opportunity to give him a little bit of a break. He is obviously pitching very well." De La Rosa is 4-4 with a 3.53 ERA in 10 appearances, seven starts, this season. He has the best ERA among the starters, and has given up seven runs in his last 32 2/3 over five starts, four quality. "We feel like it is best," Hale said. De La Rosa will miss 10 days, while the rest will enable the rest of the rotation to pitch on normal rest, four or five days' worth. "This will give everybody an extra day again, but not two or three. I don't think any of them felt very comfortable getting six or seven days off."

RHP Rubby De La Rosa struck out a career-high 10 in seven innings Wednesday, becoming the first Arizona pitcher to strike out at least 10 in at least seven scoreless innings since Ian Kennedy struck out 12 in eight scoreless innings against Pittsburgh on Sept. 19, 2011. De La Rosa gave up two singles and two walks. "He had 97 (mph) and was throwing it on the corners," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "Had a slider that wasn't easy to pick up. That's as good as I've ever seen him. If you are throwing 95 to 97 and putting movement on it and putting it on the corners, it's going to be a long day. That's all there is to it."

RHP Rubby De La Rosa had his best start of the season, working into the seventh inning for the first time in four starts while giving up one run and three hits. He struck out six, walked one and hit two. "He did a nice job," Arizona manager Chip Hale said. "Got us into the seventh inning. He's growing as a pitcher." De La Rosa is 2-3, but the other victory came in relief, when he was forced into an extra-inning game in San Francisco on Monday. De La Rosa had gone longer than 4 2/3 innings in his previous starts. "The fastball command improved as the night went on," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "The fastball stayed at 95 (mph) and hotter, 96, 97, 98. Then the slider got better as the game went on. It was probably as good of a right-hand slider as we have seen this year to date."
