Fri Feb 21 201410:00Lions won't re-sign K David Akers
Lions GM Martin Mayhew said the team won't re-sign free agent K David Akers.
Akers, 39, made 19-of-24 field goals in his lone season with the Lions. Coach Jim Schwartz stuck by the veteran all season. Akers is likely going to face an ice-cold market and could even retire. The Lions have kickers John Potter and Giorgio Tavecchio currently on the roster. Detroit will likely bring in more competition.

Wed Dec 4 201309:00David Akers still hanging on in Detroit
Coach Jim Schwartz gave K David Akers yet another vote of confidence Tuesday.
Akers somehow missed a 31-yarder during the Thanksgiving win over the Packers. The Lions worked out three kickers on Monday and three on Tuesday including Shayne Graham, but none of them were signed. Regardless, fantasy owners need to find someone kicking with more confidence as we head into Week 14.

Sat Nov 30 201310:13Lions still confident in David Akers
Coach Jim Schwartz gave David Akers a vote of confidence after he missed his fifth field goal attempt of the season on Thursday.
Akers, 38, is 15-of-20 on the season and has missed kicks from 31, 45, and 47 yards away, in addition to having two others blocked. The Lions plan to work out kickers this upcoming week, but we'd expect Akers to remain the guy.

Thu May 30 201317:35Akers still not 100 percent
Lions K David Akers hasn't been doing much kicking at OTAs and is not at 100 percent.
Akers had groin surgery after the Super Bowl, which he still hasn't fully recovered from. The kicker has said pushing himself following double-hernia surgery prior to last season caused him to re-aggravate the injury, which he cites as the reason for his woeful 2012. He's taking it slowly this offseason with the hope he'll return to form.

Wed Apr 3 201319:41David Akers leaves Lions visit without a deal
Free agent K David Akers left his Lions visit without a contract.
It's a sign the Lions are still hoping to re-sign Jason Hanson. Coming off a rough season in San Francisco, Akers has yet to line up any other visits.

Thu Mar 28 201313:02Lions to host David Akers
The Lions will host K David Akers for a free-agent visit next week.
Perhaps Detroit is using the Akers visit to put pressure on fellow free agent Jason Hanson, whom the Lions would much prefer to re-sign. Hanson went 32-of-36 (89 percent) on field goals last year. Akers went 29 for 42 (69 percent).

Wed Mar 6 201319:10David Akers underwent surgery, won't retire
Free agent K David Akers has "no intention" of retiring, and recently underwent a "minor surgical procedure" to correct an issue that bothered him in 2012.
Akers dealt with a vague "pelvis" injury last season, but didn't miss any games. He'll surely blame his rough year on the ailment in free agency. Akers underwent a double sports hernia operation in February 2012.

Wed Mar 6 201318:07San Francisco officially releases David Akers
49ers released K David Akers.
The Sideline View's Adam Caplan reported the move was imminent on Monday. Just one year removed from one of the greatest kicking seasons in NFL history, Akers left the 49ers no choice after shanking 13-of-42 field-goal attempts last season. He narrowly avoided a handful of other misses. Akers' r‚sum‚ is impressive enough that teams should be willing to ignore an off year, but at 38, he may not get a job until a team finds itself in a desperate situation.

Thu Feb 7 201315:29Akers as good as gone in San Francisco
CSN Bay Area expects the 49ers to move on from K David Akers.
Akers' $3 million salary would be steep even if he hadn't been utterly incompetent in 2012. As it is, he missed 13-of-42 field-goal attempts, an unacceptable number. Beat writer Matt Maiocco believes free agents Lawrence Tynes, Shayne Graham, Nick Novak and Mike Nugent are all possible replacements.

Mon Jan 21 201317:1849ers sticking with Akers for Super Bowl
The 49ers will stick with K David Akers for the Super Bowl.
Akers missed yet another kick in Sunday's NFC Championship escape - shanking it off the uprights - but will remain a man of nine lives. Akers has missed at least one field-goal attempt in seven of 10 games since the 49ers' Week 9 bye. San Francisco can only hope it doesn't have the next Scott Norwood (or Ray Finkle) on its hands.

Thu Jan 10 201317:19Akers wins competition, will kick vs. Packers
Coach Jim Harbaugh announced that David Akers will kick for the 49ers in Saturday's Divisional round game versus the Packers.
Although Billy Cundiff lost the kicking competition, he will remain on the roster as insurance. Harbaugh said Akers gives the 49ers the "best chance to win," which doesn't say much for Cundiff. Owners who poached Cundiff off the waiver wire for the fantasy playoffs are out of luck.

Mon Jan 7 201316:5349ers likely to keep both kickers for Sat.
49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said there's a "good chance" both David Akers and Billy Cundiff will be on the roster this weekend.
Harbaugh added that there is a "leader in the clubhouse," but he wouldn't name names and didn't specify if both would be active for Saturday's Divisional Round game versus the Packers. Akers and Cundiff were taking their duel to Candlestick Park on Monday afternoon. We likely won't know much more until late in the week.

Thu Jan 3 201319:10Akers had offseason double hernia surgery
David Akers (pelvis) revealed Thursday that he underwent surgery last February for a double sports hernia.
Complications from that surgery have been behind his struggles of late. Akers was shaky on the first day of his kicking competition while Billy Cundiff showed a stronger and more accurate leg. "The telling sign to me is the fact he's missing them wide left, which means he's not getting his hips through the ball," ex-49ers kicker Joe Nedney said of Akers. "He's not swinging confidently through the ball." It's premature to predict a winner here, but Cundiff appears to have the edge.

Tue Jan 1 201316:50Akers, Cundiff to compete for kicking duties
According to CSN Bay Area, newly signed Billy Cundiff will compete with David Akers in practices to determine who kicks in the playoffs.
It would be no contest if Akers was healthy. Kicking through a pelvis injury, however, he's rivaled Mason Crosby as the least reliable kicker in the league over the past two months. Until a winner is announced, the 49ers kicking situation is one to avoid in playoff fantasy leagues.

Mon Dec 31 201215:1949ers bringing in tryout kickers
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh plans to bring in kickers for tryouts this week.
David Akers remains on San Francisco's 53-man roster for now, but the Niners are understandably dissatisfied with a kicker who shanked 13 regular season field goals. The 49ers did clinch a first-round bye in the NFC, so they have two weeks to evaluate their placekicking situation before the Divisional Round.

Mon Dec 31 201213:5949ers will 'evaluate' the kicker position
When asked if the 49ers need to make a kicking change before the playoffs, head coach Jim Harbaugh said, "We'll evaluate the position."
It's the first time Harbaugh has wavered on the topic of David Akers. Throughout the season he had been adamant that the team was not looking to replace the 38-year-old. However, Akers missed from 44 and 40 yards out in Week 17 and wrapped up the regular season hitting just 29-of-42 kicks. "It's his job to make the field goals, you know," added Harbuagh. The 49ers earned a first-round bye for the playoffs, so they'll have two weeks to make a decision.

Tue Dec 18 201209:58David Akers is on thin ice in San Fran
When asked he is thinking about making a kicking change, coach Jim Harbaugh said, "No, not at this time."
It certainly wasn't a vote of confidence for David Akers, who missed a 39-yard attempt against the Patriots and is just 25-of-35 on the season. "Specialists sometimes only get four or five opportunities a game, and you've got to make the play," Harbaugh said Monday. "You've got to see him do it, got to see him make those plays." Fantasy owners should be looking for more stable options.

Mon Dec 3 201215:2949ers sticking with David Akers
The 49ers are sticking with David Akers (pelvis) at kicker.
Akers missed yet another field goal in Sunday's loss - a potential game-winning kick in overtime - but coach Jim Harbaugh believes the attempt was "well-struck." Although Akers' struggles are supposedly the result of a pelvis injury, that doesn't make his 21-of-30 field-goal success rate any more palatable. The 49ers are willing to risk Akers costing them more games, but fantasy owners shouldn't be.

Sun Dec 2 201211:51David Akers playing in Week 13
David Akers (pelvis) is active for Week 13 against the Rams.
Akers was billed as "questionable" earlier in the week, but will be kicking for the 49ers on the Edward Jones Dome's artificial turf. Akers missed two field goals in the Superdome in Week 12, however, and is just 19-of-27 on the year. One more bad game, and he might be shown the door.
