This could be it for Ball, who nearly retired last November thanks to his lengthy concussion history. His latest concussion came in the first week of camp, and he never returned to practice. If the 2004 fifth-round pick's career is indeed through, he'll go out with 123 tackles and 15.5 sacks across 72 games.

The Titans would like to limit recently re-signed DE Dave Ball to 30-35 snaps per game in 2012.
"(Coach Mike Munchak) kind of told me he wanted me to play less snaps and be more effective by doing that," Ball said. "So I would be fresher the whole year and be more effective. That's cool with me." Averaging 47.4 snaps across 14 games, Ball notched 55 tackles and four sacks last season, but graded out as one of the league's poorer 4-3 ends by Pro Football Focus.

The situational pass rusher is supposedly "considering other teams," but hasn't lined up any visits since the beginning of free agency. Unless Ball's market unexpectedly heats up, he'll likely be returning to Tennessee on a bargain-basement deal.

Ball's rep shouldn't hold his breath. Ball has long been expected to hit the open market, and will only be back in Tennessee if he fits the Titans' budget. Despite struggling through another concussion last season, Ball managed to tally 36 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles as a situational pass rusher.

Free agent DE Dave Ball insists his concussion issues are behind him.
"After I was able to play the rest of the season after those concussion issues, and was able to be fine, (retirement isn't) something I thought about much more," Ball said. "I just know now I am feeling good, feeling healthy, and feeling like I am ready to contribute again somewhere." Although he hopes to re-sign with the Titans, Ball expects to reach the open market.

Playing as a situational pass rusher, Ball tallied 36 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles in 14 games (eight starts) for the Titans in 2011. He's spent the past four years in Tennessee.

Titans DE Dave Ball revealed that he considered retirement following his latest concussion, suffered in Week 9.
Ball has been plagued by concussions throughout his football career, suffering "a number" of them last season. "I thought of it, but I am not at that point yet,'' he said. "It'll take a couple of more hard knocks before they can knock (me) out of there." Ball has been ruled out for Week 11, but hopes to return in Week 12. He has 18 tackles and a sack on the season.

The Eagles were expected to make a run at Ball, but they ended up signing Jason Babin instead. Ball, 30, is coming off a career-high 7.5 sacks in 2010.

Eagles personnel sources say the team may target free agent Dave Ball if it isn't able to pin down fellow ex-Titan Jason Babin.
Like Babin, Ball played last season under new Eagles line coach Jim Washburn in Tennessee and had the most productive year of his career. Ball is a second- or third-tier pass rusher, and the Ray Edwards domino hasn't fallen yet. Ball may come relatively cheaply once teams begin to run out of money.

The Titans are hanging it up for the season, opting to get younger players more snaps down the stretch. Ball, 29, finishes with career highs in sacks (7) and tackles (30) as one of the better situational pass rushers on the team. It will be interesting to see how much interest he generates as a free agent in 2011. Ball has impressed every time we've seen him play.

Capable backup Jacob Ford will fill in for Ball. With Kenny Britt returning, the Titans are relatively healthy -- especially compared to their Thursday night counterparts.
