Tue Jan 8 201316:34Redskins sign Merling to futures contract
Redskins signed DE Phillip Merling, NT Chigbo Anunoby, DL Dom Hamilton, FB Eric Kettani, FB Korey Lindsey, TE Deangelo Peterson to reserve/future contracts.
Merling is the headliner as the 32nd overall pick in the 2008 draft. He was a colossal bust in Miami, compiling just 66 tackles and 3.5 sacks in four years. Merling landed in Green Bay last spring, but lasted just three games before being released.

Sat Oct 6 201216:56Packers release Merling to make room for Neal
Packers released DE Phillip Merling.
Merling was the odd man out after Mike Neal was activated from the suspended list. A former second-round pick by the Dolphins in 2008, Merling recorded just two tackles in very limited action with Green Bay this season.

Wed May 23 201212:01Packers sign former Packers DE Merling
Packers signed DE Phillip Merling, formerly of the Dolphins.
The No. 32 pick in the 2008 draft, Merling was released last month after combining for just seven tackles in 15 games over the past two seasons. He hasn't been the same since a 2010 Achilles injury. At age 27, Merling is worth a roll of the dice for a team seeking an upgrade at defensive end in Dom Capers' 3-4 defense.

Mon Apr 23 201209:58Dolphins release second-round bust DE Merling
Dolphins released DE Phillip Merling.
Merling has been a near total bust since being the No. 32 overall pick of the 2008 draft, but the move is still somewhat surprising since the Dolphins re-signed him to a one-year, $1.26 million deal last month. His salary was not guaranteed, however. Limited to five games and three tackles by an Achilles injury in 2010, Merling was active just 10 times in 2011. He hasn't notched a sack since 2009. He'll be facing an uphill battle to crack somebody's Week 1 roster.

Tue Mar 13 201215:36Dolphins re-sign DE Phillip Merling
Dolphins re-signed restricted free agent DE Phillip Merling to a one-year, $1.26 million contract.
Merling has been a bust as the former 32nd overall pick in the draft, but the Fins will give him one more shot to make an impact in 2012 training camp. His salary is not guaranteed. Merling turns 27 in April. While there's some feeling that Miami's move from a 3-4 to 4-3 scheme could rejuvenate Merling, his continued recovery from a torn Achilles' has sapped his explosiveness.

Mon Feb 13 201216:20Phillip Merling is a restricted free agent
Dolphins DE Phillip Merling is scheduled for restricted free agency this offseason.
Merling's free agency status was a bit murky because he's been in the NFL for four years, which would ordinarily make him unrestricted. But Merling spent 11 games on 2010 on the reserve/non-football injury list, falling one game short of an "accrued year." The Dolphins will easily be able to retain Merling with an original pick tender. He was a second-rounder in 2008.

Wed Aug 31 201114:54Phillip Merling losing explosiveness
Dolphins DE Phillip Merling has shown decreased explosiveness in training camp after missing much of last season with an Achilles' injury.
Merling is running as the No. 5 end behind Randy Starks, Kendall Langford, Tony McDaniel, and Jared Odrick. The Miami Herald suggests Merling could be on the bubble, or perhaps traded if the right offer comes along. Defensive end is the Dolphins' deepest position. Merling has one tackle this preseason.

Mon Feb 14 201110:08Merling, Odrick to compete for starting spot
Phillip Merling, Jared Odrick, Randy Starks and Kendall Langford will likely compete for one starting defensive end spot in 2011, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
The Dolphins have a hole at defense end and are expected to also be searching for Paul Soliai's replacement at defensive tackle. It's possible Merling could hold that spot down in nickel sets, but both spots figure to be filled by some kind of committee.

Sun Dec 5 201020:22Merling plays around 15 snaps
Phillip Merling played about 15 snaps in his first game off Achilles' surgery.
Merling has made a remarkable recovery as he went under the knife just 4 1/2 months ago. He played defensive tackle in the nickel and saw some time at defensive end in the base defense. Most importantly, Merling came out of the game feeling healthy.

Tue Nov 30 201018:48Dolphins active DE Merling from NFI
Dolphins activated DE Phillip Merling (Achilles) from the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List.
Merling isn't ready for game action just yet, but he's made an impressive recovery from a July Achilles' tendon tear. The Dolphins apparently remain high on his talent, but he's not going to be an impact player down the stretch.
Mon Nov 22 201013:38Merling practices for first time since July
Dolphins DE Phillip Merling practiced Monday for the first time since tearing his left Achilles tendon in July.
Merling is on the reserve/non-football injury list and the team has eight days to decide whether he's healthy enough to be placed on the 53-man roster. The former second-round pick hasn't done a lot in his two years with the team and doesn't figure to be a difference-maker down the stretch if activated.

Tue Nov 9 201021:39Merling set to be activated by Dolphins?
Dolphins DE Phillip Merling (Achilles) has reportedly been telling friends he is set to be activated to the 53-man roster.
Since August, Merling has been on the non-football injury list. The NFI allows a player to return at midseason, and Merling has been jogging lightly for a month. He's not going to be ready to play in the next couple of weeks, but it looks like the Dolphins want to have him on hand for December and possibly January.

Tue Aug 31 201017:07Dolphins move Merling to NFI list
Dolphins placed DE Phillip Merling on the non-football injury list with a torn Achilles' tendon.
Players placed on NFI can theoretically return by midseason, but that won't be the case for Merling. The former No. 32 overall pick will return to compete for a roster spot in 2011. Merling's impact to this point has been minimal.

Mon Jul 19 201012:54Felony charges filed against Fins DE Merling
The Broward County (FL) state's attorney formally filed felony aggravated battery charges against Dolphins DE Phillip Merling on Monday.
Merling is accused of striking his pregnant girlfriend, which won't be taken lightly by the NFL office. The felony charge alleges that Merling hit the woman in the face, causing "redness and swelling and a cut on her lip." Though he's a first-time offender of the Personal Conduct Policy, the seriousness of the crime could be enough to get him suspended multiple games.

Fri May 28 201021:40Sparano to let league handle Merling
Coach Tony Sparano is going to let the league handle all discipline for DE Philip Merling, who was arrested for aggravated batter on Wednesday.
"I'm not a judge," offered Sparano. "I'm going to gather [information]. I'm going to sit down, visit with [Merling] and talk to him about my end of this thing, which I've done already." Merling was back with teammates for Friday's practice, but he's now a candidate to be suspended under the NFL's personal conduct policy.
