Schlitter was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Thursday, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Despite a rough stint with the Cubs earlier in the season, Schlitter has pitched pretty well at Triple-A Iowa this season, posting a 1.09 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with 32 strikeouts over 41.1 innings. Unfortunately for the veteran, the club decided to take him off the 40-man roster following the addition of Fernando Rodney, diminishing his chances of making a return to the majors in September when the rosters expand.

The move comes in response to the Cubs calling up yet another top prospect Tuesday in Kyle Schwarber. With Schwarber only expected to stick around for about a week, Schlitter's stint with the Triple-A club could be short-lived.

Schlitter got the final two outs in the 11th inning Sunday against the Reds to earn his first win of the season.
