Fells (ankle) is unlikely to play in the NFL again, Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports.

Fells has already undergone five surgeries on his foot to fight an MRSA infection. He's been in the hospital since Oct. 2 and may need to stay a while longer. Fortunately, he's been doing much better the last few days, after his doctors found a combination of antibiotics that worked.

Fells will be placed on injured reserve after developing a staph infection on his chronically-injured ankle, NJ.com reports.

Fells recently underwent surgery to help correct his chronic condition, causing him to miss Week 4 and leave the Giants without one of their top tight ends moving forward. With Fells unavailable, starter Larry Donnell could see his role expanded, while Jerome Cunningham (knee) and Will Tye compete for backup snaps.

Fells, who underwent unexpected foot surgery this week, will likely be placed on IR, NFL.com's Ian Rapaport reports.

Fells did not travel with the Giants for their Week 4 contest against the Bills, and it appears he could be out for an extended period of time following the foot surgery. Regardless of who's listed where, once Donnell's healthy he's a better bet than Fells to get the bulk of the team's targets from the position.

Fells has signed a one-year deal to return to the Giants, the Daily News reports.

Fells, who caught 16 passes for 188 yards and four TDs this past season, brings valuable experience and blocking skills to the table for the Giants, whose TE corps also includes Larry Donnell and Adrien Robinson. That said, Fells' limited targets cap his fantasy upside, despite his occasional trips to the end zone.
