Pead was released by the Rams on Tuesday, ESPN's Nick Wagoner reports.

With Todd Gurley, Tre Mason and Benny Cunningham all healthy, the Rams had no need for their 2012 second-round draft pick. Pead displayed top-notch speed and elusiveness in college, but he's shown next to nothing in the NFL. If he does get a look elsewhere, it may just be as a potential return man.

Pead carried two times for three yards and had a key lost fumble in Sunday's 34-31 overtime win against the Seahawks.

Pead was the primary backup in the game with Tre Mason (hamstring) and Todd Gurley (knee) both out, but didn't see much time and nearly contributed to a devastating loss with a fumble in his own territory. With Mason likely to return soon and Tavon Austin seeing occasional carries, Pead is unlikely to see much, if any, game time in the future.

Pead gained 52 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries in a 24-17 preseason loss to Philadelphia on Thursday.

Pead may have solidified his roster spot with a stellar showing Thursday after nobody could run the ball in the team's previous game. With Tre Mason (hamstring) and Todd Gurley (knee) both ailing, Pead may actually see a carry or two in the season opener, especially if Mason does not play.

Pead tallied 18 yards on six rushes in Saturday's 24-14 preseason defeat at the hands of the Colts.

Pead may get himself a roster spot due to Todd Gurley being out for a little while still, but he is buried on the depth chart. He did have the longest run of the game Saturday at 13 yards, but only gained 5 yards on the other five rushes.

Pead may be the odd running back out come cutdown time in August with the drafting of Todd Gurley, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Pead missed last season with a knee injury and has had off-the-field issues in the past, so a completion between him and Trey Watts will likely end with Watts on the squad. Pead will have to really impress in the offseason and through training camp to get an opportunity to remain with the Rams.

After clearing waivers Thursday, Pead was placed on IR by the Rams, foxsports.com reports.

It's a predictable outcome for Pead after the 2012 second-rounder tore his ACL during Saturday's preseason contest against the Packers. Assuming no issues in his recovery, Pead will presumably have a shot to make a push for a spot in the team's backfield mix next year.

Thomas suggested Pead's injury occurred around the knee area, which isn't a great sign. Pead suffered the injury on a 33-yard kick return.

Pead missed some of practice earlier in the week, and his hand appears to still be bothering him. He is currently listed as the No. 3 running back, but will have to fend off Chase Reynolds and Tre Mason.

Pead is listed third on St. Louis' depth chart to start the preseason, the Rams' official site reports.

It isn't known when Pead was injured, but this certainly won't help his chances of moving up the depth chart that he slid down last season. He will likely begin the season as fourth in line at running back.

He ended up excelling in that role over the final seven games, giving him a strong shot at this year's final roster. The Rams return Zac Stacy and Benny Cunningham, and used a top-75 pick on Tre Mason. At the Combine, GM Les Snead indicated he envisions Pead as mostly a special teamer. Pead's roster chances are around 50:50 entering training camp. It's likely St. Louis was the initiator of trade talks, not the other way around. Through three NFL seasons, Pead has 17 carries for 75 yards (4.4 YPC).
