Tue Sep 24 201317:21Vaughn Martin banished to injured reserve
Dolphins placed DT Vaughn Martin on injured reserve, ending his season.
The move clears a roster spot for Marvin Austin. Martin's "injury" isn't immediately apparent. Thrust into action by injuries along the Dolphins' defensive line, Martin struggled in 25 snaps against the Falcons on Sunday. It's an admission of failure from GM Jeff Ireland, who handed Martin a two-year, $4 million contract in March that included $750,000 guaranteed. It's not a huge sum of wasted money in and of itself, but dead dollars add up fast in the NFL.

Dolphins signed DT Vaughn Martin, formerly of the Chargers.
Martin, 27, graded out as Pro Football Focus' 33rd-rated 3-4 defensive end last year, among just 34 qualifiers. (That's second to last.) PFF considered him poor in run defense and pass rush, and Martin also committed four penalties in under 500 defensive snaps. In Miami, Martin will battle Chase Alecxih and Kheeston Randall to be the top backup behind Randy Starks and Paul Soliai.

Tue Mar 26 201317:26Vaughn Martin visits Dolphins Tuesday
Free agent DE Vaughn Martin visited the Dolphins on Tuesday.
It's Martin's first known visit of free agency, though he's supposedly also drawing interest from Eagles, Lions, Saints and Patriots. That's in addition to the Chargers, who hope to re-sign him. A run-stopper, Martin made 27 starts for the Bolts the past two seasons. He'd be depth for the Dolphins, who are set along their defensive line.

Fri Mar 22 201308:14Vaughn Martin drawing interest from 5 teams
CBS Sports reports the Chargers are "hoping to retain" free agent DE Vaughn Martin, but are facing competition from the Eagles, Lions, Saints and Patriots.
It's Martin's first mention of free agency, though he did have talks with the Chargers early last week. There's always a strong chance it's agent-driven when a player is connected to 4-5 teams at once, but it is time for bargain-hunting clubs to begin getting more active. Martin has combined for 27 starts the past two seasons, but made just two sacks. He's a run stopper.

Tue Mar 12 201300:06Chargers open contract talks with Martin
The Chargers have opened contract talks with free agent DE Vaughn Martin.
Martin graded out very poorly as both a run stopper and pass rusher in Pro Football Focus' 2012 ratings. The Chargers did keep defensive coordinator John Pagano in place under new head coach Mike McCoy, so Martin has scheme familiarity. A 26-year-old out of Western Ontario, keeping Martin should be cheap.

Sat Jul 21 201211:09Vaughn Martin to start at left end for Bolts
Vaughn Martin is expected to remain the Chargers' starting left end this season.
Last year's first-rounder Corey Liuget will start on the right side, and likely kick inside to rush the quarterback from the interior on nickel downs. Martin started 15 games in 2011, operating as an early-down run stuffer who came off the field on thirds. He could lose playing time to newly anointed "floater" Antonio Garay, as well as second-round pick Kendall Reyes.
