Monell was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports.
With the Triple-A season concluding Monday, Monell will join the Mets in time for Tuesday's contest. Already a member of the 40-man roster, Monell will simply provide depth as a fourth catcher over the final month of the season.
Sun Jul 19 201520:56Monell optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday
Monell was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday, The Record's Matt Ehalt reports.
With Monell just 8-for-45 (.178 BA) this season, the Mets will call up Anthony Recker to serve as Kevin Plawecki's backup. Recker hasn't fared much better at the plate this season, and Monell has excellent numbers at the Triple-A level for the second time in three years.
Tue Jun 23 201516:57Monell recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday
Monell was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, Mike Vorkunov of The Star-Ledger reports.
Travis d'Arnaud (elbow) was placed on the disabled list, creating the need for another catcher. Kevin Plawecki will get most of the playing time, with Monell likely spelling him one or twice per week. The 29-year-old Monell was never a highly regarded prospect, but he does have a .374/.434/.551 slash line for Triple-A Las Vegas this season. Of course, he's been playing in an extreme hitter's park, and owns a .407 BABIP.
Sun May 24 201517:18Monell optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday
Monell was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports.
While Monell crushed pitching in Triple-A to being the season, batting .397/.455/.638 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 17 games, it didn't translate to the majors. Over 11 games with the Mets, the backstop went just 1-for-15 at the dish with four strikeouts. He'll be replaced on the 25-man roster by Danny Muno, and with Travis d'Arnaud set to return soon, he will drop further on the totem pole.

Monell will make his first career major league start behind the plate Friday against the Brewers, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports.
Monell has five at-bats with the Mets this season and had eight with the Giants in 2013, but has never started behind the plate. Following a blazing start at Triple-A Las Vegas (23-for-58 with four home runs), he'll finally get that chance Friday, batting seventh for the Mets.

Monell will be added to the Mets' 40-man roster ahead of Tuesday's game against the Orioles, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports.
It's not clear which player Monell will replace, but a team official indicated it won't affect the Mets' current two catchers, Kevin Plawecki and Anthony Recker. The addition of Monell likely just amounts to the Mets wanting another lefty bat on the bench with Kirk Nieuwenhuis in a 2-for-22 slump at the plate to begin the season.
Sat Apr 4 201517:30Monell assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas
Monell was assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
A calf strain cost Monell several weeks of the 2014 season, and he wasn't especially effective in his 68 games at Triple-A, posting a .238/.301/.364 batting line with four homers. He did hit 20 homers with the Giants' Triple-A Fresno affiliate in 2013, so there's some hope for a career revival.

Monell hit his third home run of the spring, a three-run shot, to carry the Mets to a 6-4 win over the Marlins on Tuesday.
Monell is now 11-for-25 this spring and has likely forced his way into the conversation to be Travis d'Arnaud's back up. Anthony Recker is the incumbent, but Monell's strong spring to date and lefty bat off the bench could end up giving him the edge.

Monell signed a minor league contract with the Mets on Wednesday which includes an invite to spring training, Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports.
A calf strain cost Monell several weeks of the 2014 season and he wasn't especially effective in his 68 games at Triple-A, posting a .238/.301/.364 batting line with four homers. He hit 20 homers with the Giants' Triple-A Fresno affiliate in 2013, however, and owns a career .347 OBP in the minors, yet has played in eight games at the major league level. The 28-year-old will get to make a bid for a roster spot in spring training, competing with Anthony Recker for the top backup job behind Travis d'Arnaud.

Wed Mar 5 201422:24Monell blasts off for four RBI against Twins
Johnny Monell went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in the Orioles' win over the Twins on Wednesday.
Monell struck out in three of his first four at-bats this spring, but the 27-year-old couldn't miss on Wednesday. Monell stroked two singles to go with his three-run home run off Jared Burton in the third inning. The catcher, who was acquired from the Giants in November, has always been a threat at the plate. If the Orioles can stomach his defense behind it, he could find his way onto the Opening Day roster as backup to Matt Wieters.

Orioles acquired catcher Johnny Monell from the Giants for cash considerations.
The 27-year-old Monell hit .275/.364/.494 as Triple-A Fresno's starting catcher last season, but defense behind the plate has held him back. While the Orioles could consider carrying him as Matt Wieters' backup, they'll likely continue to look at alternatives.
