Pettis was released by the Chargers on Friday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Pettis found himself among the first wave of roster cuts, having failed to beat out Dontrelle Inman and Jacoby Jones in the competition at wide receiver. The 27-year-old was waived by the Rams after five games last year, and has yet to surpass 40 catches in any season.

The Chargers have signed Pettis, the team's official site reports.

The 2011 third-rounder caught just 12 passes for 118 yards and a TD in five games this past season before being cut by the Rams. The 6-3, 203-pounder will now look to revive his NFL career by competing for a spot in the Chargers' wideout corps.

With his ankle not likely an issue, it appears he's simply not high enough on the depth chart to warrant playing Sunday.
