Mon Feb 1918:56Jorge Mateo Becoming More Versatile
Baltimore Orioles general manager Mike Elias said earlier this month that infielder Jorge Mateo would get a good bit of time in center field this spring, and manager Brandon Hyde noted on Monday that Mateo also worked at second base over the winter. "We're going to keep our options open with him. He really increases the versatility we have on this club," Hyde said. The Orioles are planning for the eventual debut of top prospect Jackson Holliday, who actually has a chance to make the Opening Day roster out of spring training. The 28-year-old Mateo has seen most of his playing time at shortstop in his time with the O's, but he may need to find his footing elsewhere on the diamond to stay in their lineup. Mateo's bat doesn't do fantasy managers any favors, but he's useful for his speed (67 steals in the last two years) in deeper fantasy leagues.

Tue Oct 10 202316:24Aaron Hicks, Jorge Mateo Taking A Seat For Game 3 Tuesday
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Aaron Hicks and shortstop Jorge Mateo will both be on the bench to start Tuesday's ALDS Game 3 versus the Texas Rangers. The switch-hitting Hicks and righty-swinging Mateo got the start in Game 2 versus left-hander Jordan Montgomery but will retreat to the bench with right-hander Nathan Eovaldi toeing the rubber for Texas on Tuesday. Hicks notched a two-run single the first inning in Sunday's Game 2 before clubbing a three-run homer in the ninth while Mateo had quite the game himself, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI, and a run scored despite the Orioles going down 11-8. Anthony Santander will take over for Hicks in right field while Gunnar Henderson returns to shortstop in place of Mateo on Tuesday.

Sun Aug 20 202319:57Jorge Mateo Hits Inside-The-Park Homer
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo showed off his speed during Sunday's game against the Oakland Athletics. The 28-year-old has struggled at the plate this month, but was able to do some damage here. Mateo went 2-for-5, including an inside-the-park home run in the 12-1 victory over the A's. This marked Mateo's first home run since April 30, which snapped a 73-game home run drought. Mateo has started three of the last four games, but that is likely due to the fact left-handers have been on the mound for the opposing teams. Honestly, Mateo doesn't have much fantasy value right now outside of his speed.

Thu May 18 202312:33Jorge Mateo Back In Lineup Thursday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo (leg) is back at shortstop and is hitting seventh in the batting order on Thursday against left-hander Tyler Anderson and the Los Angeles Angels. Mateo was dealing with some leg soreness and didn't play on Wednesday, but he's back in there a day later. The 27-year-old Dominican has cooled off some after a blistering start to his 2023 campaign, and he's now hitting .261 (30-for-115) with six doubles, six home runs, 22 RBI, 13 stolen bases and 25 runs scored in 130 plate appearances and 36 games. He has really cooled off in May, going just 5-for-43 (.116) with a double, no homers, five RBI, three steals and 14 strikeouts in 13 games.

Tue May 16 202321:55Jorge Mateo Drives In Two Runs In Win
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo went 1-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored, and two strikeouts in a 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. Mateo picked up his RBI via a single and a sacrifice fly in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively. After a scorching hot start to the season, the 27-year-old shortstop has predictably screeched to a halt. He's slashing a meager .137/.167/.216 over the last 15 contests and hasn't gone deep since April 30. Overall, Mateo owns a .261/.307/.470 batting line to go along with six home runs, 22 RBI, and 13 steals across 115 at-bats. The steals give him some value but his profile is tough to roster outside of deeper mixed and AL-only leagues.

Fri May 5 202316:09Jorge Mateo Hitting Leadoff, Austin Hays Still Out Friday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo is batting leadoff on Friday against left-hander Max Fried and the Atlanta Braves, while outfielder Austin Hays (finger) misses another contest. Mateo will be hitting in the top spot in Baltimore's order for the first time this year, but he's certainly earned it by hitting .321 (27-for-84) with five doubles, six home runs, 19 RBI, 11 stolen bases and 23 runs scored in 26 games played so far. It's a tough matchup against Fried, but Mateo will carry considerably more DFS upside out of the leadoff spot. Hays is typically the O's leadoff hitter, but he hasn't played since Tuesday with a bruised right middle finger. He'll be available off the bench, so consider him day-to-day. Ryan McKenna is starting in left field and hitting eighth in the lineup.

Sat Apr 29 202318:54Jorge Mateo Goes Deep Saturday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo hit his fifth home run of the season on Saturday. He went 1-for-3 with a walk, three RBI, and a run scored. Mateo hit fifth in the lineup for the first time this season and made it count. He's been batting mostly eighth or ninth, with a few games sprinkled in at the sixth and seventh holes, so fifth was the highest he's been all season. Mateo has really been excelling at the bottom of the lineup, and if he continues to hit; this move, if permanent, should theoretically help out some of his counting stats.

Wed Apr 26 202312:31Jorge Mateo Getting Day Off Wednesday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo is taking a routine day off during a matinee contest on Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox. Mateo recently missed some time with a hip injury, although he's moved past the issue now and is just getting a breather in a day game. The 27-year-old Dominican has been lights-out in the early going for the O's and fantasy managers alike, slashing .351/.400/.649 with a 1.049 OPS, five doubles, four home runs, 13 RBI, eight stolen bases and 17 runs scored in 19 games played. Keep rolling him out there in fantasy lineups when he's on the field and swinging a hot bat. Gunnar Henderson is handling shortstop and hitting fifth, while Ramon Urias is at third base and batting eighth on Wednesday against Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck.

Sat Apr 22 202318:28Jorge Mateo Scratched From Lineup
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo (hip) had been set to return to the lineup on Saturday but was scratched because of wet conditions on the field. This will be the second game he misses, but it's a good sign he was in the original lineup and it sounds like manager Brandon Hyde is just being cautious with his shortstop. Mateo has been surprisingly good for fantasy managers this season after mostly struggling to hit big-league pitching during his career.

Fri Apr 21 202316:00Jorge Mateo Available Off The Bench Friday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo (hip) said he is available to play off the bench on Friday against the Detroit Tigers, and he should be 100 percent healthy by Saturday. Mateo is dealing with a minor hip injury and should be back in the starting lineup on Saturday for his fantasy managers. The 27-year-old has been excellent for the O's and fantasy managers alike early on this year, slashing .362/.418/.638 with a 1.056 OPS, four doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI, eight stolen bases and 13 runs scored in 16 games. Don't expect things to be this great all year, but Mateo is rolling to begin the season and needs to be rostered everywhere. Gunnar Henderson is at short and is hitting seventh, while Ramon Urias is at third and batting eighth on Friday against Tigers right-hander Michael Lorenzen.

Wed Apr 19 202322:50Jorge Mateo Day-To-Day With Hip Discomfort
Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that shortstop Jorge Mateo (hip) is day-to-day with right hip discomfort after he was pulled from Wednesday's game early against the Washington Nationals. The Orioles have a well-time day off on Thursday, so there's a chance that Mateo could be back in the lineup for the team's next contest on Friday. As of now, it sounds as though the 27-year-old should avoid a trip to the injured list, which is good news for his fantasy managers. Before leaving early on Wednesday, he went 0-for-1. Mateo was replaced at the 6 by Gunnar Henderson. Entering the game against the Nats, Mateo had been excellent for the O's with a .370 average (17-for-46) with four doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI, eight stolen bases and 13 runs scored in 15 games played.

Sun Apr 9 202311:23Jorge Mateo Returns To Lineup
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo (ankle) is back in the starting lineup on Sunday against the New York Yankees and left-hander Nestor Cortes. Mateo is playing shortstop and hitting seventh, while Gunnar Henderson is at third base and batting eighth in the lineup. The 27-year-old Mateo was held out of Saturday's lineup due to a sore ankle, but he'll return for the series finale. He's been great for the O's and fantasy managers through his first six games, hitting .350 (7-for-20) with two home runs, five RBI, seven runs scored and five stolen bases in 24 plate appearances. Mateo is a solid source of steals in deep-mixed leagues as long as he's playing regularly. Henderson, meanwhile, has been slow out of the gates with four hits in 24 at-bats, a home run and two RBI.

Sat Apr 8 202316:47Jorge Mateo To Miss Saturday's Game
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo (ankle) is being held out of Saturday's game against the New York Yankees. The 27-year-old has been dealing with a lingering ankle issue, but continues to get treatment for it. Right now, it doesn't sound like Mateo is going to need a trip to the injured list. This appears to be a routine rest day, so he should be back for their next game. Gunnar Henderson will cover shortstop and bat fifth against right-hander Johny Brito on Saturday.

Mon Apr 3 202316:45Jorge Mateo Returning On Monday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo (finger) is back in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Texas Rangers. He missed Sunday's game after suffering a cut on his finger during Saturday's contest. It sounds like this was only a minor issue and Mateo shouldn't be impacted by this going forward. He only has four stolen bases and two RBI through two games this season. He'll bat eighth and play shortstop against righty Jon Gray on Monday.

Sun Apr 2 202319:35Jorge Mateo Held Out Of Sunday's Game
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo (finger) was held out of Sunday's game against the Boston Red Sox. The 27-year-old suffered a cut on his finger while sliding into third base during Saturday's game. Mateo was able to finish out that game, but the team decided to play it safe on Sunday. At the moment, Mateo is considered day-to-day with a minor finger injury. Fantasy managers should tough it out with Mateo considering he's already got a league-leading four stolen bases this season. He should be back in the lineup within the next few days.

Tue Dec 20 202200:44Jorge Mateo Could Be Trade Target
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported Monday that the Baltimore Orioles have been receiving inquiries on shortstop Jorge Mateo. The big four free-agent shortstops have all been signed, but there are a number of teams still looking to fill the position. Mateo offers strong defense and speed, and he slashed .221/.267/.379 with 13 home runs, 50 RBI, and 35 stolen bases in 533 plate appearances in 2022. While he is an elite fantasy option for steals, Mateo's career .225 average and .344 slugging percentage limit his overall fantasy value, particularly in points leagues.

Wed Sep 21 202214:35Jorge Mateo Isn't In Wednesday's Lineup
Baltimore Orioles infielder Jorge Mateo isn't in the team's lineup on Wednesday for a matchup with the Detroit Tigers and right-hander Matt Manning. Mateo is batting .220 with a .267 on-base percentage, 13 home runs, and 30 stolen bases in 484 plate appearances this season. Instead, it'll be Gunnar Henderson moving to shortstop with Ramon Urias sliding over to third base and Terrin Vavra entering the lineup at second base. Vavra is batting .271 with a .348 on-base percentage in 69 plate appearances in the Majors for the Orioles this season. He'll hit fifth on Wednesday. Fantasy managers in search of streaming options are probably better off looking elsewhere given the matchup with Manning.

Fri Sep 9 202214:45Jorge Mateo Out Of The Lineup Friday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo is not in the starting lineup on Friday against the Boston Red Sox. Mateo appears to just be getting a regular day of rest on Friday. Fantasy managers need to act accordingly. The 27-year-old is hitting .226/.275/.394 with 12 home runs, 45 RBI, 55 runs scored and 30 stolen bases in his 421 at-bats for the O's this season. Shortstop prospect Gunnar Henderson is starting at the 6 instead and will bat fifth against Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello. Henderson is the No. 2 prospect in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline, and he's gone 9-for-33 (.273) with a homer, two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base in his first nine big-league games. There's plenty of upside to be had with Henderson as a DFS play.

Sun Aug 21 202223:38Jorge Mateo Drives In Three Sunday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo came through with the game-winning hit in Sunday's 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, clearing the bases with a double to put the team up for good. Mateo also singled in four at-bats. Mateo is most fantasy-relevant for his contributions on the bases, stealing 27 bases this season, but he has been red-hot at the dish of late, slashing .321/.357/.594 with five homers in his last 30 games. Mateo is well worth an add if he's somehow still available on waiver wires.

Wed Aug 3 202221:22Jorge Mateo Swipes His 26th Bag Wednesday
Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo was 0-for-3 during Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Texas Rangers, but walked, scored a run, and stole a base. It was his 26th steal of the season, which is second in all of baseball and leads the American League. However, the rest of Mateo's numbers are hard to swallow as he owns a .216/.264/.389 slash line with 10 HRs, 32 RBI, and 41 runs. The 27-year-old can be used for his stolen base production in deeper formats but might hurt the other categories too much in standard leagues.
