The Broncos released Casey on Saturday, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports.

Casey was active for three games this year but did not record any statistics. He was removed from the roster to open up a spot for Derek Wolfe, who is returning from a suspension.

Casey agreed to a one-year deal with the Broncos on Saturday.

Casey was a disappointing and not particularly cheap free agent bust in Philadelphia, but the former Rice star has a lot of versatility both on offense and special teams, and he should provide cheap utility behind Owen Daniels and Virgil Green.

The move leaves the Eagles with Brent Celek, Zach Ertz and Trey Burton at the tight end position for now, while Casey -- who caught just three passes for 59 yards and two TDs this past season -- will now look to catch on elsewhere as a depth TE.

Casey only played 14 percent of Philly's 2013 offensive snaps, while Brent Celek handled 77 and Zach Ertz 41. Casey's role as a blocker did expand some down the stretch, but his price tag is awfully high for a theoretical third stringer. The Eagles may ask Casey to accept a sizable pay cut, or release him outright.

With Kevin Walter unable to make plays opposite Andre Johnson, the Texans are using two-tight end sets as their base. It's resulted in 28 catches for Casey on the season, but there's no reason for owners to make an add. He's behind Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels on a team that will be running much more than throwing most weeks.
