Wed Apr 2408:10Ben Lively Throws Another Gem
Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Ben Lively put together a strong outing against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday. It was his second outing of the season and both have come against the Red Sox. On Tuesday, Lively tossed 6 1/3 innings and allowed five hits, one run, zero walks and struck out seven on the evening. The 32-year-old has now allowed just three runs with 14 strikeouts and one walk over 11 1/3 innings. The Guardians always seem to have a pitcher factory churning and Lively could be the latest diamond in the rough for the franchise. It is still very early and both his starts have come against a injury plagued Red Sox lineup, but if Lively can toss another gem against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, he will be worth rostering in most formats.

Wed Apr 1715:05Ben Lively To Make Season Debut Wednesday
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Ben Lively (illness) has been reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday's contest in Boston against the Red Sox. The Guardians signed the 32-year-old to a one-year contract this winter after he made his big-league return with the Reds in 2023. Lively spent three seasons in the KBO before returning to North America for the 2022 season but stayed at Triple-A with the Reds that year. He worked to a 5.38 ERA across 19 outings (12 starts) for the Reds last season and has made a pair of starts with Triple-A Columbus this season, posting a 3.24 ERA across 8 1/3 innings of work.

Tue Dec 12 202313:02Guardians Sign Ben Lively
The Cleveland Guardians signed free-agent right-hander Ben Lively to a one-year, $750,000 on Tuesday. Lively probably isn't going to be a starting rotation option to open the 2024 season in Cleveland, but he could be if the Guardians trade right-hander Shane Bieber this winter. The 31-year-old Lively returned to the big leagues in 2023 with the Cincinnati Reds for the first time since 2019, when he pitched for the Kansas City Royals. In 19 outings (12 starts) this past season for Cincinnati, he went 4-7 with a 5.38 ERA (5.35 FIP) and 1.36 WHIP with 25 walks and 79 strikeouts in 88 2/3 innings pitched. Lively will most likely end up being a swing man for the cost-cutting Guardians next season and off the fantasy radar in the majority of leagues.

Wed Oct 18 202322:39Ben Lively Outrighted To Triple-A
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Ben Lively cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. If Lively declines his assignment to the minors, he will become a free agent. The 31-year-old made his first appearance in the majors in 2023 since pitching just one inning with the Kansas City Royals in 2019. He wasn't all that affective, going 4-7 with a 5.38 ERA (5.35 FIP), 1.36 WHIP, 25 walks and a career-high 79 strikeouts in 88 2/3 innings over 19 appearances (12 starts) for the Reds. If he hits the free-agent market, he'll likely have to settle for a minor-league deal with another club this winter.

Fri Sep 1 202320:29Ben Lively Placed On COVID Injured List
The Cincinnati Reds placed right-handers Ben Lively (illness) and Fernando Cruz (illness) on the COVID injured list on Friday and recalled right-hander Lyon Richardson from Triple-A Louisville and activated reliever Tejay Antone (elbow) from the 60-day injured list in corresponding moves. Richardson made the start for Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs on Friday. In addition to Lively and Cruz, the Reds placed right-hander Hunter Greene on the COVID IL earlier in the day on Friday, leaving Cincinnati short-handed in a crucial weekend series against the Cubbies. Lively was originally scheduled to start Game 2 of Friday's doubleheader, but now he'll be sidelined for at least a week.

Thu Aug 3 202312:30Ben Lively Goes Back On Injured List
The Cincinnati Reds placed right-hander Ben Lively (pectoral) on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with a right-pectoral strain and recalled right-hander Daniel Duarte from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move. It's the second time that Lively will go to the IL with the same injury, and the move came a day after he allowed a career-high 13 earned runs and 13 hits in Tuesday's 20-9 trouncing by the Chicago Cubs. The 31-year-old was also out from June 24 to July 8 with a pectoral injury, so he could miss more than the 15 days on the injured list. In his first action in the big leagues since 2019, Lively has gone 4-7 in 2023 with a 5.20 ERA (5.51 FIP), 1.35 WHIP and 64 strikeouts in 71 innings over 14 appearances (12 starts) for Cincy.

Sun Jul 16 202316:24Ben Lively Leaves Sunday's Start
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Ben Lively (undisclosed) exited Sunday's start against the Milwaukee Brewers. He lasted four innings, surrendering three hits and a run while striking out three batters. Unfortunately, he was pulled after apparently "tweaking" something, although no further information was disclosed. The 31-year-old recently returned from time on the shelf because of a pectoral injury. But Lively didn't want to leave the game, so that's a good sign.

Sat Jul 8 202322:25Ben Lively Will Start Sunday Versus The Brewers
Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Ben Lively (pectoral) will start Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. He is expected to be reinstated from the injured list before Sunday's start against the Milwaukee Brewers and will go without a rehab assignment. The 31-year-old owns a (4-4) record with a 4.11 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a 45: 13 K: BB across 46 innings in 2023. Lively will match up against Milwaukee's left-hander Wade Miley. It's been 17 days since Lively's last start; he likely won't be on a pitch count. Fantasy managers should see how Lively performs on Sunday before inserting him into their starting lineups.

Fri Jun 30 202316:22Ben Lively Could Return Before All-Star Break
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Ben Lively (pectoral) could be back with the team to start a game before the All-Star break. Lively is dealing with a minor right-pectoral strain that landed him on the injured list last Saturday, and he appears to be progressing nicely. The 31-year-old made his return to the big leagues this year for the first time since 2019 with the Kansas City Royals, and he's gone 4-4 with a 4.11 ERA (5.12 FIP), 1.26 WHIP, 13 walks and 45 strikeouts in 46 innings covering nine appearances (seven starts) for the Reds. Lively will be eligible to return from the injured list on July 6. He has pitched much better than anyone expected in his return to the majors, but he may not have a spot in the rotation in the second half of the season once the Reds get some of their injured pitchers back.

Sat Jun 24 202315:20Ben Lively Placed On 15-Day Injured List
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Ben Lively (pectoral) was already slated to miss Sunday's start against the Atlanta Braves. However, the team announced on Saturday that the 31-year-old is going on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 21, because of a right pectoral muscle strain. Lively has gone 4-4 in seven starts this season, amassing a 4.11 ERA with 45 strikeouts, so he's worth holding on to for those in deeper setups.

Sat Jun 24 202313:54Ben Lively Scratched From Sunday's Start
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Ben Lively (pectoral) has been scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday against the Atlanta Braves with pectoral soreness. As of now, the Reds have not named a replacement starter so it could be a bullpen game. The team should provide an update on his timetable at the conclusion of Saturday's game but he should be considered day-to-day for now. Lively has registered a 4.11 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 45:13 K/BB ratio over 46 innings (nine appearances, seven starts) on the season.
