Liddi was acquired from the Mariners in early July, but the O's needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster to they'll risk putting him through waivers. The 24-year-old hit .245/.299/.421 with 15 homers, 65 RBI and 11 stolen bases between two organizations at the Triple-A level this season. He's talented enough that another team may be willing to take a chance on him.

The M's get a little more money to spend on the international market with this deal. Liddi was designated for assignment at the end of last month despite decent power numbers this season at Triple-A Tacoma. The 24-year-old infielder could wind up being a nice get for Baltimore. He was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk.

The 24-year-old has struggled during cups of coffee with the Mariners in each of the past three seasons, but was hitting .263/.322/.454 with 11 homers and 43 RBI in 59 games at Triple-A. While he has holes in his swing, he's still young and talented enough to attract plenty of interest from other teams.

The move opens up a 25-man roster for Justin Smoak's return from the 15-day disabled list. Liddi went 1-for-17 with seven strikeouts during his time in Seattle.

None of the cuts are a surprise. Liddi has posted some big numbers in the minors at times, but he's yet to receive much of a look in Seattle and probably won't unless Kyle Seager gets injured.

Liddi has really struggled recently, collecting just two hits in his last 27 at-bats while striking out 17 times. The 23-year-old is hitting just .231 with three homers and a .655 OPS over 114 plate appearances this year.

Hitting Liddi second had worked out for manager Eric Wedge until now. It's certainly not Liddi's long-term spot: he's pretty much an all-or-nothing guy who figures to strike out about five times as often as he walks.

Liddi has primarily played third base during his professional career, but he has also played 53 games at first base in the minor leagues. The goal this spring is to test his versatility with a potential bench role in mind. The 23-year-old Italian native socked 30 homers with Triple-A Tacoma last season and batted .225 (9-for-40) with three homers and six RBI with the M's as September call-up.
