News of Wayne's release first came as a surprise, given that he agreed to a contract with a $450,000 signing bonus on Aug. 24. It now seems the parting of ways may have been his idea, in which case he'll return most of the bonus. It may be that Wayne just doesn't think he's up to the task of playing another season, but no specific reason for his departure has been provided. It'll be surprising if he plays in the NFL again, as this was seemingly his final effort at obtaining a second ring.

The transaction hasn't officially been announced, but with Wayne not at Saturday's practice, it's pretty clear that he's being released. The contract he recently signed includes $500,000 in guaranteed money, yet the Patriots seemingly reached the same conclusion as the Colts: Wayne has nothing left to offer. This might taken as a good sign for Brandon LaFell's (foot) Week 1 availability, but in reality, it's probably not related.

Wayne caught two passes (10 targets) for 24 yards in Thursday's preseason game against the Giants.

Having just signed with the Patriots last week, Wayne got an unusual amount of work for the final preseason game. Even though he was catching passes from Ryan Lindley, Thursday's showing probably didn't help Wayne's bid to have a significant role in the Week 1 offense. It remains to be seen how involved the 36-year-old will be.

Wayne made his debut for the Patriots in Friday's preseason game at Carolina. He dropped his lone target.

Wayne played early in the game with Tom Brady, and appeared out of sync with the veteran QB on his only target, as the pass arrived earlier than Wayne expected. Once Wayne is up to speed (he just signed with New England on Monday), he should be a valuable member of the team's wideout corps, although it remains to be seen how much fantasy value he'll hold.

Wayne's contract with the Patriots includes nearly $500,000 in guaranteed money up front, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

The contract suggests that Wayne is a lock for the final roster and is expected to stick around for the entire season. Still, his role will probably depend on the health of New England's other wide receivers, particularly Julian Edelman (undisclosed), Brandon LaFell (foot) and Danny Amendola.

The Texans are not believed to be interested in signing Wayne, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Previous reports suggested that the Texans were one of the teams interested in the veteran receiver, but evidently Wayne is not viewed by Houston as a potential replacement for long-time starter Andre Johnson. For now, veterans Nate Washington and Cecil Shorts -- along with draftees Jaelen Strong and Keith Mumphery -- are in line to compete for slotting behind the team's top wideout option DeAndre Hopkins. With the Texans not thought to be in the mix to sign Wayne, the report suggests that the Ravens, Patriots and Packers could have interest in the 36-year-old pass-catcher, who recorded 64 catches for 779 yards, while catching two TD passes in 15 games for the Colts last season.

Wayne (triceps) said he had several teams call him about his services and intends to play this season, ESPN reports. "It's weird cause this is one of my best years as far as being in the best shape that I've been in a while," Wayne said. "It's coming along great."

Wayne did not participate in Friday's practice, but the Colts merely wanted to get him some rest. Having logged a full practice Thursday, Wayne should be fine for Sunday's game.

Wayne has expressed confidence that he will be at full strength this weekend against the Bengals, a notion supported by his full practice participation Thursday. Barring any setbacks, look for the veteran wideout to draw a probable designation in advance of Sunday's playoff contest.

Wayne (groin), who was spotted at practice Wednesday, is confident that he will be good to go Sunday against the Bengals, Kevin Bowen of the Colts' official site reports.

"I'll be ready to play," Wayne noted of his availability for the Colts' playoff opener on his weekly radio show on Tuesday night. "That's the main thing. I'll be at 100 percent." We'll continue to track Wayne's status as the week rolls along, but at this stage, it looks like the veteran wideout will be out there for Sunday's 1:05 ET contest, in the absence of any setbacks in practice.

Coach Chuck Pagano indicated Monday that Wayne (groin) should be able to practice this week, Kevin Bowen of the Colts' website reports.

It remains to be seen if Wayne -- who felt a "twinge" in his groin at the tail end of an 80-yard passing play on Sunday -- practices Wednesday or Thursday, or both days, but for his part, the veteran wideout indicated that the injury won't affect his playing status for this weekend's Wild Card round.

Wayne suffered a groin injury Sunday against the Titans, the Associated Press reports.

Prior to his exit from Sunday's game, Wayne caught two passes for 91 yards, with his injury occurring at the tail end of an 80-yard passing play.

Wayne is slated to have have surgery on his partially torn left triceps after the 2014 season, the Indianapolis Star reports.

Wayne, who is slated to become a free agent this offseason, will reportedly consider retirement at that time, but for now, he'll continue to work through his triceps issue. In the short term though, with the Colts not having much to play for this week, Wayne would seem to be a candidate to be rested or see limited action Sunday against the Titans.
