Massaquoi was released by the Falcons on Friday, ESPN.com reports.
Massaquoi joined the Falcons as a fifth-round pick in 2012 and posted a pair of sacks to go with 22 tackles last season. Nonetheless, even on a wildly underwhelming defense, Massaquoi will not be retained by Atlanta next season, opening the door for him to sign elsewhere this offseason.
Tue May 27 201410:02Massaquoi expected to play more outside LB
The Falcons expect third-year DE Jonathan Massaquoi to take another step forward in 2014.
Massaquoi played over 50 percent of the snaps last season after playing just 41 snaps total as a rookie. He started four games and finished third on the team with his four sacks. Massaquoi has good burst and is expected to play more as a stand-up outside linebacker with the Falcons transitioning to a 3-4 scheme. He'll compete for snaps with Osi Umenyiora, Kroy Biermann, and others.

Wed Jul 11 201215:14Massaquoi impressed at Falcons minicamp
According to the team's website, Falcons rookie DE Jonathan Massaquoi demonstrated "tremendous speed" during Atlanta's final minicamp.
Per Falcons.com, Massaquoi's burst was "evident" in special teams periods. The Falcons believe Massaquoi slumped from 13.5 sacks as a sophomore in 2010 to six as a junior in 2011 because he added 15 pounds that offseason. He reported to the Falcons at 260 -- Massaquoi's 2010 weight -- and his explosion appears to have returned. He's a sleeper to emerge as a starter down the road.
