GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Chicago White Sox opened spring training still waiting for Manny Machado."We'll just see when it happens," first baseman Yonder Alonso, Machado's brother-in-law, said Wednesday.Machado, among the offseason's top free agents, still hasn't agreed to a deal. Alonso spoke with the All-Star infielder on Tuesday."We didn't talk about baseball," Alonso said.Chicago hasn't had a winning season since 2012 and is coming off a 100-loss season. The White Sox have added Alonso, right-handers Ivan Nova, Kelvin Herrera and Alex Colome, and outfielder Jon Jay.Dozens of free agents remain on the market."It seems that moves drifting into spring training is becoming a bit of the new normal," general manager Rick Hahn said. "We try to be disciplined in terms of our focus. Certainly we don't want to spend any time negotiating through the media or talking about where things sit publicly until there's some finality."For now at least, Hahn said, "The focus is going to be on the guys in the room, and putting them in the best position to win."Manager Rick Renteria said young players such as outfielder Eloy Jimenez and pitcher Dylan Cease get closer to their major league debuts."We're all excited about all the possibilities as we're moving forward, because now the time has been put in," Renteria said.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Sat Jan 26 201918:29White Sox GM: Don't expect team to sign both Machado, Harper
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox say they have a strong pitch for Manny Machado and Bryce Harper. Just don't expect them to sign both star sluggers.General manager Rick Hahn doused that idea Saturday, saying the White Sox aren't likely to get both premier free agents due to concerns about future payroll flexibility."These are obviously not the last two free agents that we intend to add in the future," Hahn said at the team's annual fan convention. "Having two commitments of the magnitude they're gonna require on the same roster probably limits your flexibility and might not be the strongest move for us long term."The White Sox have six straight losing seasons. They went 62-100 last year — the most losses for them since the 1970 team dropped a franchise-record 106.What they're selling is hope, that they're poised to turn the corner. Adding a star in his prime at age 26, whether it's Machado or Harper, could accelerate the rebuild. That's been the pitch to the offseason's two biggest... [More]
Fri Jan 25 201919:28No word on Machado, Harper as White Sox begin fan convention
CHICAGO (AP) — White Sox general manager Rick Hahn jumped right on the elephant in the room. Well, the elephant that was noticeably missing from the room.Choosing his words carefully while dancing around baseball's rules for the discussion of free agents, Hahn said he will be disappointed if sluggers Manny Machado and Bryce Harper both sign with another team. But Hahn also sounded a defiant tone."The fact that we are now sitting here in a potential position or at least in a position where if we don't convert people are going to be disappointed I think is an important step forward for this organization," Hahn said Friday before the start of the team's annual fan convention."We belong at the table in these negotiations. We belong part of these negotiations for premium talent and regardless of what happens over the next several weeks with either of these two players we plan to continue to be at the table and continue to attempt to convert on these guys."Coming off six consecutive losing seasons,... Fri Aug 10 201815:23FANTASY PLAYS: Deep-season baseball targets on waivers
Fantasy baseball trade deadlines have either passed or are about to pass and even this deep into the season, there's still value on many waiver wires. Here are a few players that can help you in the long and short term.PLAYERS TO PICK UPRYAN MADSON, RP, Washington Nationals (20 percent owned in CBS Sports leagues) — Madson's season long peripheral stats may not impress, but with Kelvin Herrera on the DL, he'll temporarily take over as closer. Madson has experience closing out games and could provide a few weeks of save opportunities. Bid aggressively if you want to grab him off the waiver wire.RANDALL GRICHUK, OF, Toronto Blue Jays (28 percent) — Some considered Grichuk a deep sleeper coming into the 2018 season but he slumped early on. By July 13 he had a .199 batting average. He's turned things around since then, batting .310 with five homers and 14 RBIs. He probably won't continue to hit for high average, but his power bat could help you down the stretch.MANUEL MARGOT, OF, San Diego... [More]
