Holmberg (1-0) gave up two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four in six innings against the Pirates on Thursday.

Holmberg was called up from Triple-A and made his season debut, filling in for Johnny Cueto -- who was dealt to Kansas City on Sunday. The Reds provided 15 runs of support, and the 24-year-old lefty picked up his first win of the season. He'll draw another start Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Holmberg is listed as the starting pitcher in Thursday's lineup.

As expected, Holmberg will come up from Triple-A to take the hill Thursday against the Pirates. The 24-year-old will fill the spot of Johnny Cueto, who was dealt to the Royals earlier in the week. In 108.1 innings at Triple-A this season, Holmberg has posted a 4.40 ERA with a 61:38 K:BB.

The 24-year-old lefty will get the first crack at replacing Johnny Cueto in the rotation, starting Thursday opposite Jeff Locke. Holmberg has struggled to a 4.40 ERA, 1.54 ERA, and 61:38 K:BB in 108.1 innings with Triple-A Louisville this season, and could ultimately face competition for a rotation spot from the likes of John Lamb and Robert Stephenson.

Holmberg will not be recalled to start against Miami.

The plan was for Holmberg to come up to start in place of Josh Smith, but a rainout Wednesday will allow the Reds to go without a fifth starter this week. Mike Lorenzen will start Thursday, with Mike Leake, Anthony DeSclafani and Johnny Cueto to follow in the final three games of the series.

Holmberg will be recalled to start Thursday against the Marlins, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

There was plenty of speculation after Holmberg was scratched from his scheduled start for Triple-A Louisville on Monday, but the club has confirmed that the lefty will be up to take Josh Smith's turn in the rotation. Holmberg has struggled to a 4.78 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 16 appearances (15 starts) with Louisville this season, and he may only be up for an outing or two, as Raisel Iglesias (oblique) appears to be nearing a return.

The Reds will likely turn to Holmberg to start Thursday's game in place of Josh Smith, though they won't commit to him yet. Until it's etched in stone ... I don't think we'll wait till Wednesday," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We have a pitcher in mind, but we haven't made a full commitment to that yet."

Holmberg was scratched from his start at Triple-A Louisville on Monday, presumably in anticipation of starting Thursday against the Marlins. In 15 starts this year at Louisville, Holmberg has a 4.78 ERA and 1.629 WHIP.

The Reds sent a couple other borderline rotation options to Triple-A on Monday, and this essentially ensures that Tony Cingrani and Anthony DeSclafani will break camp in the Reds' rotation. It is a bit of a surprise that Holmberg, especially, was sent down this early in camp, but the Reds clearly view him as a depth piece more than a viable member of the rotation at this point. Jason Marquis now looks like the front-runner to start the year in the rotation if Homer Bailey (forearm) is forced to start the year on the DL.

Holmberg threw three scoreless innings Monday in a split-squad start against the Rockies, allowing four hits while striking out four.

Holmberg remains in competition for one of the openings in the Reds rotation. The could have three spots open to begin the season, as it looks as if Homer Bailey won't be ready for Opening Day.

Holmberg reported to camp 30 pounds lighter than last spring, when the Reds deemed him to be overweight.

Holmberg is a long shot to win the fifth starter's job for the team, but at least he was starting to turn matters around in September after an awful first trip with the Reds.

Holmberg picked up his second win of the season over Milwaukee Thursday, going six innings and allowing two runs on three hits and walk while striking out two.

Holmberg finishes 2-2 on the season in five games started for the Reds, posting a 4.80 ERA.

Holmberg (1-2) took the loss on Friday against the Cardinals as he tossed six innings on five hits, while giving up two runs and three walks.

It was a decent quality start for Holmberg as he threw 106 pitches on the night, but he did give up two home runs in the first inning to Randall Grichuk and Matt Holliday. Holmberg should see one more start before the season is over.

Holmberg will start Saturday against the Brewers, filling in for the injured Dylan Axelrod.

Holmberg turned in a solid performance Monday in relief of Axelrod, coming in to throw 5.2 scoreless innings after getting pressed into service. It was his first good outing with the Reds this year, and his matchup Saturday with the Brewers isn't a favorable one, given all their right-handed hitters.

The Reds called up Holmberg again Monday.

This time it's unlikely that the Reds will turn to Holmberg for another start after he got pounded twice.

Holmberg's second start for the Reds was just as disastrous as his first, as he was clobbered for six runs on five hits and four walks over 2.2 innings against the Braves on Thursday. Acquired from the Diamondbacks as part of the Ryan Hanigan trade this past offseason, Holmberg has struggled at Louisville as well (4.64 ERA, 1.66 WHIP), but the team isn't ready to completely give up on him yet. Daniel Corcino was recalled in the corresponding move and figures to start next Tuesday, with Homer Bailey still shut down with an elbow injury.

Holmberg was hit hard against Atlanta on Thursday, surrendering six runs and five hits in just 2.2 innings. He issued four walks and struck out a pair.

Holmberg struggled from the onset, but the third inning was the backbreaker when he gave up five runs. The damage for Holmberg actually could have been worse, but reliever Pedro Villarreal stopped the bleeding by getting a strikeout with the bases loaded. Holmberg was roughed up in his previous start on July 8, so he's been unimpressive in limited action with the big club. Whether or not Holmberg makes another start could depend on the status of Homer Bailey, who is currently on the DL with an elbow injury. Then again, Holmberg was so unproductive Thursday that the Reds might try to find another option if Bailey isn't ready. If Holmberg does get another starting nod, it would likely come at Pittsburgh on August 30.
