Monell was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports.

With the Triple-A season concluding Monday, Monell will join the Mets in time for Tuesday's contest. Already a member of the 40-man roster, Monell will simply provide depth as a fourth catcher over the final month of the season.

With Monell just 8-for-45 (.178 BA) this season, the Mets will call up Anthony Recker to serve as Kevin Plawecki's backup. Recker hasn't fared much better at the plate this season, and Monell has excellent numbers at the Triple-A level for the second time in three years.

Travis d'Arnaud (elbow) was placed on the disabled list, creating the need for another catcher. Kevin Plawecki will get most of the playing time, with Monell likely spelling him one or twice per week. The 29-year-old Monell was never a highly regarded prospect, but he does have a .374/.434/.551 slash line for Triple-A Las Vegas this season. Of course, he's been playing in an extreme hitter's park, and owns a .407 BABIP.

While Monell crushed pitching in Triple-A to being the season, batting .397/.455/.638 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 17 games, it didn't translate to the majors. Over 11 games with the Mets, the backstop went just 1-for-15 at the dish with four strikeouts. He'll be replaced on the 25-man roster by Danny Muno, and with Travis d'Arnaud set to return soon, he will drop further on the totem pole.

This means that Steve Clevenger has won the backup job to Orioles starting catcher Matt Wieters. Monell will serve as organizational depth this year for Baltimore.

If the Orioles can stomach his defense behind it, he could find his way onto the Opening Day roster as backup to Matt Wieters.
