LOS ANGELES -- In a move that shook up the Los Angeles Dodgers' clubhouse, popular backup A.J. Ellis was dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies for fellow catcher Carlos Ruiz on Thursday."Obviously, it was tough decision on a personal level," Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. "We felt like from a baseball standpoint, Carlos fit our team extremely well. I could go on and on about A.J. and his attributes and what he brings to a team. And if Carlos didn't possess similar things, we wouldn't have made the move."Ellis was known as one of the leaders in the Dodgers' locker room despite limited playing time this year behind starter Yasmani Grandal. Ellis also is a close friend of Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw."Shocked. Quiet," Ellis said of Kershaw's reaction upon hearing the news, according to MLB.com. Kershaw did not speak with the media about the trade. "The shock kind of hit us both simultaneously and we both cried."Ruiz, 37, helped lead the Phillies to a World Series title in 2008, when he hit .375 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Ruiz, an All-Star in 2012, had mixed emotions about the move."I really love Philadelphia and all of the fans, my teammates, the front office, the organization, everybody," Ruiz told Philly.com. He is expected to join the Dodgers on Friday when they open a three-game set against the Chicago Cubs. "I know I'm going to miss them," Ruiz said. "I really appreciate everything we did together. On the other side, I am happy because I have a chance to go to the (postseason)."Ruiz is batting .261 with a .368 on-base percentage, a .352 slugging percentage, three homers and 12 RBIs in 48 games. Ruiz will work as the backup to Grandal in Los Angeles. In his 11-season career, all spent with the Phillies, Ruiz has a .266/.352/.393 hitting line with 68 homers and 401 RBIs in 1,069 games.Friedman said Ruiz's ability to hit left-handed pitching better than Ellis factored in the exchange. Ruiz has compiled an .830 OPS in 24 games this season against left-handers, while Ellis has a .616 OPS in 29 games against southpaws."I think that's a big part of it, (Ruiz) against left-handed pitching," Friedman said. "With Carlos, we felt like we could get more offensive production out of that position."Ellis, who is batting .194 with one home run and 13 RBIs, heads to Philly along with minor league pitcher Tommy Bergjans and a player to be named later or cash considerations. Ellis played in 544 games for the Dodgers from 2008-16, becoming a full-time player in 2012 and posting his best season that year, hitting .270 with 13 homers and 52 RBIs.He hit .237 with 36 homers and 161 RBIs in his Dodger career. In the postseason, Ellis batted .365 in 17 games. Bergjans, an eighth-round draft pick in 2015, spent the year at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, where he was 3-13 with 4.98 ERA in 24 games (21 starts).
