Ascanio signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers in December, but he won't throw a pitch for the club. The 26-year-old right-hander has appeared in just eight major-league games since undergoing shoulder surgery in October of 2009.

Dodgers signed RHP Jose Ascanio to a minor league contract.
The deal includes an invitation to spring training. Ascanio had a brief stint with the Pirates this past season, but spent the majority of the year in the minors, posting a 5.29 ERA and 56/16 K/BB ratio over 47 2/3 innings between Triple-A Indianapolis and High-A Bradenton. He has struggled to get his career back on track following shoulder surgery in October of 2009 and is unlikely to make a major impact in the Dodgers' bullpen.

Jose Ascanio (elbow, head) pitched a scoreless rehab inning Friday at Triple-A Indianapolis.
Ascanio was struck in the right side of the head with a line drive in his last rehab outing, but he did not suffer a concussion and was back in action shortly. The righty should be ready now to return to the majors.

Jose Ascanio (shoulder, elbow) had to be removed from his rehab start Thursday after being struck in the right side of the face with a line drive.
He was taken to a hospital and thankfully was diagnosed only with a facial contusion. It's not clear when Ascanio will resume his rehab.

Jose Ascaino complained of tightness in his right elbow after throwing his first bullpen session on Sunday.
Ascaino missed the beginning of camp due to an issue with his visa, but the Pirates believe he is already ahead in his throwing program because he pitched in winter ball through December. "He can catch up quickly," said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington. "As a reliever, this won't set him back at all." The 25-year-old right-hander missed most of last season recovering from shoulder surgery and was pulled from a rehab stint with High-A Bradenton last August to to an injury to his right hand. He enters spring training out of options.

Pirates activated RHP Jose Ascanio from the 60-day disabled list.
Ascanio spent most of the 2010 season recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum and then injured his right hand in a non-baseball setting. He should be back to full health by the start of spring training.

Jose Ascanio will not require surgery on his right hand.
Ascaino, who was on a rehab assignment from shoulder surgery, suffered an injury to his right hand in his home. Though he won't need surgery, he will keep the hand in a splint for 3-4 weeks, sidelining him for the rest of the minor league season.

Finally back from shoulder surgery last October, Ascanio just recently began a rehab assignment. The Pirates don't believe the hand injury will cost him the rest of the season.

Ascanio is coming back from a torn labrum, which is never easy to do, but at least he's still young (25 in May). He's shown he can miss bats and could still become an asset for the Pirates in the pen.
