Cowboys Executive VP Stephen Jones said the team is considering a quarterback change from Brandon Weeden to Cassel, 105.3 The FAN reports.

The Cowboys have two weeks to make their decision before a crucial Week 7 game against the Giants. Cassel is a known and unimpressive commodity, but he may be a bit better than Brandon Weeden, who followed a pair of solid performances with a clunker against the Patriots on Sunday. Even if Dez Bryant (foot) is back for Week 7, the Dallas quarterback will be a bottom-of-the-barrel option.

Cassel will be active Sunday for the first time since being acquired by the Cowboys, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Kellen Moore has been acting as Brandon Weeden's backup the last two games, but the Cowboys feel that Cassel knows the playbook well enough now to step in if needed.

Cassel is inactive for Sunday's game against the Falcons.

The Cowboys added Cassel to the roster earlier this week after Tony Romo (broken collarbone) was ruled out for about eight weeks, but it will still take some time for the new acquisition to learn the playbook. As a result, Cassel will remain in street clothes for this week's game, as the Cowboys go with Brandon Weeden as their starter and Kellen Moore as the backup quarterback.

Cassel has been traded from the Bills to the Cowboys, Albert Breer of the NFL Network reports.

Tony Romo is out for a while, so the Cowboys needed to stock up quickly in terms of quarterback depth. While we would assume Brandon Weeden is the interim starter, he's not nearly as established as Romo, so Cassel could be one or two bad starts away from having a starting job again. We'll see if he gets slotted above Kellen Moore in the pecking order once he gets up to speed.

Coach Rex Ryan says Cassel will be the backup to starter Tyrod Taylor, with EJ Manuel back down to the No. 3 role, Joe Buscaglia of WKBW in Buffalo reports.

Well, that was a quick recovery by the veteran, though maybe the Bills had this planned all along, as they apparently got Cassel back at a cheaper salary. Taylor is no sure thing as the starter, so Cassel could be a bad game or two away from having one of the league's 32 most important jobs.

Cassel has been re-signed by the Bills, ESPN's Adam Scheffer reports.

This is a nice little salary play by the Bills, cutting him over the weekend and getting him back at a cheaper price. He'll serve as the No. 3 quarterback to start the season, though he's a nice veteran presence behind Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel. And neither of those two is exactly proven, so it wouldn't be a shock if Cassel ended up seeing some action in 2015.

Outplayed by EJ Manuel during the preseason, Cassel won't even make the final roster, despite entering training camp as the presumed favorite for the starting job. He'll likely catch on with another team for Week 1.

The Bills are reportedly having an internal debate with regard to the possibility of cutting Cassel, wgr550.com reports.

In any case, the team plans to start Tyrod Taylor at quarterback to open the coming season, but with EJ Manuel having shown well of late, it's possible that the team could elect to cut ties with Cassel. Such a potential outcome remains speculative, but may make sense to the team in terms of roster space/salary cap management.

According to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer, the Bills plan to go with Cassel's teammate Tyrod Taylor as their starting quarterback.

The Bills and Rex Ryan end up going the exciting route with Taylor instead of a comfortable shoe in Cassel. The Bills claim they plan to keep three quarterbacks, and with Taylor being no sure thing it's important to watch whether Cassel or EJ Manuel ends up as the No. 2 guy.

Cassel completed six of seven passes for 38 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Steelers.

Although the stat line doesn't look bad, it wasn't a good night for Cassel, as both E.J. Manuel and Tyrod Taylor lit it up. Taylor seemingly remains the favorite to win the starting job, but Manuel may have worked his way back into the conversation. Bills head coach Rex Ryan has suggested multiple times that he's in no rush to crown a winner of the competition.

Cassel won't play in Thursday's preseason game at Cleveland, WKBW Channel 7 reports.

Cassel will thus yield QB duties to EJ Manuel, Tyrod Taylor, and Matt Simms for the evening. However, the offense will be without its Top 5 running backs and Top 3 wide receivers, meaning Manuel and Taylor could have difficulty standing out. In any case, expect Cassel to return for the Bills' third exhibition on Saturday, Aug. 29 against the Steelers.

Cassel completed 7-of-8 passes for 45 yards in Friday's preseason opener against the Panthers.

Cassel stayed in for the first two drives, which resulted in a punt and a missed 37-yard field goal. He didn't make any throws that were especially impressive, but he does deserve credit for his accuracy, as the only incompletion came on a drop. Cassel did nothing to lose his lead in the competition, but Tyrod Taylor and E.J. Manuel did also play well Friday night.

Cassel received about half the snaps with the starters during Tuesday's practice, while EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor split the rest, BuffaloBills.com reports.

Cassel is also starting the preseason opener this week. While coach Rex Ryan hasn't come out and said it, Cassel seems to be pulling away in the competition for the top job. He's been the most consistent performer, and it seems like with a decent preseason the Bills may turn to someone with his makeup, perhaps thinking they can win a lot of games with a safe quarterback, a strong run game, and a great defense.

A report surfaced earlier in the week that suggested Cassel may be pulling ahead slightly due to his increased reps with the first-team offense and the fact that he could be the safest option. Bills beat writer Vic Carucci surmises that Cassel may be slightly ahead in the three-man quarterback race, The Buffalo News reports.

Cassel is getting more first-team reps through the first batch of training camp practices, but that could change on a dime. The gist of Carucci's hypothesis is that Cassel provides the safest option for a team that has a fantastic defense to go with what should be a strong running game, whereas EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor are more unpredictable. There's some merit to that, though we think certain brass members would like to see Manuel - who has more upside and a better arm - step up his game. We'll find out more as the team has a live scrimmage this weekend, plus preseason games aren't too far away.

Cassel has now worked with the first-unit offense for all three camp practices so far, The Buffalo News reports. Said coach Rex Ryan, "We want the young guys to be with his experience that he is always rotating with them, with that group. Tyrod is going to get his equal turns at the one spot and so is EJ. So we are putting them there, but then when we go to (Cassel) ... Manuel and Taylor go down with the threes because they are younger and they are going to be with some of these younger guys. We think that is the best way to develop these quarterbacks."

Don't read too much into this yet, though it at least affirms Cassel will be given every chance to win a starting job and it's not just a matter of a veteran waiting in the wings in case one of the other guys screws up.

Both Cassel and EJ Manuel took snaps with the starting offense at Tuesday's organized team activities, The Buffalo News reports.

With a number of NFL teams, you can look at snap counts during OTAs to determine who's ahead in the position races. However, the Bills are using a concept where they run two offenses huddling simultaneously on separate fields, then depend more on film later. The team did say Tyrod Taylor would get some looks with the starters this week as well, though it does seem clear that Cassel and Manuel are the two frontrunners.

The Bills did not draft another quarterback, nor have they brought another one in after signing a handful of undrafted free agents Monday. That leaves the main competition for the starting job between Cassel and EJ Manuel, with Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel seemingly looking like longer shots to compete.

Right now, it's a neck-and-neck race between the top two QBs, each of whom brings vastly different offerings to Rex Ryan's new table. Cassel offers a veteran presence and stability that can manage a game should Ryan and offensive coordinator Greg Roman feel their team is strong enough everywhere else, while Manuel offers more speed, arm strength, risk, and reward. At least there's not another fresh face added to the mix. This may be the most up-for-grabs QB battle in the NFL this summer.

Coach Rex Ryan said on WGR Radio 550 on Friday that it will be an open competition between Cassel (foot) and the other Buffalo quarterbacks, BuffaloBills.com reports. Said the new coach. "It's a competition and whoever earns the job will be the guy that's out there. We have some talented guys and we'll see what happens. You bring in a veteran like Matt Cassel. He's done some pretty good things in this league. He's got that veteran presence about him. With EJ back there just going into his third year I really believe EJ is going to improve with his fundamentals having (quarterbacks coach) David Lee here. I love the fact that he's a gym rat and he's smart. With our offense being multiple we'll be able to get out of bad plays, so the mental part of it all of the quarterbacks we have should be able to handle that."

The Bills also have Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel in the mix, plus they might bring in one more guy, but presumably the real competition will be between Cassel and EJ Manuel. While neither player is the next coming of Jim Kelly or anywhere close, this will possibly be the biggest tossup in the league this summer as far as starting quarterbacks go. Manuel has the bigger upside, but he hasn't proven much of anything in limited appearances yet, while the Bills could side with Cassel if they feel they have a strong enough team elsewhere (the defense should be one of the league's better units) and want to take the safer, veteran route.
