Apllewhite, a Ron Rivera favorite, is a valuable special teamer, but he sometimes works as a situational pass rusher opposite Charles Johnson. His value to the Panthers is in the locker room.

The Charlotte Observer lists Antwan Applewhite and Jordan Senn as high priority free agents for the Panthers.
Applewhite has a history with coach Ron Rivera in San Diego and can play both linebacker and defensive end. Senn finished fourth on the team with 73 tackles but is severly undersized and not likely to covet much attention on the open market.

The Panthers are desperate for linebacker help after losing both Jon Beason and Thomas Davis for the season. Applewhite flashed pass rush ability with the Chargers and can help on special teams. Head coach Ron Rivera was with San Diego as the linebackers coach/defensive coordinator from 2007-10.

49ers signed OLB Antwan Applewhite, formerly of the Chargers.
Applewhite played way more snaps than the Chargers hoped last season, though he did flash some pass-rush ability with three sacks and two forced fumbles. A May 6 DUI arrest was Applewhite's undoing in San Diego. With the 49ers, Applewhite knows DC Greg Manusky's system and can also contribute on special teams.

Applewhite certainly didn't help his case by getting popped for DUI in May. He'll be on the hunt for a special teams role elsewhere.

Chargers OLB Antwan Applewhite will plead not guilty next week to drunken driving stemming from his May 6 arrest.
"The plan is to plead not guilty and take a look at what kind of evidence there is," Applewhite's attorney said. "I understand the officer was impressed with how cooperative Antwan was." Applewhite may lose his roster spot on the Chargers if he's convicted. He received a restricted tender in February.

The Chargers plan to keep Antwan Applewhite at outside linebacker in 2011.
A college defensive end, Applewhite has been shuttled inside and out in his three-year career. The Chargers gave Applewhite a second-round tender as a restricted free agent, and he'll be back to play in a rotation outside. The 25-year-old racked up 48 tackles, three sacks, and two forced fumbles in 2011.
