Romero is close to signing with the Giants, Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun reports.
Now 30 years old, Romero hasn't put together a decent stretch in the majors since 2011, when he posted a 2.92 ERA over 225 innings for the Blue Jays. He fell off hard in 2012, and then struggled at the Triple-A level in both 2013 and 2014. He's unlikely to make an impact at the big-league level in any organization.

Romero was released by the Blue Jays on Saturday, SportsNet's Shi Davidi reports.
Romero had his time as a fantasy baseball commodity back in 2010 and 2011, but has either been injured or ineffective since then. It seems unlikely that he will ever be heard from again at the highest level.

Wed Mar 19 201409:20Blue Jays ship Ricky Romero to the minors
Blue Jays reassigned LHP Ricky Romero to minor league camp.
Romero's fate was sealed when he was pummeled on Tuesday by the Tigers, walking five and allowing three runs in 2 2/3 innings. He didn't strike out a batter, plunked one and threw a pair of wild pitches. The former ace of the Jays' staff posted a hide-the-women-and-children 5.97 ERA and 1.71 WHIP over 188 1/3 innings the last two seasons.

Tue Mar 18 201417:19Ricky Romero walks five in poor outing
Ricky Romero had a setback Tuesday versus the Tigers, walking five and allowing three runs in 2 2/3 innings.
Romero's comeback bid hit a high note six days ago, when he pitched four strong innings against the Rays. Today,. he couldn't manage a single strikeout and he had a hit batter and two wild pitches to go along with all of the walks. He's now seemingly certain to open the season back in the minors.

Wed Mar 12 201416:22Ricky Romero solid for four innings
Ricky Romero pitched four innings and allowed just one run in relief Wednesday against the Rays.
Romero was sitting in the low-90s in the game, too, so it looks like he's turning into a legitimate candidate to make the Blue Jays. At this point, he's probably worth a flier as a reserve pick in AL-only leagues. Even if he doesn't make the team initially, it's still pretty great that he's come this far.

Fri Mar 7 201416:03Ricky Romero srikes out three Rays
Ricky Romero pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three, against the Rays on Friday.
That's pretty encouraging. Romero hasn't gotten any traction as a rotation candidate even with J.A. Happ putting his spot up for grabs, but maybe it shouldn't be completely ruled out just yet. He allowed one hit and walked one today.

Sat Mar 1 201417:14Ricky Romero throws scoreless inning
Despite walking two, Ricky Romero managed to pitch a scoreless inning against the Orioles on Saturday.
The Blue Jays have no expectations for Romero this spring, but if he happens to show his old form, they'll certainly make room for him in their rotation. Most likely, though, the Romero of old isn't coming back.

Sun Feb 2 201419:21Ricky Romero a long shot to make Blue Jays
Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com believes that Ricky Romero is a long shot to make the Blue Jays out of spring training.
The former ace of the Jays staff, the 29-year-old southpaw has posted a horrifying 5.97 ERA and 1.71 WHIP over 188 1/3 innings the last two seasons. It looks as if he'll begin the season back at Triple-A Buffalo where he'll have to show a return to form before he rejoins Toronto's rotation. He can safely be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Thu Sep 5 201310:59Romero to be cut from 40-man this winter
Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Thursday morning that Ricky Romero will likely be removed from the 40-man roster again this offseason.
Romero was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, but he hasn't been used yet and will probably only see mop-up appearances down the stretch. "Very good chance he comes off of the roster in the offseason," Anthopoulos told 590 The Fan in Toronto. "I told him that ahead of time, just for the 40-man spot. He'll come in next spring, he'll come in and compete and hopefully he'll start fresh and he can get it turned around."

Blue Jays purchased the contract of LHP Ricky Romero from Triple-A Buffalo.
Romero has been terrible in his time in the majors this season and hasn't been much better at Triple-A, holding a 5.78 ERA over 22 starts. He'll be used in long relief for now, but it's possible the Jays will give him a start or two this month.

Wed Aug 28 201310:31Romero struggles in Triple-A start
Ricky Romero gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits and six walks over 6 1/3 innings with Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.
Romero now has a 5.88 ERA and 80/62 K/BB ratio in 108 2/3 innings over 21 starts in Triple-A this season. The Blue Jays want to see more consistency, so he's far from a lock to be a September call-up.

Wed Jul 3 201309:35Romero could return to majors before Sept.
Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos hasn't ruled out the possibility that Ricky Romero could return to the majors before September.
Romero still owns a brutal 6.89 ERA through 10 starts at Triple-A to go along with a 27/34 K/BB ratio in 47 innings, but he has a 3.45 ERA over his last five starts. Still, Anthopoulos wants to see more consistency before bringing him back to the majors. "From a consistency standpoint, you want to see him have the results he needs to have at that level, start after start," said Anthopoulos. "So I want to see him do it for awhile." Could he be back before September callups? "Sure, if he's performs well and he's doing great and we have a need up here."

The Jays have to either send him to the bullpen or back to extended spring training at this point.
