Allen won't return to Monday's game against the Steelers due to a left ankle injury, Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Allen sustained the ailment in the first quarter, but not before recording two solo tackles to bring his season-long line to 31 tackles (26 solo), one interception, and one sack. In his stead, Robert Golden took over at strong safety.

Allen recorded seven tackles (four solo) and an interception in Pittsburgh's 12-6 win over St. Louis Sunday.

The interception was the first of the season for the Steelers, and the first for Allen since 2013. Pittsburgh will face Joe Flacco, who has thrown one or more interceptions in each of Baltimore's first three games this season, in Week 4 on Thursday.

Assuming no setbacks, it looks safe to roll with Allen this weekend, on the heels of a Week 1 effort in which he recorded eight tackles and a sack against the Patriots.

That's good news for Allen, who was being evaluated for a concussion after last Thursday's game against the Patriots. If everything stays the same, he should be in line to get the start against the dynamic 49ers' rushing attack this Sunday.

The sack was a career first for the 12-year veteran, who was being evaluated for a concussion after the game.

Previously expected to fill a depth role, the 33-year-old Allen has been thrust into a starting job, as the Steelers were displeased with Shamarko Thomas' performance during training camp and the preseason. Allen's never been a strong IDP producer, but it's worth noting that he's spent nearly all of his career at cornerback or free safety. Of course, even with the expectation of added tackle opportunities at strong safety, it's hard to buy into a player who has only topped 50 tackles once in a 12-year career.

Allen's return to Pittsburgh comes after former teammate and safety Troy Polamalu announced his retirement this week. Although his role will likely be a reserve one, Allen provides nice veteran experience to the Steelers' secondary.

The 11-year veteran played in all 16 games and totaled 36 tackles for his best season since 2006 with the Buccaneers.

The veteran will face competition from second-year S Matt Johnson, but Johnson wasn't overly impressive in OTAs and minicamp. Barry Church has a firm grip on the strong safety spot.
