Sat Feb 819:12Rays Invite Tres Barrera, Connor Seabold To Spring TrainingTres BarreraCNationalsFree Agent
According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, the Tampa Bay Rays are inviting catcher Tres Barrera and right-handed pitcher Connor Seabold to spring training as non-roster players. Barrera spent time with the Nationals and Cardinals. Across 57 MLB contests, the backstop posted a .228/.313/.310 slash line with two home runs. In 169 contests at Triple-A, the Texas product posted a .222/.315/.351 line with 19 doubles and 15 long balls. Seabold has spent time with the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies. Through 108 2/3 MLB frames, the right-hander has held an 8.12 ERA with a 1.77 WHIP. However, across 172 innings at Triple-A, the 29-year-old has held a 4.13 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP. Fantasy managers should expect both players to open the season with Triple-A Durham.

Sat Feb 818:53Dylan Coleman Signs Minor-League Contract With BaltimoreDylan ColemanSPRoyalsFree Agent
According to Ari Alexander of KPRC2, the Baltimore Orioles have signed right-handed pitcher Dylan Coleman to a minor-league contract. Coleman logged just one inning in the majors last season. He logged a career-high 68 frames during the 2022 season and posted a solid 2.78 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP. Coleman spent most of his 2024 campaign at Triple-A Sugar Land, where he held a 6.50 ERA with a 1.94 WHIP across 36 innings of relief. The 28-year-old tallied one save and struck out 42 batters. However, he struggled to command his pitches as he allowed a hefty 42 free passes. Given his struggles at Triple-A, fantasy managers should expect Coleman to spend most of the 2025 campaign in the minor leagues and not carry any fantasy value.

Sat Feb 813:46Giancarlo Stanton Will Not Play Every DayGiancarlo StantonDH/OFYankeesFree Agent
According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, New York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton will be given maintenance days throughout the season to ensure he is healthy for the stretch run. General manager Brian Cashman noted that Stanton would not play every day "because he'll get hurt." Stanton has played less than 130 games in each of his previous three seasons due to numerous injuries. Last summer, the slugger logged 114 contests with a .233/.298/.475 line. He launched 27 long balls and tallied 72 RBI. He hit at least 30 home runs in two of his past four seasons and at least 25 in three. However, given his risk for injury, the Yankees will emphasize keeping the 35-year-old healthy for the postseason. During the playoffs, Stanton has been known to take his game to another level as he posted an impressive .273/.339/.709 line with seven home runs in 14 playoff games last season. Fantasy managers should expect Stanton to continue to carry 25+ HR upside but could see his RBI count decrease if he loses plate appearances. Aaron Judge will likely shift to the DH spot when Stanton is given the day off.

Sat Feb 808:17Anthony Rendon Likely Entering Camp In Reserve RoleAnthony Rendon3BAngelsFree Agent
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon is expected to open camp as the team's No. 2 third baseman. Earlier this week, the Angles signed third baseman Yoan Moncada to a one-year deal, and he is expected to open spring training as the team's top option. Rendon has battled numerous injuries over the past four seasons. During this stretch, Rendon has never appeared in 60 or more games. Last summer, Rendon appeared in just 57 contests and held a poor .218/.307/.267 slash line. He hit 10 doubles and did not tally a long ball. However, he did show a solid eye at the plate, holding a 9.7 percent walk rate and a 14.7 percent strikeout rate. Fantasy managers should monitor his status during spring training but should not target him in any formats, as he will likely face an uphill battle to earn playing time in 2025.

Sat Feb 808:08Yoan Moncada Expected To Start In Los AngelesYoán Moncada3BWhite SoxFree Agent
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Yoan Moncada is expected to start at the hot corner for the Los Angeles Angels. The veteran third baseman signed a one-year deal with the Angels earlier this week and is expected to open camp as the team's starting third baseman. Anthony Rendon has been viewed as the starting third baseman in Los Angeles but has struggled to remain healthy. Moncada has also battled injuries over the past two seasons but has performed well when on the field. Last season, across 12 contests, the switch-hitter held a .275/.356/.400 slash line. During the 2023 season, Moncada held a similar .260/.305/.425 line across 92 games. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor Moncada's status during spring training as he could be a viable corner infielder in deeper formats, given his solid batting average upside.

Sat Feb 807:58Padres Sign Jason HeywardJason HeywardRFCubsFree Agent
According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the San Diego Padres have signed outfielder Jason Heyward to a contract. Lin noted that Heyward is expected to share time in left field with Connor Joe who the team acquired earlier on Friday evening. Heyward opened the season with the Los Angeles Dodgers but eventually ended his campaign in Houston. Across 87 contests, the veteran posted a .211/.288/.412 slash line with 12 doubles, 10 home runs, and five stolen bases. In 2023, Heyward held a solid .269/.340/.473 slash line with 23 doubles and 15 home runs across 124 contests with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Given his strong defensive metrics, fantasy managers should expect Heyward to be given several opportunities in left field, likely in a platoon role with Connor Joe. However, given his declining bat, he should only be targeted in deeper NL-only formats.

Fri Feb 720:56Connor Wong Adds Muscle This OffseasonConnor WongCRed SoxFree Agent
The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey writes that Boston Red Sox Connor Wong looked noticeably stronger at Fenway Fest after he spent the offseason "eating a lot" in order to make himself more durable. Wong hit .327 with an .857 OPS through the end of June last season but tailed off offensively in the second half, both offensively and defensively. The 28-year-old backstop is hoping to take a step forward in his fifth MLB campaign in 2025 and will be working with new catching instructor Park Guinn, in addition to Red Sox legend Jason Varitek. Wong broke out to the tune of a .280/.333/.425 slash line and career-highs in home runs (13) and RBI (52) while adding eight steals in 126 games. The majority of his production was buoyed by a strong BABIP that won't be sustainable in 2025, so fantasy managers shouldn't consider him anything more than a low-end No. 2 catcher.

Fri Feb 720:42Jhonathan Diaz Becomes A Free AgentJhonathan DíazSPAngelsFree Agent
Seattle Mariners left-hander Jhonathan Diaz cleared waivers on Friday and elected to become a free agent. In another move, outfielder Cade Marlowe cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma. Diaz was designated for assignment recently by Seattle to make room on the 40-man roster for pitcher Casey Legumina. The 28-year-old Venezuelan southpaw is now free to sign with any major-league team. In his first year with the Mariners in 2024, Diaz appeared in only five games (one start) at the big-league level and allowed six runs (five earned) on 14 hits (two home runs) while walking three and striking out eight in 9 2/3 innings. His first three years in the majors came with the Los Angeles Angels, where he went a combined 2-1 with a 4.84 ERA and 1.73 WHIP with 24 K's and 24 walks. Diaz will be left-handed relief depth if he latches on with another organization.

Fri Feb 719:02Connor Joe Inks Deal With San DiegoConnor Joe1B/LFRockiesFree Agent
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the San Diego Padres have signed outfielder/first baseman Connor Joe to a contract. Earlier in the offseason, the Pittsburgh Pirates non-tendered the 32-year-old. Joe has spent the previous two seasons in the Steel City. During this stint, Joe held a .238/.330/.396 slash line with 53 doubles, 20 home runs, and five stone bases. He showed a strong eye at the plate with a 10.6 percent walk rate, which placed him in the 78th percentile among qualified hitters. He was also graded as an excellent defender, placing him in the 84th percentile in arm strength. However, he struggled to generate hard contact at the plate, generating a weak 4.7 percent barrel rate and a 32.7 percent hard-hit rate. Fantasy managers should expect Joe to operate as a rotational piece in the lineup, seeing time in the outfield and at first base.

Fri Feb 718:24Orioles Designate Daz Cameron For AssignmentDaz CameronRFTigersFree Agent
According to the team, the Baltimore Orioles have designated outfielder Daz Cameron for assignment. This transaction opened a roster spot for Roansy Contreras, who the team claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees earlier on Friday. Last season, Cameron logged 66 contests with the Oakland Athletics. During this stint, the 28-year-old posted a .200/.258/.329 line with five doubles, five home runs, and five stolen bases. Across 139 career games at the MLB level, Cameron has held a similar .201/.263/.330 line. Through 423 career games at Triple-A, the outfielder has posted a .250/.339/.427 slash line. Fantasy managers should expect Cameron to spend most of the 2025 season at the Triple-A level, given his lack of success in the major leagues.

Fri Feb 717:29Orioles Claim Roansy Contreras Off Waivers From YankeesRoansy ContrerasSPPiratesFree Agent
Right-hander Roansy Contreras is on the move again after the Baltimore Orioles announced on Friday that they claimed him off waivers from the New York Yankees. Contreras has now been claimed on waivers five times this offseason, with this being the second time Baltimore has scooped him up. In corresponding moves, the O's designated outfielder Daz Cameron for assignment and outrighted infielder Luis Vazquez to Triple-A Norfolk. If the 25-year-old Contreras doesn't make the Orioles' big-league roster out of spring training, he'll have to be exposed to waivers yet again since he's out of minor-league options. The Dominican hurler was once a top-100 prospect with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a starter, but he has since transitioned to a relief role and posted a 4.35 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and two saves with the Pirates and Angels in 2024 in 68 1/3 total innings.

Fri Feb 717:19Jeurys Familia Looking To Make MLB ComebackJeurys FamiliaRPMetsFree Agent
MLB.com's Francys Romero reports that free-agent right-hander Jeurys Familia is working out with the intention of making a comeback to MLB. The 12-year-old Dominican veteran is currently training under Puerto Rican Hector Berrios, who also works with Boston Red Sox left-handed reliever Aroldis Chapman. Familia, who will turn 36 years of age this October, didn't pitch in the big leagues in 2024 and was released by the Oakland Athletics in May of 2023 after he had a 6.39 ERA and 2.05 WHIP in 12 2/3 relief innings. He made his major-league debut all the way back in 2012 with the New York Mets and does have 127 career saves and an All-Star appearance (2016), but he'll be a long shot to make an impact on a big-league roster again. Familia gave up six runs with 11 K's and five walks in 17 1/3 innings in Mexico and the Dominican last year.

Fri Feb 717:02White Sox Sign Brandon Drury, Tristan GrayBrandon Drury2B/3B/PHMetsFree Agent
Tristan Gray2BRaysFree Agent
The Chicago White Sox announced on Friday that they agreed to terms with free-agent infielders Brandon Drury and Tristan Gray on minor-league deals that include non-roster invites to spring training. Drury fell apart in his second year with the Angels in 2024 to the tune of a .169/.242/.228 lash line with four homers, 15 RBI and 81 strikeouts in 360 plate appearances over 97 games. The ChiSox will be hoping the 32-year-old veteran can turn it around, and he should have a clear path to a big-league roster spot, but fantasy managers in mixed leagues should be ignoring him. Gray, 28, is probably more of a long shot for the Opening Day roster without as much big-league experience as Drury. The left-handed hitter has hit just .152/.222/.273 with a homer and RBI in 17 major-league games with the Rays, Marlins and A's after debuting in 2023.

Fri Feb 716:08Trey Mancini, Diamondbacks Agree To Minor-League DealTrey Mancini1B/DHOriolesFree Agent
Veteran first baseman/outfielder Trey Mancini and the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a minor-league deal on Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, a source told ESPN's Jeff Passan. The 32-year-old right-handed slugger didn't play at all in 2024 but has remained in shape and will now get his chance to resurface in the big leagues. Mancini last played in 2023 for the Chicago Cubs, slashing .234/.299/.336 with a career-low .635 OPS, four home runs and 28 RBI in only 79 games. He had a .276/.335/.485 slash line with an .819 OPS and 86 homers in his first four years with Baltimore before a cancer diagnosis that caused him to miss all of 2020. Since then, he's slashed .245/.318/.398 with a .717 OPS and 43 homers in three seasons with Baltimore, Houston and the Cubs. If Mancini makes the big-league roster, it will likely be as a bench bat for the Snakes.

Fri Feb 715:42Cardinals Sign Nick Anderson To Minor-League DealNick AndersonRPRaysFree Agent
The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Friday that they signed free-agent right-hander Nick Anderson to a minor-league contract with a non-roster invite to major-league spring training. The 34-year-old veteran reliever has appeared in 165 games over five MLB seasons since debuting with the Miami Marlins in 2019. In his time in the majors, he has put up a nice 3.18 ERA with a 31.6 percent strikeout rate in 158 1/3 relief innings. Anderson pitched for the Kansas City Royals in 2024, going 3-1 with a 4.04 ERA (5.07 FIP), a 1.40 WHIP, one save, 29 strikeouts and 15 walks in 35 2/3 innings. He hasn't been a big strikeout guy since his first full season with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2020, when he struck out 44.8% of the hitters he faced. In comparison, he had a weak 19% strikeout rate for KC last year. Anderson could provide veteran relief depth for the Red Birds, but he should remain off the fantasy radar for now.

Fri Feb 714:57Nationals Agree With Colin Poche On Minor-League DealColin PocheRPRaysFree Agent
The Washington Nationals agreed on a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training with free-agent left-hander Colin Poche on Friday. Poche heads to the National League East after spending the last three years with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he went 17-7 with a 3.27 ERA (4.16 FIP), 1.13 WHIP, 10 saves, 158 strikeouts and 59 walks in 156 2/3 innings over 174 relief appearances. The 31-year-old southpaw appeared in 43 games out of the bullpen last year and sported a 3.86 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, two saves, 33 strikeouts and 13 walks in 37 1/3 frames. The veteran reliever also had 65 holds over the last three seasons and certainly has enough experience to win an Opening Day spot in Washington's bullpen, especially when considering the lack of proven options they have. Poche could be a sleeper for holds in deeper fantasy formats in D.C.

Fri Feb 714:49Blue Jays Continue To Work On Extension For Vladimir Guerrero Jr.Vladimir Guerrero Jr.1B/DHBlue JaysFree Agent
Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins acknowledged that talks with first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. remain ongoing on a potential contract extension with the start of spring training coming next week. Guerrero has reportedly set a self-imposed deadline for contract talks for the start of spring training, and it's been widely reported that he is looking for at least $100 million more than the $340 million deal the Blue Jays reportedly offered earlier this offseason. The implication is that if Toronto doesn't make progress with Guerrero soon, he will leave in free agency after the 2025 season. Contract issues aside, Vladdy Jr. is in his prime offensively and is ranked as RotoBaller's top fantasy first baseman after the four-time All-Star slashed .323/.396/.544 with a .940 OPS, 30 homers and 103 RBI in 159 games last year.

Fri Feb 714:09Sandy Alcantara Likely To Be On Innings Limit Early OnSandy AlcantaraSPMarlinsFree Agent
Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara (elbow) told the media that he will let the team handle his innings in the first two months of the 2025 season. But after that, Alcantara said, "I think they gotta let me compete." Alcantara did not pitch at all in 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, so the expectation all along is that he'd be limited from a workload perspective early on this year as Miami eased him back into the starting rotation. It's unclear exactly what the Marlins' plan for Alcantara is, but the good news for fantasy managers is that the 29-year-old is expected to be ready for Opening Day at the end of March. The two-time All-Star won the National League Cy Young in 2022, so we already know the kind of upside he possesses, but fantasy managers should temper expectations in his first season back. RotoBaller has him ranked as the No. 46 fantasy starting pitcher in 2025.

Fri Feb 714:03Luis Rengifo Wins Arbitration Case Against AngelsLuis Rengifo2B/SSAngelsFree Agent
Infielder Luis Rengifo won his salary arbitration case against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, according to a source. Rengifo will earn $5.95 million in 2025 after the Angels had filed at $5.8 million. Rengifo earned at least a super-utility role for the Halos this year after he hit .300 in his sixth season with the team, although he played in only 78 games in 2024 due to a right-wrist injury that required surgery in August. The 27-year-old's best path to playing time might come at third base with the Angels not guaranteeing regular playing time to the struggling Anthony Rendon. Rengifo's best qualities for fantasy managers are his positional versatility, his speed, and his ability to put the ball in play regularly. He had a career-best 24 stolen bases and is eligible at both second and third base in most fantasy leagues. There's an outside chance he'll see some time at shortstop with Zach Neto (shoulder) potentially missing Opening Day.

Fri Feb 711:28Jarren Duran Expected To See More Time In Left FieldJarren DuranCF/RFRed SoxFree Agent
The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey writes that Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran is expected to see more playing time in left field in 2025 with Ceddanne Rafaela in center field. Rafaela was forced to move to shortstop last year out of necessity when Trevor Story suffered a season-ending shoulder injury early in the season. With Story returning in 2025, Rafaela should spend more time in center field, which will push Duran to left. From a fantasy perspective, it won't change Duran's outlook much, although it could make him a little more attractive in leagues with specific left, center and right field starting lineup spots. Even if the 28-year-old takes a small step back in production in 2025, he'll be one of the better leadoff hitters in baseball. Duran continued to improve his strikeout and walk rates a year ago and also had a career-high barrel rate. He is RotoBaller's No. 10 fantasy outfielder.
