Mon Oct 12 201512:01Tate has workout scheduled with Chiefs on Tuesday
Tate has a workout scheduled with the Chiefs on Tuesday, The Kansas City Star reports.
Tate's workout comes in wake of Jamaal Charles' torn ACL suffered Sunday, leaving the Chiefs' running back corp in need of help. After spending the first three years of his career with the Texans, Tate played for the Browns, Vikings and Steelers over the course of last season, including the playoffs. While he obviously was unable to stick with any of those organizations, Tate's experience makes him a veteran worth consideration from the Chiefs, explaining Tuesday's workout.
Mon Jun 8 201518:13Tate scheduled for workout with Lions on Tuesday
Tate is scheduled for a workout with the Lions on Tuesday, ESPN reports.
Tate spent last season with the Browns, Vikings and Steelers, before ultimately landing back in the free agent pool. With fewer suitors this time around, Tate has yet to catch on with a team this offseason, but will hope his workout in Detroit results in a contract offer. Should that transpire, Tate would figure to compete for a roster spot behind Joique Bell, Theo Riddick and rookie Ameer Abdullah in the Lions' backfield.
Thu May 21 201511:04Tate slated to work out for Cowboys on Thursday
Tate is slated to work out for the Cowboys on Thursday, ESPN.com's Todd Archer reports.
Tate's 2014 campaign was largely forgettable, as he opened the season with a frustrating eight-game stint with Cleveland, before seeing work in three games with the Vikings and then the Steelers (in the playoffs) as well. In the wake of the departure of DeMarco Murray, the Cowboys curiously declined to select a running back in 2015 NFL draft, leaving the team with a backfield headed by Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden, Lance Dunbar and Ryan Williams. Whereas Tate was a highly sought-after free agent last year, at this stage, it looks as though he's simply hoping to catch on somewhere as a depth option, with an eye toward re-establishing his on-field value.

Tate ran the ball five times for 19 yards and caught two passes for nine yards in Saturday's playoff loss to the Ravens.
Despite signing with the Steelers just a few days prior to Saturday's game, Tate was second for line in touches at the running back position behind Josh Harris. Tate has played for four teams since December of 2013, so it remains to be seen if he will be in the Steelers' plans beyond Saturday.
Tue Dec 30 201414:43Ben Tate: Signs With Steelers
Tate agreed to a contract with the Steelers on Tuesday, Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
The Steelers brought Tate in to provide some depth with Le'Veon Bell (knee) questionable at best for Saturday's Wild Card game against the Ravens. It's anyone's guess as to exactly how the Steelers would split the carries in Bell's absence, but in such a scenario, Tate at least gives the Steelers a veteran to turn to if the team's two rookie running backs aren't getting the job done.
Tue Dec 30 201410:43Ben Tate: Visiting Steelers On Tuesday
Tate is visiting with the Steelers on Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
The Steelers have two unproven rookies for depth behind star running back Le'Veon Bell, who is in serious danger of missing Saturday's playoff game against the Ravens because of a hyperextended right knee. Still, Tate struggled with both the Browns and Vikings this season, so it's hard to imagine him playing a major role in Saturday's game, even if he is ultimately signed. Not that such a scenario can be ruled out, but rookie UDFA Josh Harris still seems like the best bet to get carries, if Bell is unable to play.
Tue Dec 23 201418:17Ben Tate: Waived By Minnesota
Tate was waived by the Vikings on Tuesday.
The Vikings brought Tate in after the Browns cut bait in mid-November, but the experiment proved ill fated, as Tate averaged a mere 2.9 yards per attempt on 13 totes with Minnesota. He was active last Sunday but did not see the field. Matt Asiata and Joe Banyard will head the Vikings' backfield in Week 17, while Tate will likely look to latch on elsewhere as a No. 2 option next summer.

Tate was active for Sunday's loss to Miami, but did not get any playing time.
Joe Banyard worked as the backup running back as the Vikings are likely looking at Banyard's potential for 2015. Tate's lack of playing time likely indicates he's not in next season's plans.

Tate had five carries for eight yards in Sunday's loss to Detroit.
Tate had 13 snaps on offense compared to 45 for Matt Asiata and 11 for Joe Banyard. Tate continues to have a small backup role and that likely won't change the final two weeks.

Head coach Mike Zimmer said he'd like to get Tate more carries this week. "I think Matt [Asiata] probably had a few too many carries," Zimmer told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "We'd like to get Ben a few more carries this week as well, and so we'll see. Sometimes you just get in the flow of games and things happen."
Tate has had eight carries in his first two games with the Vikings. Asiata will remain the starter with Jerick McKinnon on injured reserve with a back injury. Asiata had 19 carries last week compared to Tate's five carries. While we could see Tate getting a few more carries, it doesn't sound like there will be a major shift in the workload.

Tate had three carries for 15 yards in Sunday's overtime win over the Jets.
While Tate finished with more touches than fellow backup Joe Banyard (one carry for nine rushing yards and one catch for 12 receiving yards), Matt Asiata dominated the touches out of the backfield, rushing 19 times for 54 yards and catching three passes for 10 receiving yards. Tate's fantasy upside is very limited as long as Asiata is healthy, especially in Week 15 against a Lions defense allowing the fewest rushing yards per game in the NFL this season.

Tate will likely split backup carries with Joe Banyard on Sunday against the Jets, as Matt Asiata is listed as the starter, according to ESPN.com.
With limited touches against a Jets defense allowing the third-fewest rushing yards per game this season, Tate remains a fairly weak fantasy option.

With Jerick McKinnon out for a second consecutive game this week against the Jets due to a back injury, head coach Mike Zimmer said he plan to use the same approach at running back as last week, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Tate had just five carries for 15 yards last week.
It looks like Matt Asiata will start and get the bulk of carries with Tate having a minor backup role. Joe Banyard will also be in the mix, but he got just two carries last week.
Sun Nov 30 201417:38Tate had five carries for 15 yards Sunday against Panthers
Tate had five carries for 15 yards Sunday against the Panthers.
Matt Asiata got the start in place of the injured Jerick McKinnon (back), finishing with 14 carries for 52 rushing yards and catching four passes for five receiving yards, leaving very little for Tate and fellow backup Joe Banyard (two carries for eight yards). McKinnon isn't expected to be out for long, so it's possible that he could return in Week 14 against the Jets, which would further limit Tate's offensive potential. Making matters worse, the Jets are allowing the fourth-fewest rushing yards per game this season.
Sun Nov 30 201412:28Tate could earn looks behind starter Matt Asiata (concussion)
With Jerick McKinnon (back) inactive Sunday versus the Panthers, Tate could earn looks behind starter Matt Asiata (concussion), Ben Goessling of ESPN.com reports.
In his Vikings debut last Sunday, Tate failed to play a single snap, despite Asiata's absence due to a head injury. While McKinnon acted as the starter last week, Joe Banyard was the complementary back, posting five rushes for 26 yards and three catches for 19 yards. Banyard is once again expected to pick up touches, this time behind Asiata, but Tate's first touches as a member of the Vikings could very well come to pass.

With Jerick McKinnon (back) doubtful against Carolina on Sunday, the Vikings will likely turn to an unclear combination of Matt Asiata, Joe Banyard and Tate at running back.
Tate did not play against Green Bay on Sunday, but that wasn't surprising given that he had been claimed by the team just four days prior. Still, even with an extra week of practice and McKinnon out of the way, Tate isn't guaranteed to exceed or even match the workloads of Asiata or Banyard barring further notice.
Sun Nov 23 201420:38Tate one of only two players
Tate was one of only two players, joining backup quarterback Christian Ponder, to be active Sunday against the Packers but not play a single snap, ESPN.com reports.
Tate was claimed off waivers from the Browns on Wednesday and was fully expected to be Jerick McKinnon's backup Sunday in place of Matt Asiata, who was out with a concussion. However, the backup role went to Joe Banyard, who got the first five careers of his NFL career instead. Tate was a very limited fantasy producer when he was with the Browns, and it doesn't appear that he's going to get many opportunities to turn that around in Minnesota.
Sun Nov 23 201411:46Ben Tate: Active Sunday
Tate is active for Sunday's game against the Packers, Albert Breer of NFL Network reports.
With Matt Asiata (concussion) out of commission, Tate is in line to handle a role in the Vikings' offense, which would likely take the form of Jerick McKinnon's primary backup. If the breakdown mimics previous weeks, Tate could be a touchdown vulture, but that's wholly unclear at this point.

Tate could have a role in the offense this week against Green Bay with Matt Asiata ruled out with a concussion, but it's also not clear he'll be active, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Tate had just two days of practice after being claimed off waivers from Cleveland. Even if he is active, he may have a limited role as the backup to Jerick McKinnon. If Tate isn't active, the Joe Banyard could assume backup running back duties.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said he isn't sure Tate will be active this week even though he practiced with the team for the first time Thursday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. "He got some reps and was in the blitz pickup. He was in everything, so we'll see how fast he gets. It was a quick day for him," Zimmer said.
Tate's status for this weekend likely depends on whether Matt Asiata will play after suffering a concussion. Even if Tate does play, his limited practiced time make it sound like he will have a small goal-line role against the Packers.
