Fri Dec 8 202300:21Royals Sign Tyler Duffey, Mike Brosseau
The Kansas City Royals agreed to terms on minor-league deals with right-handers Tyler Duffey and Dan Altavilla, infielder Mike Brosseau and left-hander Sam Long on Thursday. Duffey and Brosseau are the most notable names. The 32-year-old Duffey made only one relief appearance with the Chicago Cubs in the majors in 2023, but he carries nine years of big-league experience with a career 4.57 ERA (3.97 FIP), 1.29 WHIP and six saves in 477 innings pitched. Brosseau, 29, hit just .205 (15-for-73) with four home runs and eight RBI in 29 games for the Milwaukee Brewers this past season before being cut and heading overseas to play in Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan. All four of KC's signings on Thursday will add minor-league depth for the 2024 campaign.

Fri Jan 27 202313:34Cubs Add Tyler Duffey On Minor-League Deal
The Chicago Cubs signed free-agent right-hander Tyler Duffey as a non-roster invitee on Friday, according to a source. Duffey will compete for a bullpen job in spring training. He made 295 appearances for the Minnesota Twins over the last eight seasons, and the Cubs have a good track record with these types of free-agent relievers. The 32-year-old veteran has a good shot of making the Cubs bullpen out of spring training. Last year with Minnesota, he had a 4.91 ERA (4.79 FIP), 1.36 WHIP, two saves and 21.1 percent strikeout rate in 44 innings over 40 relief appearances. In eight major-league seasons, he has a 4.57 ERA (3.96 FIP), 1.29 WHIP and six saves in 475 innings. If Duffey makes the big-league club, he won't have much fantasy appeal, if any.

Wed Aug 31 202211:14Tyler Duffey Signs With Yankees
The New York Yankees signed free-agent relief pitcher Tyler Duffey to an undisclosed deal on Wednesday. Duffey had a 1.88 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in 24 innings for the Minnesota Twins in the shortened 2020 season. In 44 innings pitched for Minnesota earlier this year, Duffey went 2-4 with a 4.91 ERA (4.81 FIP), a 1.36 WHIP and a 39:15 K:BB in 40 relief appearances, including two saves. The 31-year-old right-hander was also briefly with the Texas Rangers this year, but he didn't appear in the majors. Duffey will likely report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and he'll provide some veteran relief depth for the Yankees down the stretch and into the postseason.

Tue May 17 202200:58Tyler Duffey Earns First Save Of Season Monday
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Tyler Duffey picked up his first win of the season in Monday's 3-1 win over the A's. Duffey entered the game to pitch the ninth inning up by two and delivered a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. Duffey is second on the team in save opportunities but has converted just one of three of them so far and bullpen lead Emilio Pagan had pitched in the team's last three games prior to this one. Duffey does have four holds and a 3.00 ERA on the season, but Pagan is the bullpen arm for fantasy managers to roster at this time.

Sat Apr 9 202222:10Tyler Duffey Blows Save, Tagged With The Loss Saturday
Minnesota Twins pitcher Tyler Duffey allowed two runs on three hits while striking out one over one inning in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners. The right-hander was charged with a blown save and tagged with the loss. He surrendered a two-out double to Adam Frazier that plated Julio Rodrguez as the game-tying run. Ty France laced an RBI single off Duffey to give the Mariners the lead. The 31-year-old was given the first save opportunity of the season after the Twins dealt incumbent closer Taylor Rogers to the San Diego Padres on Opening Day. Duffey was solid in 2021, posting a 3.18 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 61:28 K: BB over 62 1/3 innings. Despite the blown save, the right-hander will still be in the mix for saves along with Jorge Alcala and recently acquired Emilio Pagan.

Thu Sep 9 202111:13Tyler Duffey Records Third Save
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Tyler Duffey notched his third save of the season in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Indians. With Alex Colome unavailable, Duffey worked the ninth, firing 12 of 17 pitches for strikes while recording a pair of punchouts. The right-hander had his curveball working well, as it accounted for all five of his whiffs. Duffey has been plagued by control issues at times this season, though he has managed to get the walks under control lately, posting a superb 15:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 11 innings pitched since the start of August. With four holds and a save in that span, Duffey may be helpful to fantasy managers in need of help at the reliever spot down the stretch.

Sat Aug 7 202100:30Tyler Duffey Strikes Out Two For Second Straight Outing
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Tyler Duffey put together an effective outing once again in Friday's 5-4 win over the Astros. Duffey worked the seventh inning, allowing two hits but striking out a pair for his second straight scoreless appearance. The right-hander has had about as inconsistent a season as possible, seemingly pitching well every other month, though August certainly seems to be treating him well so far. Duffey's strikeout rate has dipped to 20.2 percent after he posted rates above 33 percent each of the last two seasons, perhaps one of the main reasons consistency has evaded him.

Sat Jul 31 202102:55Joey Votto homers for 7th straight game, 1 shy of MLB record
NEW YORK (AP) — Joey Votto homered for the seventh straight game, one shy of a major league record, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 6-2 on Friday night. Jonathan India went deep twice for the Reds, including a leadoff shot that came on Carlos Carrasco’s first pitch with the Mets. Acquired from Cleveland in January, the veteran right-hander finally made his New York debut after recovering from a hamstring injury. It was an up-and-down day for the Mets, who made a big deal to get Javier Báez from the Chicago Cubs before baseball’s trade deadline — and then revealed injured ace Jacob deGrom will be shut down for two more weeks because of inflammation in his pitching elbow, making it unlikely he’ll rejoin the NL East leaders before September. Báez was acquired from the Cubs along with right-hander Trevor Williams for outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Mets’ first-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft. Báez is expected to join the Mets on Saturday and will play shortstop... [More]

Sun Jul 11 202121:29Altuve's 3-run homer in 9th caps Astros' rally past Yankees
HOUSTON (AP) — Jose Altuve hit a three-run homer to cap a startling six-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning, getting his jersey yanked off in a frenzied celebration and lifting the Houston Astros over the New York Yankees 8-7 on Sunday. The Astros had been shut out by the Yankees the previous two games, highlighted by ace Gerrit Cole’s three-hitter in a 4-0 win on Saturday night. The win came on Altuve replica jersey giveaway at Minute Maid Park — Houston fans left with a No. 27 shirt, while the All-Star second baseman exited without his. New York led 7-2 after a three-run homer by Gary Sanchez in the eighth inning. After the first two Astros reached base against Domingo Germán in the ninth, Chas McCormick hit a two-run double off Chad Green (3-5). Abraham Toro followed with an RBI double to make it 7-5, still with no outs. Pinch-hitter Jason Castro singled and one out later, Altuve launched his soaring shot to left field. Ralph Garza Jr. (1-2) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for... [More]
Fri Jul 9 202101:29Rookie pitcher hits slam off Scherzer, Padres overtake Nats
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Rookie reliever Daniel Camarena hit a stunning grand slam off Washington ace Max Scherzer and the San Diego Padres overcame an eight-run deficit, finally beating the Nationals 9-8 Thursday night on Trent Grisham’s RBI single in the ninth inning. The Padres matched the biggest comeback in franchise history, helped by Fernando Tatis’ 28th home run and Grisham’s two-out hit. But it was Camarena’s blow that really jolted the crowd at Petco Park. Camarena, who went to San Diego’s Cathedral Catholic High, was called up earlier in the day for his second stint with the Padres. He replaced Yu Darvish starting the fourth inning and allowed Trea Turner’s second homer of the game, a two-run drive that gave the Nationals an 8-0 lead. With the Padres’ bullpen taxed in recent days, manager Jayce Tingler had Camarena bat for himself against the struggling Scherzer with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth. The left-hander drove a 1-2 fastball into the right-field stands to send... [More]
