Mon May 20 201914:40Braves acquire Swarzak from Seattle for Vizcaino, Biddle
ATLANTA (AP) — The Braves have added veteran help for their patchwork bullpen by acquiring right-hander Anthony Swarzak from Seattle for left-hander Jesse Biddle and right-hander Arodys Vizcaino. As part of Monday's trade, Seattle is sending Atlanta $1,788,172 to cover about one-third of the $5,677,419 remaining in Swarzak's $8 million salary this year.Vizcaino opened the season as Atlanta's closer, then had season-ending surgery on his right shoulder on April 17. His replacement, A.J. Minter, struggled and was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on May 10.The 27-year-old Biddle was designated for assignment by the Braves on Wednesday after walking 10 batters in 11 2/3 innings. He had a 5.40 ERA as he failed to repeat his success from 2018, when he was 6-1 with a 3.11 ERA. He will report to the Mariners.Luke Jackson has six saves in nine chances as the Braves' latest closer. The 33-year-old Swarzak has a 5.27 ERA and three saves in six chances this season for the Mariners. He had an 8.64 ERA in his last nine appearances. Swarzak was successful in four of five saves chances and had a 6.15 ERA with the Mets in 2018.Swarzak was acquired by Seattle on Dec. 8 along with outfielder Jay Bruce, right fielder Gerson Bautista and a pair of minor leaguers for second baseman Robinson Canó and All-Star closer Edwin Diaz.___For more AP baseball coverage: https://apnews.com/apf-Baseball and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sun Mar 10 201919:30King Felix upset by opening day decision, but not surprised
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Felix Hernandez doesn't think he could have changed the mind of Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais about opening day, even by pitching well this spring. With his ERA approaching 16, it's a moot point.King Felix is royally agitated anyway.Hernandez was tagged for seven runs in three-plus innings against the Cleveland Indians on Sunday, raising his spring ERA to 15.95 a day after Servais announced that Marco Gonzales would start Seattle's season opener against Oakland in Tokyo on March 20.Seattle's decision ends Hernandez's run of 10 consecutive opening day starts. That was the longest active streak in the majors and tied for the fourth longest ever — Jack Morris set the mark at 14. Erik Bedard was the last starter before Hernandez to open a season on the mound for the Mariners.Hernandez spoke publicly after the game for the first time since Servais' announcement. Asked if he was upset, Hernandez said simply, "Yeah," but declined to elaborate on his emotions."I knew... [More]
Thu Feb 28 201916:57Veterans know they might not stay long with Mariners
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Jay Bruce and Edwin Encarnacion are still productive major leaguers with the potential for big seasons.Encarnacion had 32 home runs and 107 RBIs a season ago with Cleveland. Bruce hit 29 homers two seasons ago with the New York Mets. So they could play an important role in any success the Seattle Mariners have in 2019.They just don't fit perfectly into the Mariners' long-term plans to build for the future. It leaves them in the odd circumstance of knowing they are trying to help Seattle be successful and mentoring the next wave of young prospects, while at the same time essentially auditioning for teams that could be looking to add some offensive punch by the time midseason rolls around."I don't worry about any of that stuff. I don't trade myself. I create trade interest in myself by playing well. I help the team by playing well," Bruce said. "I set an example for the young players based on my actions. I try not to be real preachy about the way I go about my business.... [More]
Mon Feb 11 201916:36Mariners arrive early to begin preparing for opener in Japan
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — If nothing else, the Seattle Mariners' early arrival for spring training will give them a little more meet-and-greet time. The Mariners have 20 new players, including seven projected new starters, on their training camp roster this spring after an offseason overhaul following an 89-victory 2018 that still left them eight games out of the playoffs."I've been studying mugs of these guys to get a feeling. It's going to be a little bit different camp with all the new people," manager Scott Servais said Monday. "A lot of educating to do. Name tags would be good. Mandatory wear your jersey out there with the name on the back."The most notable new face is left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, who is expected to start one of the two games the Mariners will play in his native Japan. Seattle reported to spring training a day earlier than most to prepare for the season-opening series against Oakland in Tokyo on March 20-21.Kikuchi, who signed a four-year, $56 million contract in the offseason,... Tue Dec 11 201822:01Callaway says it's OK for Cano not to run out grounders
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Half a loaf is better than none for New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway when it comes to Robinson Cano.New York's new second baseman has been criticized at times for not running hard to first base when he hits infield grounders. Callaway says the 36-year-old is just protecting his body in a way that makes sense."I think Robbie deserves the leeway on that," Callaway said Tuesday at the winter meetings. "And the reason is not because he got out, he's frustrated, that's not the reason he does that. He does it so he can play 155 games, which he's done every year. He's smart. He knows the game. You're not going to see him hit a ball and loaf when there's a chance for it to be a hit. He understands when that ball leaves that fielder's hand, destiny is going to happen. And so he knows how to do that part of it."Cano will hit third in the lineup, Callaway said.An eight-time All-Star, Cano was obtained from the Seattle Mariners on Dec. 3 along with relief pitcher Edwin Diaz for... Mon Dec 3 201821:47Mariners set sights on 2021 by dealing Cano, Diaz and Segura
SEATTLE (AP) — Mariners fans have waited longer than any supporters in North America for a return to the postseason.General manager Jerry Dipoto is asking Seattle to wait a little bit more.Dipoto continued a whirlwind reshaping of the Mariners' roster Monday by sending Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz to the Mets and Jean Segura, James Pazos and Juan Nicasio to Philadelphia. In exchange, Seattle received a bundle of prospects and freed up significant salary space for after the 2020 season."This is what a reset looks like," Dipoto said.Dipoto believes the flurry of moves he's made in the past few weeks can get the Mariners into contention by 2021, calling the strategy a "step back" rather than a rebuild, even though it could take longer than a couple of seasons for Seattle to return to relevancy. The Mariners have been the busiest team in baseball, making wholesale changes to begin the offseason. Salary and experience are being swapped for youth and hope, with an eye on opening a competitive... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Aiming for an instant upgrade after two failing seasons, the New York Mets and their rookie general manager turned to a most familiar face. The Mets made a splash — that much was certain — when they acquired eight-time All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano and major league saves leader Edwin Diaz from the Seattle Mariners in a seven-player trade Monday. In his first big move as Mets GM, Brodie Van Wagenen brought the 36-year-old Cano back to New York. Van Wagenen previously was an agent and represented the former Yankees slugger. The rebuilding Mariners also sent $20 million to the Mets for outfielder Jay Bruce, reliever Anthony Swarzak and three prospects: former first-round draft picks Justin Dunn and Jarred Kelenic, plus right-hander Gerson Bautista.Mets fans were strongly split on the deal. Some applauded the trade as a chance for a team three years removed from the World Series to quickly head back in that direction. Wed May 30 201820:46Callaway: Mets have 'hit rock bottom,' looking for way out
ATLANTA (AP) — The New York Mets have been reeling, and first-year manager Mickey Callaway is looking for a way out.Almost nothing has gone right since New York won its fourth straight game on May 21. It began Wednesday's game against the Atlanta Braves having lost seven of nine and in danger of falling under .500 for the first time this season."We've hit rock bottom the last few days and we have to come out of it," Callaway said. The bullpen is 1-5 with an 8.51 ERA in its last six games. New York has 11 players on the disabled list, including sluggers Yoenis Cespedes and Todd Frazier, reliever Anthony Swarzak and catcher Travis d'Arnaud. The Mets believe they dodged a couple of major injuries Tuesday when ace Noah Syndergaard was placed on the DL with a strained ligament in his right index finger and Steven Matz left his start in the fourth inning with a mild strain in his left middle finger. But so much has gone wrong that Callaway is wondering what might happen next. Tue May 29 201823:25Mets put Syndergaard on DL, Matz also injures finger
ATLANTA (AP) — On another day of injuries in another season filled with them, the New York Mets were trying to put their finger on the latest problem.A pair of finger injuries sent Noah Syndergaard to the disabled list and knocked Steven Matz out of his start against the Atlanta Braves after just three innings Tuesday.Syndergaard was placed on the 10-day DL before the game with a sore right index finger, though the Mets are hopeful the right-hander will only miss one start. Then, in an almost surreal development for the injury-plagued team, Matz exited with discomfort in the middle finger of his left hand. Leading 4-0, he went out to warm up for the fourth inning but suddenly stopped throwing and began looking at his pitching hand.New York manager Mickey Callaway and a trainer popped out of the dugout to examine Matz. The pitcher flexed the finger a bit before heading slowly to the dugout, his night over after just 42 pitches. He allowed only one hit, walked two and struck out two.Three... [More]

ATLANTA (AP) — The New York Mets have placed right-hander A.J. Ramos and infielder Wilmer Flores on the 10-day disabled list and activated right-hander Hansel Robles and catcher Kevin Plawecki from rehab assignments.Heading into a doubleheader with the Atlanta Braves, the Mets added infielder Phillips Evans from Triple-A Las Vegas and brought in right-hander Gerson Bautista as Monday's 26th man.Ramos, sidelined with a right shoulder strain, and Flores, out with lower back soreness, have returned to New York for further evaluation.Ramos has allowed eight runs in his last 4 2/3 innings. Flores is hitting .248 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 46 games.Robles has been on the DL with a right knee sprain since May 9. Plawecki returned from a left hand fracture and has been out since April 12.Manager Mickey Callaway said starter Jason Vargas has volunteered to pitch in relief if needed in the doubleheader. Vargas, 1-3 with a 10.62 ERA in five starts, would use an outing as his side session and make his next scheduled start."It'd probably be more like an emergency only if we go extra innings or something, or if we run out of pitching for whatever reason," Callaway said. The Mets cleared room for Bautista by optioning catcher Tomas Nido to Double-A Binghamton.___More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball
