Wed Aug 21 201310:11Jets lose FB Lex Hilliard for the season
Jets RB/FB Lex Hilliard needs season-ending surgery to repair a broken scapula.
Hilliard sustained the injury during Tuesday's practice. He was expected to lose out to seventh-round rookie Tommy Bohanon for the fullback/special teams role anyway. Hilliard, 29, will collect his full $715,000 base salary this season and then hit the open market in March.

Tue Sep 4 201217:30Patriots sign RB Lex Hilliard
Patriots signed RB Lex Hilliard and waived C Matt Tennant.
Hilliard has been primarily a special teamer throughout his three-year career with the Dolphins. His addition could be a sign that Shane Vereen (foot) is in danger of missing the season opener.

Fri Aug 31 201218:20Lex Hilliard loses out in RB battle
Vikings released RB Lex Hilliard.
It speaks more about the progress of Jordan Todman than it does Adrian Peterson's knee rehab. Todman will be the No. 3 running back on paper and could be the No. 2 guy if Peterson doesn't play a major role in Week 1.

Mon Aug 13 201220:55Lex Hilliard penciled in as Vikings No. 3 RB
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Vikings RB Lex Hilliard is "tightening his grip" on the No. 3 job.
Hilliard is a 28-year-old journeyman who doesn't offer a ton at tailback, but is versatile enough to chip in at fullback and on special teams. He currently holds the edge on Jordan Todman, who is dealing with a sprained ankle. With Adrian Peterson clear of the active/PUP list, Hillard won't see many offensive snaps this season.

Sun Mar 18 201221:19Vikings agree to deal with Lex Hilliard
Vikings agreed to terms with RB Lex Hilliard, formerly of the Dolphins.
A versatile, No. 3-running back type, Hilliard goes 5-foot-11, 240 and can play fullback, tailback, and contribute on special teams. He only earned 39 carries in three seasons with the Fins, averaging 3.3 yards per rush. Hilliard will compete for a roster spot behind Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart.

Tue Mar 13 201212:40Dolphins fail to tender RB Hilliard
Dolphins did not tender restricted free agent RB Lex Hilliard.
Though he was a favorite of the Tony Sparano coaching staff, Hilliard never assumed more than a special teams role in Miami. His exit gives CFL import Jerome Messam a better chance to make the 2012 roster.

Sun Oct 30 201117:10Lex Hilliard not used as goal-line back Sun.
Lex Hilliard was not used as the Dolphins' goal-line back in Sunday's loss to the Giants.
For some unknown reason, the Dolphins identified Steve Slaton as their goal-line back and used him in that role three times. That left Hilliard with two touches for 11 total yards. It shows an extreme lack of confidence from the coaches in Hilliard.

Sat Oct 15 201115:32Hilliard coming off rep-filled week
According to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero, the Dolphins gave Lex Hilliard a "lot of practice reps" this week.
It's a concern for Daniel Thomas (hamstring) owners after the rookie back was limited in practice all week. Salguero expects Thomas to make Miami's trip to New York, but stopped short of guaranteeing he will be active. Hilliard could be a shrewd add for if you're rolling the dice and leaving Thomas in your lineup on Sunday, but he would be unlikely to out-carry Reggie Bush were Thomas to be inactive.

Wed Jun 1 201112:21Hilliard expects to compete for playing time
Lex Hilliard still expects to be given the opportunity to compete for playing time in the Dolphins backfield this year.
Hilliard has two things going for him right now: GM Jeff Ireland has long been a fan, and new coordinator Brian Daboll turned a back with similar size and skills (Peyton Hillis) into the Madden cover boy last season. Hilliard is facing long odds, though. He's not nearly as talented as rookie Daniel Thomas, and coach Tony Sparano left him on the bench all of last season even as the ground game struggled.

Wed Mar 16 201111:28Dolphins don't envision Hilliard as a starter
Contrary to a previous report, the Miami Herald suggests the Dolphins don't see Lex Hillard as a viable starter or even a complementary back.
The Dolphins expect to add three backs via free agency and the draft, which would leave Hilliard deep down the depth chart as the fourth-stringer. A high-profile addition such as veteran DeAngelo Williams or Alabama's Mark Ingram is not only possible but probable.

Mon Mar 7 201109:30Rumblings about Hilliard as a feature back
There is "talk" about the Dolphins giving Lex Hilliard a chance to be the feature back, according to beat writer Omar Kelly.
Both Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams will likely walk, but expecting Hilliard to carry the load is unrealistic. He's really just a power back that went all of 2010 without a carry. If the Dolphins really saw him as a feature back, they would have given him a chance last year. It's more likely that the Miami addresses the running back position in free agency and the draft.

Fri Feb 4 201108:54GM: Hilliard could rush for 1,000 yards
Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland reportedly believes RB Lex Hilliard could rush for 1,000 yards if given the opportunity.
That opportunity isn't likely to be forthcoming because Ireland has a "much higher opinion" of Hilliard than does head coach Tony Sparano. Hilliard's upside is the power back in a committee attack. He doesn't answer the need for speed in the Dolphins' offense.

Fri Jan 28 201110:28Hilliard, Sheets expected to return to Miami
Running backs Lex Hilliard and Kory Sheets are expected back with the Dolphins in 2011.
Hilliard played all 16 games as a special teamer in 2010, but he didn't receive a single carry. Sheets spent the season on I.R. after tearing his Achilles in August. Even with the backfield situation in flux, neither player is a realistic candidate for fantasy value.
