Mon Jul 23 201818:16Padres shuffle rotation, start Lucchesi in opener vs Mets
NEW YORK (AP) — The San Diego Padres shuffled their rotation and were set to start Joey Lucchesi in the series opener at the New York Mets.Eric Lauer was pushed back a day and will start Tuesday. Clayton Richard, the third straight left-hander, starts Wednesday's series finale.Padres manager Andy Green said his plan always had been to start Lucchesi and attributed the mix-up to miscommunication with the club's public relations department.San Diego placed right-hander Colten Brewer on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left oblique and recalled Lucchesi from Triple-A El Paso. Green said Brewer got hurt on the pitch that induced Rhys Hoskins to line out leading off the ninth inning of Sunday's doubleheader opener at Philadelphia. Brewer struck out the next two batters, finishing the game."Yesterday was a little bit sore. Came in today was a lot bit sore," Green said. "We're thinking it might be an oblique, and as soon as you hear that word you expect considerable time. So hoping it's not that severe, but it was one of things where out training staff didn't think he was going to pitch in the next couple weeks."Right-hander Kazuhisa Makita, the 26th player in Sunday's doubleheader split at Philadelphia, was returned to Triple-A El Paso.___More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball

Mon May 7 201821:47Padres move Mitchell to bullpen, option Makita to Triple-A
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres moved struggling right-hander Bryan Mitchell to the bullpen Monday and optioned reliever Kazuhisa Makita to Triple-A El Paso.San Diego also reinstated reliever Matt Strahm from the 10-day disabled list before its game against Washington.Mitchell is 0-3 with a 6.47 ERA in seven starts this year. He has walked 26 and struck out 16 in 32 innings. The 27-year-old Mitchell lasted only 2 1/3 innings Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Monterrey, Mexico, in his shortest start of the season.Jordan Lyles is scheduled to start in Mitchell's spot Thursday against St. Louis. The Padres liked Mitchell so much that when they acquired him from the New York Yankees in December, they were willing to take on third baseman Chase Headley and his $13 million salary. But he has struggled from the start."The biggest one to me is the walks. It's hard to pitch in this league walking batters at the level he was for us," manager Andy Green said. "That walk rate hasn't been... [More]
