Tue Apr 5 202209:07Todd Frazier To Announce Retirement
Veteran third baseman/first baseman Todd Frazier will be announcing his retirement from the MLB on Tuesday. The 36-year-old revealed his intentions to retire to Greg Joyce of the New York Post, telling Jones, "It's one of the toughest decisions I've ever made." Frazier will be best remembered for his time with the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets. He made a pair of All-Star game appearances as a member of the Reds in 2014 and 2015, crushing 64 homers over that two-year span. Frazier compiled a total of 218 home runs across his 11 years in the majors.

A look at what's happening around the majors today: ___ MEANS STREAK? Orioles ace John Means got five days of rest following his no-hitter last week against Seattle, and now he'll try to match Johnny Vander Meer's record with a second straight no-no against the streaking Mets, who have won five in a row for the first time since August 2019. Vander Meer is the only pitcher in major league history with consecutive no-hitters, accomplished in 1938 for the Cincinnati Reds. Marcus Stroman (3-3, 2.12) hopes to anchor New York's rotation until Jacob deGrom returns. The two-time Cy Young Award winner will be placed on the injured list before the game after exiting a start Sunday with right side soreness. Thu Apr 22 202112:50Pirates' Ke’Bryan Hayes hurts wrist; Todd Frazier called up
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes has aggravated his left wrist injury while taking batting practice, delaying his potential return to the majors. Manager Derek Shelton declined to put a timetable on how much longer Hayes could be out. The Pirates promoted two-time All-Star Todd Frazier from the team’s alternate site to provide depth at both corner infield spots. Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Thursday that Hayes tweaked the wrist during indoor batting practice against a high-velocity pitching machine Wednesday in Detroit. Hayes, 24, initially injured the wrist while taking a swing in a loss to Chicago on April 3. He returned to Pittsburgh on Thursday for further evaluation. “It’s the same spot,” Tomczyk said. “And he felt it on the same swing when he had to awkwardly extend his wrist as he did during the game in Chicago.” Hayes was reaching to make contact with an outside pitch when the discomfort returned. “He was disappointed,” Shelton... Sun Mar 28 202101:15Bruce, Sandoval on big league rosters, Maybin, Frazier cut
Jay Bruce returned to the major leagues Saturday, making the New York Yankees' roster at the deadline for decisions on free agents who had gone to spring training with minor league contracts. Atlanta added third baseman Pablo Sandoval, infielder Ehire Adrianza and reliever Nate Jones to its major league roster. The Chicago Cubs told infielder Eric Sogard he will be added. Detroit, having already told pitcher Julio Teheran he will be on the roster, informed pitcher Derek Holland he will be added and decided to pay a $100,000 retention bonus to keep pitcher Erasmo Ramirez. Under baseball's collective bargaining agreement, players who became free agents after the World Series and then went to spring training with minor league contracts had to be told by noon EDT Saturday that they would be added to the 40-man roster, paid the retention bonus or released. Released players can re-sign with the same team. Miami paid the retention bonus to catcher Sandy Leon, the only other player given the bonus.... [More]

Sat Mar 27 202119:15Veteran infielder Todd Frazier opts out of deal with Pirates
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Todd Frazier won't be a Pittsburgh Pirate after all. The two-time All-Star infielder has opted out of his contract, making him a free agent. The 35-year-old signed a minor-league deal in February that included a clause allowing him to opt out by March 25. Frazier hit .250 with three home runs in 12 spring training games for the Pirates but appeared to be the odd man out with the season opener looming next week. Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton called Frazier “a good player” but said finding a spot for him on the bench might have been difficult if the Pirates carry 14 pitchers into the regular season. “If we do take 14 pitchers, then versatility is going to be really important and I think that kind of led to our decision," Shelton said. Frazier signed with the expectation that he could platoon with Colin Moran at first base and even fill in at third — where he was an All-Star for Cincinnati in 2014 and 2015 — if needed. Yet Wilmer Difo and Phil Evans offer more position flexibility for Pittsburgh. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Mon Mar 1 202118:07Kiner-Falefa not faking confidence as new Texas starting SS
Isiah Kiner-Falefa has always been a shortstop, but first had to fake his confidence as a catcher and a third baseman for the Texas Rangers. After winning a Gold Glove as a third baseman last season, Kiner-Falefa feels like he can finally be himself, and the leader for a rebuilding team, as their starting shortstop. “Third base isn’t who I am. It’s what I did,” Kiner-Falefa said. “I'm shortstop. I’m an elite shortstop, and I’m ready to prove it. But I understood that for me to get this opportunity, I had to be a really good third baseman. And that’s just one of the things I did. I had to be a catcher. ... And now I can be myself and do what I want to do, not what everybody else wants me to do.” The Rangers had enough confidence in the Hawaiian, who turns 26 on March 23, that they declared him their top shortstop this offseason before trading Elvis Andrus — their opening day shortstop each of the past 12 seasons, and the only player remaining from their two World Series appearances a decade... Sat Feb 20 202115:33Pirates prospect Priester already daydreaming about PNC Park
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Quinn Priester is very much trying to live in the moment. That doesn't mean it's easy. Not when the Pittsburgh Pirates are pointing to you as one of the key parts of a core they believe will one day return the team to contention. So yeah, as much as the 20-year-old right-hander is well aware of how much work remains to be done before he reaches the majors, his mind tends to wander toward what could be. “I think like anybody would, I catch myself a little bit daydreaming about playoff games at PNC,” Priester said Saturday. Even if those dreams likely remain out of reach in the short term for both Priester and the organization. The Pirates are still in the early stages of a top-to-bottom makeover and are coming off a season in which they finished with the worst record in the big leagues. And Priester is still hoping for something akin to a sense of normalcy, namely facing batters with something significant on the line. That wasn't the case during 2020, when the COVID-19... [More]
Fri Feb 19 202119:23Todd Frazier agrees to minor league deal with Pirates
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Infielder Todd Frazier agreed to a minor league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates that includes an invitation to big league spring training. If Frazier is added to the 40-man roster, he would get a one-year contract paying a $1.5 million salary while in the major leagues, as part of the agreement announced Friday. He would be able to earn $600,000 in performance bonuses for plate appearances: $100,000 each for 275, 325 and 375, and $150,000 apiece for 425 and 475. He can ask for his release if not added to the big league roster by March 25. Pittsburgh is in need of depth at both corner infield spots after trading first baseman Josh Bell to Washington in the offseason. Colin Moran will move from third base to first full-time, with Ke'Bryan Hayes projected to start at third. The 35-year-old Frazier is a career .242 hitter with 218 home runs and 636 RBIs while playing for five teams, including Cincinnati, the New York Mets and the New York Yankees. Frazier split time with Texas and the Mets in 2020, hitting .236 with four home runs and 12 RBIs. Frazier is expected to join the Pirates in time to be on the field for the first day of workouts for position players on Monday. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Fri Dec 18 202017:00Mets send RHP Ryan to Rangers to complete Todd Frazier deal
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets are sending minor league right-hander Ryder Ryan to the Texas Rangers as the player to be named in a trade for infielder Todd Frazier on Aug. 31. Ryan is a 25-year-old reliever who last pitched at Double-A Binghamton in 2019 because the pandemic wiped out the 2020 minor league season. He was 3-1 with a 3.05 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 44 1/3 innings with the Rumble Ponies. Ryan was left unprotected for this month's Rule 5 draft and was not selected. New York announced the completion of the deal Friday. Frazier batted .224 with two home runs in 14 games after being acquired by the Mets. He became a free agent after the season. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
