F Derrick Williams ignited the Knicks (15-18) by scoring 16 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter on Tuesday, helping New York end a four-game losing streak with a 108-96 win over the Detroit Pistons at Madison Square Garden.Williams, who played a season high 29 minutes as a reserve, hit 5-of-6 shots from the field. He's averaging 47 percent from the field in his last five games.

With Kristaps Porzingis (left quad strain) sidelined Monday, Williams and Kyle O'Quinn both received extended chances to audition for the starting power forward job. It was Williams who shined the brightest of the two, surpassing the 20-point mark for the second straight game. Though he did turn over the ball six times, Williams made up for it by showcasing plenty of touch near the rim to go along with impressive range from deep. At the very least, the former No. 2 overall pick is making a strong case for an integral rotation role with the Knicks, as he's averaging 16.7 points on 63 percent shooting from the field during the preseason.

Williams tallied a game-high 23 points (7-11 FG, 9-9 FT), four rebounds, and a steal in Friday's 115-104 victory over the Wizards.

Williams' strong effort resembled some of the offensive production he was able to generate in the final month of the 2014-15 campaign for the Kings, during which he averaged 14.8 points per game. The 24-year-old is fighting to carve out a role amidst a crowded power forward field for the Knicks that also includes Kyle O'Quinn, Lou Admunson and rookie Kristaps Prozingis. Williams has certainly flashed some scoring punch over his four-year career, but it remains to be seen if he will be able to maintain the consistency necessary to secure a prominent role this season.

Williams is working on his three-point shooting and intermediate game, and he will be in the mix for power forward minutes according to President Phil Jackson, Charley Rosen of ESPN reports.

Williams signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Knicks on Friday, ESPN reports.

Following the reported signings of Williams and Robin Lopez, the Knicks' frontcourt is coming into focus for the upcoming campaign. In nearly two-previous seasons with the Kings, he averaged 8.4 points (on 44 percent shooting), 3.5 rebounds, and 0.7 assists in 22 minutes across 141 outings.

Williams did not receive a qualifying offer from the Kings, making him an unrestricted free agent, NBA.com reports.

Williams has failed to live up to the lofty expectations he had coming into the NBA as the No. 2 pick in the 2010 draft, and it's hard to expect much production from him going forward. He's had plenty of opportunities to step up and be a significant part of an NBA rotation with both the Timberwolves and Kings, but he's never staked his claim to being a big cog in the NBA. Some team will take a flier on Williams, but he'll likely flame out of the NBA in a few years, as he seems destined to be a guy who never realizes his vast potential.

Williams averaged 8.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 0.7 three-pointers, 0.7 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.1 blocks in 20 minutes per game during 74 regular season games in the 2014-15 season.

The second overall pick of the 2011 draft continued his descent into NBA obscurity as he struggled to produce in a bench role this season. However, due to injuries to Rudy Gay (concussion) and DeMarcus Cousins (foot) toward the end of the season, Williams saw an increase in action, averaging 14.8 points and 3.9 rebounds through nine games in April. Williams is on the books for a qualifying offer of $8.7 million in 2015-16, which is unlikely to be picked up by the Kings.

Williams finished with 22 points (9-16 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 2-4 FT), six rebounds and three assists in 34 minutes off the bench during Wednesday's win over the Lakers.

Williams saw a ton of extended playing time down the stretch of the season due to injuries from those higher up in the depth chart. Over his final six games of the season, Williams averaged 17.3 points and 4.8 rebounds, which showed a vast improvement from earlier in the season.

Williams scored 20 points (6-12 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 7-9 FT) with two assists and a steal in 29 minutes off the bench Monday.

He's now averaging 16.4 points, 4.6 boards and 1.4 steals over his last five games, as injuries in the Kings' frontcourt have opened up some minutes for Williams. He should be a decent play in the team's regular season finale on Wednesday in the second game of a home-and-home against the Lakers.

Williams will start at power forward Sunday in Denver, the Sacramento Bee reports.

In order to match up with the Nuggets, coach George Karl will place Williams in the starting five due to the potential absences to Rudy Gay (head) and DeMarcus Cousins (foot). Williams has received five nods this season, which he's used to average 10.2 points (on 49 percent shooting), 4.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 27 minutes.

Williams responded to coach George Karl's criticism of his rebounding by grabbing eight rebounds in Tuesday's win over the Timberwolves. Williams also put up 18 points (8-12 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 2-4 FT), one assist, and one block in 31 minutes off the bench.

Williams stepping up for one game is nothing new. He does this from time to time, but then he always regresses into mediocrity. If both DeMarcus Cousins (doubtful-foot) and Rudy Gay (questionable-headache) are out Wednesday, Williams could be worth a look in daily games, but Carl Landry (suspension) will also be back in action Wednesday.

Williams was called out by coach George Karl after Sunday's loss to the Jazz for his lack of rebounding, Cowbell Kingdom reports. Williams finished the game with nine points, two steals, one three-pointer, and zero rebounds, assists, or blocks in 26 minutes. "You shouldn't be playing 20 minutes a night and not getting a rebound," Karl said. "A coke machine can get a rebound in 20 minutes."

Williams' career trajectory has been in a steady decline since being draft No. 2 overall in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Timberwolves. Given his skills and athleticism, Williams should easily be able to find a consistent role in the NBA, but it seems a lack of effort and understanding of how to carve out a roll in the NBA has escaped Williams thus far. The one thing he still has in his favor is that he's only 23 years old. He seems more likely to flame out than to catch fire in the NBA. It wouldn't be surprising at all to see Williams playing in China with the rest of the NBA's would-be stars who could never commit to playing defense in the NBA.

Williams scored 15 points (5-9 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 3-4 FT) in 31 minutes in the loss to Philadelphia on Friday.

Williams saw a bump in minutes and scored effectively. He still only had three rebounds and has not topped three boards since Feb. 21. Williams can be a decent scorer, but won't provide much else for fantasy owners.

Williams posted 18 points (7-12 FG, 4-5 FT, 0-2 3Pt) to go with one rebound in 23 minutes of action Sunday against the Blazers.

Williams has struggled to make an impact this season, averaging just 6.9 points and 2.6 rebounds for the year. In spite of Sunday's solid scoring performance, he's still strictly a deep league option as long as Rudy Gay is healthy.

Williams scored 11 points and five rebounds in 17 minutes against the Celtics Friday night.

Williams saw more time thanks to the quick hook given to Carl Landry and could be more used in George Karl's system than he was previously. He's scored double-digit points in two straight games, after going nearly a month without reaching that level.

Williams (ankle) had 11 points (3-7 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 4-6 FT), four rebounds, and three assists in 31 minutes off the Kings' bench in the loss to the Bucks on Wednesday.

Williams missed the Tuesday loss to Chicago, but played his most minutes since Jan. 16. Despite the extra minutes, Williams only produced mediocre stats and should only be monitored in deeper leagues.

Williams' minutes are typically pretty modest, so with him dealing with an injury, it would not be surprising to see him fail to eclipse 20 minutes Wednesday.
