CHICAGO (AP) — Prized Chicago White Sox second baseman Nick Madrigal is headed to the 10-day injured list because of a separated left shoulder.General manager Rick Hahn was optimistic the rookie will return by the end of the month, though he also said Wednesday offseason surgery might be needed.Madrigal was hurt sliding into third trying to advance from first on a single to center at Milwaukee on Tuesday. He had five hits in his first 17 major league at-bats after being called up Friday from the team’s auxiliary site in Schaumburg, Illinois.Hahn also said slugger Edwin Encarnación is day to day after leaving Tuesday’s game because of inflammation near his left shoulder, in the joint between his collarbone and sternum. The White Sox had won six straight prior to Wednesday’s home game against the Brewers.Hahn said Tim Anderson (strained right groin) will begin workouts in Schaumburg on Thursday. The White Sox hope to have the 2019 major league batting champion back in their lineup next week.Hahn is also optimistic left-hander Carlos Rodon and righty Reynaldo Lopez will return from in the next few weeks after being sidelined because of soreness in their pitching shoulders. He said scans on Rodon showed no structural damage, though Lopez fell a “half-step behind” in his rehab because of a stomach illness.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

WASHINGTON (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer left his start for the Nationals against the New York Mets after just one inning Wednesday night.Washington did not immediately announce why Scherzer was taken out of the game after merely 27 pitches. He was replaced in the top of the second by Erick Fedde.Scherzer was not as sharp as usual at the outset Wednesday, going 2-0 counts against each of New York's initial two batters, walking one and giving up a single to the other. The Mets eventually went ahead in the first on Dominic Smith's sacrifice fly.Scherzer entered the game with an 0-1 record and 2.84 ERA this season.___More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

The St. Louis Cardinals returned to the field for light workouts Wednesday, nearly a week after an outbreak of COVID-19 forced the club and its staff members to quarantine in Milwaukee and set the rest of their season into upheaval.Cardinals manager Mike Shildt called it “a breath of fresh air” after five days spent in The Pfister Hotel, where players tried to keep their arms limber by throwing baseballs into mattresses and pillows. The Cardinals had returned 13 positive tests in their traveling party, seven of them players, forcing them to suspend their season. They were finally cleared to travel back to St. Louis late Tuesday, when they returned negative tests for the second straight day. Their flight left Wednesday morning and that gave them the afternoon and Thursday to get in workouts. The Cardinals will resume their season against the Chicago Cubs on Friday night at Busch Stadium.“You can't take for granted even the freedom we have in a somewhat limited-freedom world when you're in... ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves are facing lineup changes after placing second baseman Ozzie Albies and designated hitter Matt Adams on the 10-day injured list.In another move on Wednesday, outfielder Nick Markakis was reinstated from the restricted list. Markakis announced on July 29 that he was returning to the team, three weeks after opting out due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.Albies is batting only .159 after he was held without a hit in Tuesday night's 10-1 win over Toronto. WASHINGTON (AP) — Juan Soto was set to make his 2020 debut for the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night against the New York Mets, starting in left field and batting cleanup after beginning the season on the COVID-19 injured list. The slugger failed a coronavirus test — he later said he thought it was a false positive — and went on the injured list on opening day July 23. He missed Washington’s first eight games of the truncated season. Soto was reinstated from the IL on Tuesday, but didn't play in a 5-3 victory over the Mets, instead hopping atop the dugout to celebrate homers by teammates Howie Kendrick and Josh Harrison. “I talked to him last night. He did everything yesterday and he felt good. He said he’s ready,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday. “He took a bunch of swings yesterday, I know. He ran. He did some outfield work. He said he feels like he can go out there.”Soto produced 34 homers and 110 RBIs in the 2019 regular season and helped the Nationals win their... [More]

In baseball, a day off is something to savor.A whole series is a different matter.“I think in baseball, it’s very routine-oriented, and you start interrupting routines, it gets a little hairy,” Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We’ll just ad-lib and do the best we can with it. Can’t control it, so no sense in getting too upset about it.”Gardenhire was speaking Tuesday, after the Tigers' one-day break turned into a four-day layoff. Detroit's series against St. Louis was called off because of issues the Cardinals are having with the coronavirus — and that's just one major gap in the schedule already brought on by COVID-19. When a team is sidelined by the virus, it affects future opponents as well, and leaves players and managers in an unusual holding pattern.“Being a starting pitcher, you’re creatures of habit, and so it’s nice to get on a routine," Milwaukee left-hander Brett Anderson said. "But with the way 2020 is going, you kind of have to be comfortable being uncomfortable.”Anderson... [More]

BALTIMORE (AP) — After enduring one final delay in their effort to return from an eight-day, coronavirus-induced hiatus, the Miami Marlins found enough power and pitching within their vastly overhauled roster to beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-0 Tuesday night.Francisco Cervelli and Jesús Aguilar homered for the Marlins, who had their season halted after 18 players tested positive for COVID-19 following the opening series in Philadelphia.Pablo López (1-0) threw five innings of two-hit ball and the bullpen allowed just one hit in Miami’s first shutout victory since Sept. 8 against Kansas City.Late Tuesday afternoon, the Marlins were still awaiting the result of further COVID-19 tests, a process that stalled their arrival at Camden Yards and pushed back the scheduled 7:35 p.m. start by 41 minutes.Orioles starter John Means (0-1) allowed one run and two hits in 4 2/3 innings. He retired 13 in a row before Cervelli drove a 3-1 pitch into the left-field seats to end the left-hander’s night. After... [More]

MIAMI (AP) — Scrambling for replacements following a coronavirus outbreak, the Miami Marlins added a Moran, a Morin, two pitchers named Josh Smith and a former Olympic medalist in speedskating. Also among the 18 players joining the Marlins' 30-man roster as they resumed their virus-disrupted season in Baltimore on Tuesday night were outfielder Monte Harrison and right-hander Jose Guzman, highly regarded prospects reaching the majors for the first time. Another newcomer was pitcher Richard Bleier, returning to his former ballpark after being acquired from the Orioles in a trade over the weekend. He pitched a scoreless inning as the Marlins won 4-0.“We’ve been through a lot,” manager Don Mattingly said. “It felt good to get out there.”Before the game, starting pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Caleb Smith joined Jose Urena on the injured list, leaving the Marlins without three-fifths of their rotation. Eight of their 12 opening-day relievers were also on the IL, as was shortstop Miguel Rojas.With... [More]
