Fri Sep 4 201516:43Yates released by Falcons on Friday
Yates was released by the Falcons on Friday, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
With Rex Grossman also getting cut, Matt Ryan and Sean Renfree are the only quarterbacks left on the roster. Following an unimpressive preseason, Yates isn't likely to find an NFL job this year.

Yates completed 8-of-15 passes for 78 yards and an interception in Friday's game against the Jets.
Yates has now thrown two interceptions and no touchdowns in two preseason games, and was sacked for a safety that started a run of 30 unanswered points for the Jets. Alternating drives with Sean Renfree most of the game, Yates did little to distinguish himself in the battle to serve as Matt Ryan's backup.
Mon Mar 9 201523:18Yates will sign one-year deal with Falcons on Tuesday
Yates will sign a one-year deal with the Falcons on Tuesday, Adam Caplan of ESPN reports.
The deal will give Yates another $1.5 million to serve as the primary backup to Matt Ryan once again in Atlanta. Unless Ryan suffers an unforeseen injury, Yates is in line to see another season go by while watching from the bench.

Yates completed 15-of-20 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns against the Jaguars in the preseason finale Thursday.
Yates looked good, but most NFL quarterbacks should do well against second team players. He's the clear cut number two quarterback behind Matt Ryan.

Yates completed 7-of-16 passes for 127 yards in Friday's preseason game against the Dolphins.
Yates led all Falcons quarterbacks in attempts and yards, but he was unable to lead the Falcons into the endzone. He'll continue to battle Sean Renfree for the right to back up Matt Ryan, and he'll get a chance to exact some revenge on his old team, the Texans, in the next preseason game.
Thu Jun 19 201400:43Not so fast: Texans deal QB Yates to Falcons
Falcons acquired QB T.J. Yates from the Texans in exchange for ILB Akeem Dent.
On Tuesday, it was reported that Yates had been cut by the Texans. A source informed Profootballtalk that once word got out around the league that the Texans were planning to waive Yates, teams started calling about a trade. In Atlanta, Yates should have the clear edge over Dominique Davis for No. 2 duties behind Matt Ryan. Also in the mix at quarterback for the Falcons are Sean Renfree and Jeff Matthews. Yates, 27, has a 2-3 career record and led the Texans to the franchise's first playoff victory in 2011. He has as many postseason wins as Ryan.

Tue Jun 17 201417:57Houston prunes QB corps, waives T.J. Yates
Texans waived QB T.J. Yates.
The move comes on the same day coach Bill O'Brien admitted Ryan Fitzpatrick was the Texans' starter. Yates was set to do battle with Case Keenum and rookie Tom Savage for No. 2 duties, and Keenum for a roster spot. Instead, the Texans chose Keenum's 2013 film over Yates' distant 2011 accomplishments, where he was at the helm for Houston's first franchise playoff victory. Yates figures to draw interest from the Ravens, who are thin behind Joe Flacco, and have Yates' former coach Gary Kubiak calling the shots on offense.

Mon Apr 28 201416:32Ravens 'keeping eye' on QBs Yates & Keenum
According to the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens are "keeping an eye on" Texans reserve QBs T.J. Yates and Case Keenum.
Both have history with new Ravens OC Gary Kubiak from Houston, and beat writer Jeff Zrebiec believes Kubiak "would be intrigued, especially by Yates." Yates is more the classic pocket passer than Keenum, and would make for a more natural backup behind Jeff Flacco. The Ravens' current backup quarterback is Tyrod Taylor, who has struggled in the pros and may not appeal to Kubiak.

Sun Apr 6 201423:30Yates, Keenum to battle for 1 roster spot
The Houston Chronicle expects reserve QBs T.J. Yates and Case Keenum to compete for one roster spot in training camp.
(This assumes Yates isn't gone before camp begins.) Gary Kubiak and interim coach Wade Phillips both passed over Yates repeatedly last year in Houston's QB carousel. Through three NFL seasons, Yates has a 3:6 TD-to-INT ratio and 60.8 completion rate. As rookie coach Bill O'Brien is installing a spread offense, we expect him to keep Keenum over Yates, assuming he keeps one at all.

Tue Dec 24 201313:10T.J. Yates not an option at QB 'right now'
Speaking Tuesday, Texans interim coach Wade Phillips indicated T.J. Yates is not an option to start the Week 17 finale against the Titans.
"Not right now," Phillips said. After not playing at all this season and seeing very limited reps in practice as the No. 3 quarterback, it would be extremely difficult for Yates to step in. But what do the Texans have to lose? It sounds as if it will be Matt Schaub under center if Case Keenum (thumb) is unable to play. The Texans can lock up the No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft with a loss.

Mon Dec 23 201317:17Texans leave door open for Yates start
Speaking Monday, Texans interim coach Wade Phillips left the door open for T.J. Yates to start in Week 17.
The Texans have seen all they need to see of Matt Schaub, while Case Keenum (thumb) is still questionable. The Texans clearly have little faith in the third-year pro who somehow led them to a 2011 Wild Card victory, but they have nothing to lose by trotting Yates out for a meaningless Week 17 game against the Titans. A decision should be made by Wednesday.

Sun Dec 1 201311:46T.J. Yates leads quiet Texans inactives list
Texans declared QB T.J. Yates, DE Tim Jamison, OG Alex Kupper, LB Ricky Sapp, OG Cody White, OT Andrew Gardner and S Jawanza Sterling inactive for Week 13 against the Patriots.
It's a quiet list for the Texans, who enter Week 13 relatively healthy despite their abysmal record. The main question is how things will shake out at running back. Ben Tate will "start," but will have to be on his game early if he doesn't want to cede significant work to Dennis Johnson for the second consecutive week.

Thu Sep 5 201314:44T.J. Yates earns No. 2 job over Case Keenum
T.J. Yates has officially been named the Texans' No. 2 quarterback.
Yates got all he could handle from Case Keenum - not a particularly good sign - but will live to see another day as Matt Schaub's backup. Yates has vanishingly little value in Dynasty leagues.

Wed Jul 31 201318:30T.J. Yates not distancing himself from Keenum
The Sideline View's Lance Zierlein believes Texans backup QB T.J. Yates has failed to distance himself from Case Keenum and Stephen McGee in training camp.
It's not a good sign for Yates, who has limited arm talent and athleticism. We've seen Zierlein previously hint Yates could lose the backup job to noodle-armed Keenum. Ultimately, Zierlein expects Yates to be "handed" the No. 2 position because he's started NFL games. He's just not Houston's QB of the future.

Sun Jan 15 201216:54Yates picked off three times in playoff loss
T.J. Yates completed 17-of-35 passes for 184 yards and three interceptions as the Texans fell to the Ravens in the Divisional round.
Yates led a handful of impressive, chain-moving drives, but the Ravens were there to capitalize every time he messed up. The fifth-round rookie has a habit of telegraphing throws, and Lardarius Webb picked Yates off twice after he stared down Andre Johnson. Yates' third interception, also intended for Johnson, was read perfectly by Ed Reed late in the fourth quarter and all but sealed the loss for Houston. Yates is a promising young player and potential high-grade long-term backup, but he's not going to pose any challenge to Matt Schaub's starting job in 2012 training camp.

Sat Jan 7 201220:02Yates throws for 159 yards, TD in win
T.J. Yates completed 11-of-20 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown against the Bengals in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
The first rookie drafted after the fourth round to start a playoff game, Yates was outplayed by Andy Dalton early on before settling down for an efficient final two quarters. Boosted by a strong running game and the Texans' trademark play-action game plan, Yates finished with a more than respectable 8.0 YPA and 97.7 passer rating. The sledding gets much tougher against the Ravens' swarming front seven next Sunday.

Sat Jan 7 201215:13Yates, Andre Johnson both active for WC tilt
T.J. Yates (shoulder) and Andre Johnson (hamstring) are both active for Saturday's Wild Card game against the Bengals.
Third-string QB Jeff Garcia is inactive, suggesting the Texans are not at all concerned with Yates' separated non-throwing shoulder. Johnson, Houston's first-round pick in 2003, is active for the first playoff game in franchise history after turning in a setback-free performance in Week 17. However, coach Gary Kubiak has said he may be limited to 45-50 snaps. Also inactive for the Texans are WR Jeff Maehl, TE Garrett Graham, OT Andrew Gardner, G Thomas Austin, CB Brandon Harris and S Troy Nolan.

Sat Jan 7 201213:42Yates' shoulder not a concern Saturday
T.J. Yates is not expected to be affected by his separated non-throwing shoulder in Saturday's Wild Card game against the Bengals.
Yates turned in a full week of practice, and was able to avoid a setback. There have been no indications he'll be a short leash despite veteran Jake Delhomme's solid fill-in performance against the Titans in Week 17. Playing without Andre Johnson, Yates completed 26-of-44 passes for 300 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Houston's Week 14 win over Cincinnati.

Wed Jan 4 201214:48T.J. Yates practices fully again Wednesday
T.J. Yates (shoulder) again practiced fully on Wednesday and remains on track to start versus Cincinnati in the Wild Card round.
Coach Gary Kubiak said after Wednesday's workout that Yates "practiced well" and will take all of the first-team reps again Thursday. The Texans have given no apparent thought to starting Jake Delhomme in the playoffs' first round.

Tue Jan 3 201214:16T.J. Yates practices fully on Tuesday
T.J. Yates (shoulder) turned in a full practice on Tuesday.
Per coach Gary Kubiak, Yates was fine throwing the ball and did everything he would have been asked to do during a normal Wednesday during the season. He remains on track to start against the Bengals on Saturday.
